Konami confirms PS2 re-issues

Demand brings classics back.

Konami has confirmed to Eurogamer that it is reissuing old PS2 games to shops, as a keen-eyed EG reader suspected.

"They are proper reissues," a spokesperson told us. "Konami has put them out at budget price because of demand. They are re-manufactured. They are ours."

Those PS2 games are Suikoden Tactics, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. And they will soon be joined by Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4.

"We've manufactured certain amounts depending on the title," the spokesperson added, "and they're being bought by wholesalers so will likely pop up in independent rather than chain stores."

The games will be priced between £10 and £20, we're told.

I think it's a case of rumours of the PS2's death being greatly exagerated. There's more life in the old bird than people predicted.
  • X #2 3 years ago

Shame I have all these already but it's good for them to get exposure again.
  • Widge #3 3 years ago

Holy christ, ZOE2. I'd like that again!
  • Vertius #4 3 years ago

Great, I can finally get MGS2: Substance. I've been meaning to get it. May as well pick up a ZOE game too, while I can get one cheaply.
  • aine #5 3 years ago

    Shame they're not reprinting MGS3: Subsistence. ):
  • mkreku #6 3 years ago

£10 is a pretty good price for these. £20.. not so much.
  • Cappy #7 3 years ago

Pity Gradius V isn't getting reissued too, that's almost as hard to find as the second Zone of the Enders and Subsistence these days.
  • MORZTAN #8 3 years ago

Found Subsistence brand new and dirt cheap a year ago. What a spectacular experience that was!!! Damn, what a final battle!
  • Sylpharion #9 3 years ago

I'd love to see them re-issue MGS: The Twin Snakes for Gamecube but the chances of that happening are approximately 0%.
  • YobRenoops #10 3 years ago

Arrgh don't do it. My original release of ZOE2 will go down in value! They should bring back MGS3:Subsistence
  • JayeM #11 3 years ago

    I want Subsistence. :(
  • GreyBeard #12 3 years ago

Konami released some cracking stuff on PS2. Nice to see them reissued.
  • KrissAkabusi #13 3 years ago

Couldn't they stick some of these on a Blu-ray disk for PS3 given the lack of back compat, or would that hamper Sony's PSN plans.
  • andywilkie35 #14 3 years ago

Might pick up Silent Hills 3 and 4
  • Evolution #15 3 years ago

Hah, ZOE2, I missed this for a tenner about 4 years ago and never saw it again. It goes for quite a bit on ebay and such so I'm happy :)
  • bad09 #16 3 years ago

    "Shame they're not reprinting MGS3: Subsistence. ):

Found that purely by accident for £19.99 the other week \o/ Apparently it has been known to go for like £65 on Ebay!

Anyway good for them, far too many pubs/devs forget that some may actually still want their games. I wonder, is this a sign they know something we don't about a certain non B/C machine

I was hoping to see Karaoke Revolution somewhere on that list. Too bad.

"Found Subsistence brand new and dirt cheap a year ago. What a spectacular experience that was!!! Damn, what a final battle!"

    Same here. :)
  • Steroyd #19 3 years ago

Sony's missing a trick in not getting PS2 games on PSN already!
  • fjharps #20 3 years ago

Suikoden Tactics?? one of the weakest entries to the series. How about Suikoden 3 never released in Europe always wanted to play that one
  • dsmx #21 3 years ago

I got the special 3 disk version of MGS3:Subsistence. Bow down to my greatness.
  • dudefella #22 3 years ago

    Woo, and indeed, hoo!

More people should DEFINITELY play Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, that game is incredible. And I've been meaning to play Silent Hill 2.
  • chessboxer #23 3 years ago

    @ Steroyd

Until all PS3's can play PS2 games, Sony aren't missing much as most of the 23.8m PS3's out there don't have BC. It also stops people from buying games that they cannot play because unfortunately, many people don't pay attention to things like compatibility and will assume that if it's available to buy, it will work. Then they will blame Sony for making it available in the first place.
  • SEVQA #24 3 years ago

Well I think this is good news and a good sign for people who want cheap games. Really Sony put BC back into the PS3.
  • Golgo #25 3 years ago

  • crisotunity #26 3 years ago

Ok - rainy Friday afternoon conspiracy theory :-)
What if these re-releases are a sign that the imminent, redesigned PS3-slim will regain backwards compatibility?
  • kangarootoo #27 3 years ago

    @dudefella

SH2 is the best of the lot imo. Well worth tracking down. I could only play it in shortish doses, as I just found it too wearing to play for long periods of time. You can only have so much adrenaline before your head starts to go weird :)
  • djcool3005 #28 3 years ago

I Hope they make MGS3 Subsistence. I always wanted it but it was very rare and sells for quite a bit of money on ebay
  • aine #29 3 years ago

@crisotunity - doubt it. the PS2 is still selling fairly well. it's just a shame most publishers (and Sony) have abandoned it so much faster than they did the PS1 - the only games it gets anymore are film licenses, Guitar Hero and the very occasional late-release JRPG. there's no sign of anything like the fantastic budget oddness the PS1 got towards the end of its life courtesy of Midas and the like.
  • Golgo #30 3 years ago

I just blagged me a fresh copy (judging by new PEGI logo) of ZOE2 off of of a seller on Ebay. Hope it's the real deal...
  • SpaceMonkey77 #31 3 years ago

Nice idea. Guess I can get me Zoe2 now. Good move, Konami.

Now, about Sunset Riders and Snatcher, for Xbox Live?
  • Jonsend #32 3 years ago

And I just paid £30 for ZoE2 a couple of weeks ago. At least my Subsistence is still worth something.
  • jsfdj #33 3 years ago

Now we need Sony to support their own platform and re-release (again) ICO - it's one of those games that you complete and sell/trade in, then years later wish you hadn't.....
  • FenderMaster #34 3 years ago

    ZOE 2?!

    AT LAST!!

i can finally find a copy for a reasonable price! thank you Konami, from the bottom of my heart!
  • GamesConnoisseur #35 3 years ago

    ^^
First rule of mine... DONT trade in 'classical' title!

When you look back and see what you traded in for say ICO and got FIFA04 or summat? Certainly wasnt worth it next to the golden dust that is ICO or other of its calibre.

Great that PS2 get reissues and sad that lots of PS3 owners wont have fun unless a) They still got working PS2 b) the launch PS3 60gb model or c) SONY DAMN come out and confirm they will update all PS3 with software emulation.

They PATENTED the PS2 emulation codings, so I m sure this will be cooooomming anytime soon!
  • Razorus #36 3 years ago

    Fucking Nice.
I wish I could play ZOE 1 and 2 on my PS3 though. *sad face*
Hopefully ZOE2 will be available for download and ZOE3 is in the making. Hopefully.
  • InvisibleCrane #37 3 years ago

I find it a bit odd that they are re-releasing ZOE The 2nd Runner and not the first one (I have both anyway)
  • Bloodhunter #38 3 years ago

wow never heard how much subsistence was selling for, i love it but havent played it for yonks

shame i lent it to a friend a few years ago :(
  • dsmx #39 3 years ago

I'll sit here and stroke my copy of MGS3:subsistence 3 disk version and laugh and the fool who traded it in..
  • crazyhorse174 #40 3 years ago

Can't you get most of these cheaper - and brand new - if you hunt about on the net? eBay or Amazon?
  • FenderMaster #41 3 years ago

wow.... i saw MGS 3 Subsistance for £300 on amazon!!

well, it seems that ZOE 2 has already been renewed on amazon.co.uk so its at £17
  • bad09 #42 3 years ago

"I'll sit here and stroke my copy of MGS3:subsistence 3 disk version and laugh and the fool who traded it in.."

    I agree

    / strokes his own copy

You know what, after this article I've been thinking about MGS all day! I reckon Substance and Subsistance willl get a go in a little while. Hooray for Friday night in \o/

/ beats up girlyman Raiden, puts on Snake Eater (AWESOME theme!), grabs the boot polish and eats a snake...alright it's a earthworm. No snakes in SE London sadly......

Who is demanding this stuff? Not that I have a problem with it all but I wonder who is picketing Konami's doors or writing strong letters to the CEO and making online petitions.

Last I heard about the PS2 was when they made that cut down slim line version, that was years ago.
  • Stepharneo #44 3 years ago

Ahhh crap....I JUST bought ZOE2 on ebay for a ridiculous price. I still love it though.
  • Incarta #45 3 years ago

Eurogamer to re-review these games I hope? See how well they've aged and all that...
  • Rabbinash #46 3 years ago

I know the online servers for Subsistence are all gone, but can't you play the game over LAN?
  • VMerken #47 3 years ago

Love the way the Konami guy talks, "They are re-manufactured. They are ours."

    We are machine!
  • Zaltan #48 3 years ago

ZOE 2 for a tenner might be cool.
  • zedzee #49 3 years ago

    A. "We've got bugger all for the PS3, so let's release some proper games for a change."
    B. "Dev cycles for PS3 are extortionate and we've got MS/Nintendo knocking on our door, so let's pretend we still like Sony."
    C. "These have been in our warehouse in Mozambique for a trillion years now and we've just been waiting for the right moment to flog them and pretend we're reissuing them."
    D. "We didn't make enough Subsistence, because it cost too much to make and we made a loss on it, so let's get rid of all the Substance copies we've got in that Mozambique warehouse and hopefully people will be stupid enough to buy it, while we work out how to sell it cheaper digitally, through PSN in the near future."
    E. "Shit, the PS2 is making a bit of a come-back but we've trashed all our dev kits now. So, how do we sell something in that market? I know - let's flog our old stock sitting on the shelves in our warehouse in Mozambique! Brilliant...Sold!!!"

    Take your pick...

Ah good old Konami, if only they could actually rerelease games for live formats that were difficult to hold off far too early such as the European Suikoden Tierkreis (which I imported despite usually trying to support Euro market after waiting 3 months for any shop to get them back in stock) or Marbles: Balance Challenge (which I still haven't got hold of yet)... I never understood releasing things in too limited a quantity, and if games are selling for RRP or higher on ebay then surely there is still a market out there...
  • Xeopuppy #51 3 years ago

    Yeeeessssss, ZOE 2, come on...

    I'll have Silent Hill 2, 3 & 4 as well, thank you...
  • Collymilad #52 3 years ago

"EUROgamer still quoting all prices in sterling. Well done chaps. 15e in gamestop in the eurozone. The silent hill re-issues are already with us as of last week. "

Yeah, damn Eurogamer.NET, the BRITISH part of EG, quoting prices in sterling.

    Damn them i tell you.
  • sargulesh #53 3 years ago

Yeah, they NEED to reissue Subsistence ASAP. ZoE2 is only £30 on eBay. I've seen Subsistence run for £60, which is ridic. considering you can pick it up new on NTSC for $20.
  • FogHeart #54 3 years ago

Re: ZOE2. The huge epic battle between two armies of mechs still counts in my mind as one of the pinnacles of gaming. You're just think about how hard it is then you see a massive wave of new enemies on your radar and flip out. I was so chuffed to get 'Genius Runner'. The game rewards you with the massively fun battleship level right after. The ZOE series should have been as long-lived and successful as SH and RE.
  • GreyBeard #55 3 years ago

Its most probably the subsistence version of MGS3 on the disc anyway. There's no point in releasing the multiplayer disc as those servers got shut down (last year I think), and the game-as-movie third disc was a limited edition bonus.

Its not like Konami dont have a track record of expanding titles for re-release in the west. For example the platinum re-issue of SH2 had the "Born From a Wish" extra-scenario that was previously exclusive to the Xbox version.
  • lolife.se #56 3 years ago

Great, but where are the Castlevania games? Specifically, where is Lament Of Innocence?
    Edited by 1 at 09/08/09 @ 15:49
  • twh104 #57 3 years ago

Trouble with Subsistence is they moved most of the "bonus" content to Disc 2 including Secret Theater, MG&MG2 so even if it is just Disc 1, youll only benefit from the new Camera.
  • FenderMaster #58 3 years ago

but that new camera alone makes the game much more enjoyable, it's hard to overstate just how bad Snake Eater's camera was...

without the radar from previous mgs games, you constantly rn into the sighlines of guards you couldn't see, because the camera only shows 3 feet ahead of you... the only solution was to tap R1 for first person camera every 5 seconds...
  • SnoopDop #59 3 years ago

"Yeah, damn Eurogamer.NET, the BRITISH part of EG, quoting prices in sterling."

They should put it as Eurogamer.CO.UK if it is british
  • Slipstream #60 3 years ago

Konami also have an excellent PSone back catalogue.

Suikoden I and II, Castlevania SOTN, Vandal Hearts I and II, Track and field, MGS + Special Missions to name but few.
Since these would all be compatible with PS2 I see no harm in putting these on a disc or 2 for a tenner.
  • Daryoon #61 3 years ago

Nice. But could be better? Why can't they follow the DVD industry and do series boxsets or something? ZOE and ZOE2 for £15! Silent Hill 2-4 for £20! etc.
  • Tio #62 3 years ago

    Vandal hearts ....please...
  • LHH #63 3 years ago

Does anyone know of any release dates or can we expect to see them on shelves in the next few days?
