L4D Crash Course released on Live

Update: 800 MSP price is wrong.

Left 4 Dead add-on Crash Course has been released on Steam and Xbox Live Marketplace, as Valve said it would be.

Valve didn't tell us the Xbox 360 version would cost 800 MS Points (£6.80/€9.60), however - 560 MSP (£4.76 / €6.72) was the previously announced price. It's not clear whether this is intended or simply an error. Tom's downloading the add-on for Xbox 360 now.

Update: Xbox Live's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has Tweeted that the higher price-point is an error, and the content should cost 560 MSP. He suggests holding off until Xbox Live admins rectify the mistake.

PC owners needn't pay anything for Crash Course from Steam, although the DLC doesn't appear to be available just yet.

Crash Course bridges the gap between the No Mercy and Death Toll campaigns in the original game, and has been designed for shorter, 30-minute Versus mode games, as matches using the existing campaigns can take around two hours to complete.

    DLC is a joke.

Bobby Kotick has already said it - a $50 game is now potentially a $500 game, what with all the peripherals, avatar clothing, game content and other shit they sell us.

This isn't even a whole new campaign - In fact, it's only 2 maps, so it's less than half the size of the other four campaigns, which each include 5 maps.
  • viper_h #6 2 years ago

    Wow... 800.. Haha.

  • localnotail #7 2 years ago

I just noticed it was 800 points as I was downloading it. It's still only the price of a round of pints for someone with only a few mates. Or a large pizza.
  • Monkey_Puncher #8 2 years ago

It'll be an error, bet they update it later.
  • penhalion #9 2 years ago

I'm not even vaguely convinced that Microsoft has much to do with this. The likes of infinity ward and activision release free levels and maps all the time with no issues. It's therefore highly unlikely that Microsoft forced Valve to charge for this add on in any way shape or form.

I'll hold off until the price is confirmed. There have been pricing mistakes in the past on Live. They can shove it for 800.
  • Demikaze #12 2 years ago

800 points is a wee bit pricey though, ja? Especially when another price all together was stated earlier.

edit: obviously, it could just be an error. Has happened on more than a few occasions.

Price of a curry, but still...thanks for the heads up MS. :(
  • DrRobotnik #14 2 years ago

    @localnotail

It's not about the fact that it's only a 'round of pints', it's that comparative to the price of a full game it's a lot of money for two new maps, especially when they're giving it away for free on PC.

  • penhalion #15 2 years ago

And how the frak is the FREE pc version nowhere in sight!

No, it's not. Hence the blackballing.
  • Demikaze #19 2 years ago

@Penhalion - really? Where are these free maps of which you speak? I was playing COD4 and COD:WOW last night and all downloadable map packs were priced at 800 points. All of them. I can think of Bungie as releasing the odd map on very special occasions, but that's about it.
  • localnotail #20 2 years ago

@DrRobotnik - I understand that this release might get people upset on principle, but I personally simply do not mind paying for it. I love this game, I still play at least 4 games a week of it, sometimes a lot more. So I know I'll get more fun out of it than I would from spending the same money on anything else I can think of. I really don't care if it's free for PC users, good for them - I prefer to play it on my XBOX, which cost me a damn sight less than a good gaming PC would. I don't understand why people get so irate about it.
  • Hobo #21 2 years ago

"No, it's not. Hence the blackballing. "

So there aren't companies out there that release free DLC for games then? Gears Of War didn't get free maps? Call Of Duty: WAW didn't get free maps? Halo 3 doesn't have free maps? Batman: Arkham Asylum doesn't have free maps?

    Yeah thought so.
  • 4thVariety #22 2 years ago

contrary to what the article says, the Steam version is not available
  • JensonJet #23 2 years ago

I can't imagine why anybody is bothering with this. The new game is coming out pretty soon. Had this come out a few months ago, I understand.

Personally I'm going to continue with my policy of not paying for any downloads as this encourages Microsoft/games industry to move quicker towards an ultimately more expensive, download-only, gaming environment and kill off the second-hand market for good.
  • TruWari3r #24 2 years ago

    @demikaze,

it's not that it's 800 points, it's that it was supposed to be 560 points which in itself was the olive branch to xbox because the pc dlc is free.

that it's now currently 800 is a bit bollocks

sweet, i've been waiting for this for ages. Hopefully the price will have dropped by the time i get home tonight to download it though!
  • Demikaze #27 2 years ago

    @Hobo - Well... I got told.

I think it's more down to the fact that these games DO charge for most of their new maps. The odd free map is fine by Microsoft because at least they get a return on the larger packs. With L4D, we've had one large free update (survival mode) and I believe Microsoft objected to another completely free update. Kind of understandable - that's all space on their servers and no money for them.

"oh, and hobo? that free COD:WAW map is just another one of the maps that came with the game, but played in the daytime instead of night"

So irrelevant it's not even true haha

It's still map that's being hosted on XBL for free, regardless of it's content.

Feel free to counteract the free Halo 3, Gears Of War, and Batman map packs that're on Live too though?
  • Demikaze #30 2 years ago

@Hobo - there will be chargeable map packs for Batman AA coming. See my point above why it appears that Valve couldn't release another free update.
    Edited by 1 at 29/09/09 @ 11:08
  • Yossarian #31 2 years ago

    "Well... I got told."

Not really. All of the free maps he mentions either have some sort of advertising tie-in, or a rare special dispensation from Microsoft (which Valve got for the Survival Pack, remember?). All of Halo's maps, for instance, originally cost money but later became free, or in the case of Cold Storage received special dispensation (in this case for Bungie Day), but still had strings attached (you could only play it in Matchmaking playlists which also required the paid Legendary maps).

It is likely the Batman has free DLC only because it will later have paid DLC.
  • Hobo #32 2 years ago

@Hobo - there will be chargable map packs for Batman AA coming.

Again though, that's not really relevant unless Microsoft or any developers come forward and say "This is free, but you'll be making up for that with later paid-for map packs".

Until then, there's still free content on Live, yet Valve continue to spin this story about Microsoft making them charge. Don't get me wrong, i ADORE Valve, they're great, Orange Box is one of my favourite releases ever...but it's hardly the first time Valve will have spun 360 owners a load of bull...namely the big TF2 update that never happened!
  • DrRobotnik #33 2 years ago

    @Hobo

You're a cretin. Stop talking and just listen.

Microsoft only allow approximately 1 in 3 game DLC to be free. So, for example, Halo get around this by charging for their maps for 'x' period of time, then make them free, whereas others will release 2 packs at a price, and then a third for free (I don't think the order of paid for/free is important).

Left 4 Dead, as you should know, has already had a FREE DLC update, and as this will be the second pack Valve are releasing, they HAVE to charge for it.

Oh, and World at War charge 800 points for almost all their map packs. Go and look on xbox.com
  • BadBoyBonner #34 2 years ago

Why is there always someone who does a fucking retard prices comparison as if we can't dived £6.80 into every day items ourselves.

So the price of 4 Big Macs then, an they only last 3 minutes when I have em for my breakfast.

So 1000th of the price I payed for the girlfriends engagement ring which doesn't even do anything, so cracking value etc etc

Who gives a fuck what the price can be divided by.

People are pissed off as MS are very heavy handedly enforcing popular games charge for things that are free on the PC.

"It will destabilise the Live economy" well why not revalue it then because it is certainly becoming one of my deciding factors when choosing to update next gen, when added with the annual live fee's.
  • stepneg #35 2 years ago

What about Burnout paradise, Gears and Rainbow Six Vegas, all have had free content, doesn't add up to me and at 560 I was tempted but for 800 no thanks, I'll wait for L4D2.
  • the_dudefather #36 2 years ago

I guess the real issue is why is it a higher price, it's not much, but is it a mistake?
  • Hobo #37 2 years ago

Aaaw! How wonderful of you to get personal!

"Left 4 Dead, as you should know, has already had a FREE DLC update, and as this will be the second pack Valve are releasing, they HAVE to charge for it."

ha, so you're told! You think my examples are the ONLY free in-game content on XBL? Get a grip.

"Oh, and World at War charge 800 points for almost all their map packs. Go and look on xbox.com "

Yeah. Having purchased them, i'm aware of this? It's the free one i'm drawing attention to.
  • Yossarian #38 2 years ago

Burnout Paradise got free content because it was associated with a major title update. Note that Left 4 Dead also received free content (the Survival Pack)... because it was associated with a major title update.

  • Jay-ITFC #46 2 years ago

For the sake of 240 points difference I'd much rather have a quality arcade game like Splosion Man or Monkey Island than a small add-on to an existing retail game. The fact that it's 2 maps rather than a full 5 map campaign puts me off.

Still buying this. The new achievements looks great too. Love to play shorter versus games.
  • penhalion #48 2 years ago

    @Yossarian

Er you may want to get your facts right. Burnout Paradise got about 3 or 4 free updates because they (Criterion) had said from day one that they were not going to charge for the packs. Some were minor and two were major. EG has a tonne of articles about the paradise content.

Basically, unless Microsoft have two totally conflicting rules about the same content, then they aren't forcing anyone to charge for it. I suspect that it comes down to Microsoft charging the software house for the storage of the content and then the software house is passing that cost on to the players plus a bit extra.
  • Hobo #49 2 years ago

The thing that i like most about this is that NOTHING of the level has been shown, so when i fire it up it's all going to be new. Good times!
  • Yossarian #50 2 years ago

Look, we're in agreement: these things should be free if developers want them to be free. But you're ignoring the realities of how free DLC is argued for and won (or lost). There is an economy on XBLM that Microsoft wants to impose some level of consistency on, but is sometimes willing to bend for first party developers (note that Halo's "buy now or get free later" model disappeared overnight when they split from MS), or in special circumstances.

In this instance, Valve were told "you've had your lot" with the Survival Pack. They did manage to argue it down to a weird figure not seen before for DLC. Now, we are not privy to what goes on behind the scenes in XBLM pricing meetings, but there is no reason to think Valve wants to charge 360 owners, and many reasons, including direct quotes from Valve employees, to suggest that they really, really don't want to charge 360 owners.
  • hiddenranbir #51 2 years ago

So hang on, Valve couldn't get it on Steam, their own platform, before MS untapped it for Live?!

If Valve really wanted to allow gamers to have this extra chapter for free, why didn't they stick it on magazine discs?

OK, it wouldn't be entirely free, but it would effectively be for the people who buy the magazines regardless, and they may well end up passing on the disc to friends.

The fact is Valve, like every other developer in the industry, want to make as much money as they possibly can and console owners are treated as with a little more contempt than PC owners. Using Microsoft as an excuse for charging is downright insulting to gamers. I will only buy their games second-hand to ensure they never make money from me, as a little token of my appreciation of their dishonesty!
  • stepneg #55 2 years ago

"ok. who's marking Hobo's comments at + figures? I've got to keep upping the threshold to block his BS out and its removing legitimate comments :-("

Maybe quite a few people agree with him, I still don't see why this couldn't have been free, other games have free content yet Valve who insist they didn't want to charge are charging, I don't see what MS has to do with it. Unless MS comes out and says we are making Valve charge for this map pack and they are making nothing out of it I won't believe it.

    @penhalion,

Actually the Burnout Paradise update that added the bikes and extra island to the game wasn't free - it costs 1000MS points. I downloaded it the other day.

EDIT: And not only that, it isn't included in the so-called "Ultimate Box", which is a bit misleading really.

EDIT2: Actually the bikes were free. It was Big Surf Island that cost 1000MS Points.

  • darkmorgado #60 2 years ago

    @Hobo,

Ah, I was under the impression it came out a week or two before. Still seems odd that they would release an "ultimate edition" knowing full well that they would be releasing substantial new content. Not really "ultimate" if it doesn't include all the DLC is it?
  • CourseOfAction #61 2 years ago

It's been corrected to 560 MS points now :D

EDIT: nvm yet. I saw it for 560 on xbox.com, but at the confirmation screen it's still 800 points.

  • kangarootoo #62 2 years ago

    @penhalion

What you overlook is that whilst MS may not force publishers to charge for their content, they almost certainly charge the publishers themselves to host and deliver the content.

Some publishers will be willing or able to absorb that cost themselves, others will not. Valve are pretty flush though, so it would be a shame if they decided to pass on the cost instead of covering it themselves (though they are abusiness, so who can say).
  • muscleblade #63 2 years ago

Love the fact that its a 2 map campaign instead of the usual five that could take hours to get through. I hope that the sequel has more campaigns with less maps. This new camopaign could help make achievements like "nothing special" easier to obtain.
    Hope so.
  • skillian #64 2 years ago

No-one really knows if MS force publishers to charge for DLC (and God forbid any games journalists try and find out) so it's a bit of a pointless argument.

Having said that, with Valve having strongly implied it many times and MS never denying it (as far as I know), I know which theory I tend to believe.
  • charming_fox #65 2 years ago

  • Fleisch #67 2 years ago

surely it shouldn't take this long to sort out? comically, they have altered the face price from 560MSP to 800MSP thus matching the download price, obviously an untrained monkey is using their genitalia to adjust the price...whilst being hit on the head with a rusty iron hammer.
  • spookyzombie #68 2 years ago

So the main screen says 800MS points still. Go into L4D in the all downloads section and it says Crash Course is 560MS points. Go into that screen to the download confirmation bit and the price is then at 800MS points again. They're trying to trick me with their witchcraft.

It's not that they couldn't it's that they didn't: MS update the store in each of their regions during the morning in that region, Valve tend to update Steam about 6 pm their time which is PST which is... oh... let's see, the next day over here. They've always done this to my knowledge and it always leads to hordes of pee'd off Europeans ravaging their forums demanding their updates (it would be a good idea if Valve stressed that the game would be released at a given time but so far they don't seem to feel the need).

It's 2:30 pm, IST/BST my time, and according to the Steam site "Official Steam time: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 - 6:30 am". Try tomorrow lads.

That really is pretty narrow minded from Valve. Don't they realise they have a global market? PST is about as far behind the rest of the world as you can get. 1800 on the 29th of September PST essentially means the 30th of Sepetember for the entire rest of the fucking world!

Poor form. D-, must try harder.

Oh believe me, I agree 100%, I wouldn't mind at all if they explained it better but they don't. They consistently release their updates the next day everywhere outside of North and South America and yet they still announce updates based on "Official Steam Time" (last I check OST was not a time zone option on my PC).

You'd imagine that dispelling the general notion that they're incompetent and consistently miss their deadlines would be enough incentive for them to clarify the release dates, but apparently not.

Edit: It's already the 30th in Oceania and east Asia so the "Where's Crash Course?" threads are filling the front page.

That this is free on PC and not the Xbox doesn't really surprise me.

Gabe Newell has always been pretty vocal about the PC being his prefered platform and I get the feeling he seems a bit resentfull at having to put his titles on a console at all. He soon dropped the PS3 with much contempt, and the after sales support of the titles on the 360 hasn't exactly been stellar. TF2 being a case in point. Whilst the PC version has recieved numerous updates and has grown from strength to strength, the console versions were dumped in the canal like a sack full of unwanted puppies.

Of course PC is his preferred platform. His company owns the #1 digital distribution system on it.

I'm sure there's no resentment, just pure business sense. You might as well say all the console focussed developers 'resent' the PC and that's why the games come out later on it. It's just not their main line of business.
  • PlugMonkey #80 2 years ago

It's bobbins, isn't it? Wii VC is even worse. Games are often 1200 points and you have to buy 2000 - practically doubling the price! I don't see what's wrong with good old fashioned cashmoney like on PS3 and Steam.
  • charming_fox #81 2 years ago

@Hobo "he seems a bit resentfull at having to put his titles on a console at all"

I'm not sure I follow your logic, why would anyone resent making games avaialble on a games console that was invented purely for playing games on?
  • muscleblade #82 2 years ago

"So the price got reduced, who the balls cares, you STILL have to buy 800 points. "

Learn the facts before you post bullshit. You actually dont have an option to buy 800 points from the marketplace. I had 60 points left so i bought 500. Now im back to 0 points on my account. No problemo.

"Of course PC is his preferred platform. His company owns the #1 digital distribution system on it.

OK perhaps resentment was too strong a word, but like you say the console versions are just business to Valve, the bare minumum of effort is being extended to it's console customers in comparison to its PC base. This latest DLC obviously costs Valve something to produce and to host, even on their own Steam service, and yet PC owners get it free whilst 360 owners pay. To me personally, that makes me feel like Valve are treating their console customers like second class citizens and are milking them for all the cash they can get. This DLC isn't the only example from Valve, as I've already pointed out, the differnce in support between the console versions of TF2 is like night and day.

I'm sure PC gamers (of which I am also one I might add), will say that's the sort of treatment they have been receiving for many years now anyway with shoddy console ports. However I can't remember a single incident where by something that's been free on the consoles has been chargable on PC.

Don't get me wrong I think Valve are a fantastic company, the Half Life games are probably my most favourite games of all time. However I'm not so blinkered and overawed by them, that I'm going to brown tongue them even when I think they're acting wrongly.

Evil, evil Valve - charging for DLC. They really are the satan of on-line gaming development.

Not only do THEY make us pay for DLC, but THEY force us to buy Live Gold subscriptions in order to use it. It's an evil double-whammy from the pits of HELL.

'Pay' for L4D content? How delightfully absurd!

Price now fixed on XBOX Live (UK). Part of me doesn't want to pay for it, but I'm sure I'll end up getting it. At least we got one DLC (admittedly a vaguely pants one) for free.

My Steam updated itself sometime this afternoon. I will get round to playing this latest L4D content sometime soon. I'm currently focused on Crysis...

Well I for one have a session arranged for tonight with some mates.

    Pricing issues? Don't care.

    Charging for DLC? Don't care.

Having a good time playing a no-doubt quality product made by individuals who are earning a living entertaining me? Definately. Cheers.

Maybe you and the rest should read the whole or at least half article to realise it is a mistake and that ti will be fixxed down to 560MS points... Not so hard. And the rest seriously. Stop crying. If you dont want it and dont think its worth the 560MSP just dont pay for it. Noone is forcing you.

If Valve really wanted to allow gamers to have this extra chapter for free, why didn't they stick it on magazine discs?

OK, it wouldn't be entirely free, but it would effectively be for the people who buy the magazines regardless, and they may well end up passing on the disc to friends.

The fact is Valve, like every other developer in the industry, want to make as much money as they possibly can and console owners are treated with a little more contempt than PC owners. Using Microsoft as an excuse for charging is downright insulting to gamers. I will only buy their games second-hand to ensure they never make money from me, as a little token of my appreciation of their dishonesty!

Maybe you should read the whole article to realise that the part about the mistake with the price was added as an update AFTER those comments were made? Look up the word update if you have to.

For the record: I bought it at 800 points as I was too excited to wait. I emailed XBOX Live support and they sent me the following:
"Thank you for contacting Xbox Support. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Kindly note that the points will be automatically refunded to your points balance". So that's that sorted then.
Our versus games are taking about 45 minutes, which is a nice time. Now we just need them to patch the weird weapon & health pack spawns that have been occurring since the last update.
