Konami retro DS compilation

15 classics from yesteryear.

Leading us down memory lane this morning is Konami, which has announced a DS compilation of arcade titles due for release in the autumn.

Konami Arcade Classics will showcase 15 games, each tweaked and updated for the handheld, making the most of dual screens and wireless capabilities with leaderboards and head-to-head gameplay.

Though a full list of games is yet to be revealed, we're told that horizontal scrolling-shooter Gradius, fast-paced fighter Yie-Ar Kung Fu, and watch-checking shooter Time Pilot will all be included.

You'll also be able to choose different screen configurations to get as close to the original arcade screen ratio as possible, and there will be over 100 music tracks from the games included, as well as a biography for each, plus artwork and trivia.

Something to play in your old shell-suit, then, lets hope it's not a ham-fisted regurgitation of some fond memories.

    Konami is suddenly very nintendo-focussed...
With it's GoPets, elebits/eledees and the announced original IP Dewy for Wii...

    Money bags I wonder?
Or just a flock to the biggest user base?

It might genuinely be down to the unique interface.

Iron Horse was class, seems to be overlooked everytime, people always remember Trojan and Express Raider but not Iron Horse.
    Nice one Wonka :-)

    Parodius? aw go on.

Yie ar kung fu was an obsession with half the class in my old school days. But then everyone back then was mad on martial arts anyway - we used to trade throwing stars in the class room! Everyone owned a pair of nunchukas (before they were banned). Some even made their own pair from some chain and a 'sawn off' broom handle or two.

    Ahh the good old days...

    Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

The music from the first level of Gradius never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Hopefull they'll have Life Force/Salamander as well.

If they get Contra/Probotector on here we'll be laughing.

And can we have Blades of Steel as well? Or anything on the NES? Pweeaaase.

oddly enough i managed to make it a (brief) obsession in my somewhat more recent school days. towards the arse end of 2000 i brought one of those GBC Konami compilations in, which happened to feature Yie Ar Kung Fu, and everyone loved it. for about a week's worth of lunch breaks, anyway.

Being an old c64 owner, 20+ years on I can finally admit that the speccy version was far better than the particularly crappy c64 version. I just couldnt bring myself to say it at the time.

Another vote for Iron Horse - perhaps the best western themed game. I have the arcade PCB for that game, still have lots of fun with it.

Konami's GBA arcade collection was excellent, so here's hoping this one follows suit.

I hope "tweaked and updated" doesn't mean "enhancements" like the Revolution series - Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands and New Zealand Story didn't benefit much from their updates.

    5/10

    You see if I'm right.

Iron Horse rocked. I estimate the chances of it appearing on the compilation at 1/3,442,070.

Konami's GBA retro comp was excellent, except for the criminal lack of saving, and Nintendo don't let anyone get away with that on DS, so this should be pretty fine (indeed, I'm reckoning it'll be largely exactly the same). I'm just surprised we're going to have to wait until the autumn, when most of the work's already done.

Thatd make sense financially, so suggesting anything else would be a nonsense.
