Kojima wishes people would stop asking about MGS4 on 360

Future projects could be multiplatform.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has told Eurogamer that he looks forward to a day when people stop asking him whether MGS4 is coming out on Xbox 360.

"I've been doing a lot of interviews and stage shows, and half the questions are like 'Will MGS4 be coming out on 360 or other formats?', and in the near future I hope they'll ask me about Metal Gear, about us, about our future projects, and will stop caring about the hardware," Kojima told Eurogamer in an interview published today.

Pressed on MGS4's exclusivity and the possibility of an Xbox 360 port, Kojima reiterated that the PS3 had been chosen because he believed that the series' success had been entwined with PlayStation's, and admitted that "because MGS4 was optimised for the PS3 it is probably not possible".

"But, you know, what kind of disturbs me sometimes, because a lot of people ask me about this PS3/360 question, is that it's not about the hardware - I want people to look at the game itself. Sometimes I even feel like it should be on a PC so that people don't ask me about hardware and platforms," he said.

Asked whether he would develop multiplatform games in future, Kojima said: "If we're talking about the future - not MGS4, but my future titles, if we're referring to that - if the hardware technology rises then obviously, you know, it won't be based on the hardware anymore. Probably I will first create the software and then, um, it's a strange word to say, but port to other hardware if that technological ability rises in all areas."

It's an approach that's already reaping rewards for others, including fellow Japanese developer Capcom, whose teams are known to develop games using an engine running on the PC platform, which can then be ported to PS3 and 360 - Resident Evil 5 being the latest example.

    How much of a clearer answer do you want from the man? The game will stay on the PS3 and that ends it. If you want the damn game so bad, then buy a PS3 and quit the bitching.

    I won't be buying MGS4 until it's released on 360 and can think of another 10 to 20 million others that won't either... Would you really limit yourself to that degree?

    If Valve have reconsidered making games for the PS3 when they consider it a 'total disaster on so many levels' (not my opinion by-the-way), then Kojima must have a REALLY bad opinion of the 360, if he didn't decide to do it.

    The game really isn't that good anyway (and I am a fan of the series). Got the game on release day, clocked it within a day or two and traded it back in. I've never missed it. To be honest, if you don't own a PS3, just watch the cut scenes on youtube. You get most of the game for free by just doing that..

    I was actually considering buying a ps3 instead of a 360 just to play mgs4, then it hit me like a slippery fish, "i'm going to pay three hundred and forty pounds to play one game".Having now played the likes of gears of war, condemned and pgr4 i know i made the right choice, i'm just going to wait a few years then pick up a pre-owned ps3 and mgs4, yes, i really am that tight.

    Yeah sorry, my mistake - I only mentioned the people that own 360s. I'm sure there are WAY more than 10 to 20 million gamers that wouldn't buy a PS3 for one game...

    The guy really is seriously limiting the market. I'm just not sure of the reasoning.

    Wasn't MGS originally a game that was supposed to appeal to the western market? Then why would you cut a fair wedge of the market that play games on a machine that's built and played by Europe (well UK) and the USA?? The mind boggles.

He has said a hundred times it isn't coming to the 360, it's been said by Sony head reps at EVERY conference that the damn game was ever shown that it's a PS3 exclusive. Get over yourselves you bitter fanboys. If you want it, get a PS3. Don't give me no "Kojima is a Sony fanboy" crap because last time I checked, Gears of War, Infinite Undiscovery and Mass Effect are XBOX 360 exclusives, so are Epic, Bioware and Square Enix fanboys?!

    I like the Star Ocean series and if it definitely isn't coming to the PS3, then I'll get a 360 (when they sort out the bloody rrod)

    ......and to the person who said that MGS4 isn't that good, well that's your opinion, I thought it was amazing and it seems, by looking at Metacritic, alot of other people agree :)

    Please don't deviate from my point - It's very easy for someone to read into a comment and totally misinterpret what they're trying to say. I'm DO NOT dislike Sony - I bought a PS, PS2, and a PSP!

    My point is (I think it's fairly simple to understand): Kojima IS LIMITING audiences by not releasing a game on a system that has a large install base.

    MGS4 is not the only decent game on PS3, ther are loads of games on PS3 that are more than just decent.

    Not all of those 10-20 million 360 owners want to play MGS at all, and not all of those 10-20 million 360 owners don't have a PS3 also on which to play it on. Your argument is so retarded words can barely describe it. Hell not even all the PS3 owners bought MGS4 so how does that idiotic argument hold any credibility.

    The game isn't that good. It only got 94% on metacritic and is one of, if not the highest rated exclusives this year. I do feel sorry for 360 only owners missing out though.

    Why are people so thick.

    It doesnt matter whats happened in the past. It doesnt matter what people say. It is obviously a flagship title that is NEVER going to be ported to the 360 - and so it bloody well shouldnt either.

    Consoles deserve exclusives - and even if it dies out in the future its something to hang on to for now. I have both PS3 and 360, but people arnt expecting gears 2 to go on PS3 so why do people keep asking about MGS4. To be honest, Its not even that great so stop thinkin you are missing out - but then, I didnt thin Halo 3 or Gears was as good as the hype wither so maybe its just me.

    But we are seeing exclusives die out. like GTA, Final Fantasy etc, so at least at this stage people should have the intelligence to stop asking the same quesiton of will it be ported to 360. The man says no, the industry says no, the hardware definately says no, regardless of "microsoft's wallet size". Move on and play something else!!

    macrosoft pull the same thing all the time so its just the usual console politics. such is life gamers.

    I'd like to play MGS4 but SDF reminds me in a daily basis not to. It has nothing to do with branding, or money, or bollocks, it's the SDF (aka the swams, and headbogs, and bligs of this world).

    ... Well, people would probably stop asking if kojima was giving better reasons than this one, for a start. Just say that you signed a xx(x?) million $ deal with sony for x years of exclusivity (and there wouldn't be anything wrong with that) and then we'll stop asking.
    Because if you didn't, it simply makes no sense from a business standpoint to keep such an expensive game exclusive for a console with such a small install base. That's why GTA4, DMC4, FF13, assassin's creed, bioshock, oblivion, UT3 (and the list goes on) all went multiplatform in the first place...

    Also, the game has sold immensely well, over 3 million, the PS3 userbase is not as small as the fanboys would like to argue, and obviously not small enough to support a title like MGS.

    What. The. Hell. Who gives a crap what anyone says, just buy if you want it. Don't buy it if you're not interested. Noone would have a go at you if you turn around and say "MGS isn't my cup of tea", but I do think you're missing out on a great game if you won't play it because of "the people associated with the platform".

    I've met plenty of absolute twats on both PSN and Xbox LIVE, its something to do with people playing games anonymously, not whether they're fanboys.

    Fair enough, I see your point. I really apologise for confusing you with the likes of Kryon.

    But the fact is, that title already recovered the investment, gave them a profit, and there is the added cost of porting an engine that's PS3 optimised to the 360. It's something they'd rather not do at this point, regardless of market within reach. Not to mention Sony "support" ;)

    Regardless, it's pretty much settled by now that MGS5 will be multiplatform (built in that way from scratch) at any rate.

    Ok, after reading the comments here, I've decided to have my say.

    It seems they're are a lot of 360 fanboy's in here who are upset that MGS 4 is ps3 exclusive, GROW UP!.

    It's funny, the ps3 get exclusives and the 360 fanboy's come out in full force b*tching and moaning about a specific game, in this case MGS 4.

    On every ps3 exclusive message board you get people asking when it will be released on the 360, I hardly see anyone asking for a ps3 port if it's 360 exclusive.

    To me 360 fanboy's/owners are greedy, they want every game under the sun to be released or ported to they're precious console and only their's.

    I own both console's and the way I see it is, if one console can have exclusive's, why can't the others?

    You bought only one of the said console's, deal with it.

    Me, I'll enjoy the exclusive's on each machine and laugh at you fanboy's trolling each other's message board's.

    Imo MGS should stay as a Playstation exclusive, Micro$oft has Gears, Halo, Fable etc.

    I'd like to say, just because I put Micro$oft, doesn't make me a Sony fanboy (I hate Micro$oft), I play games not console's, however, I do prefer the ps3 over the 360 (I preferred the snes to the megadrive).


    If I was loyal or a fanboy to any company, it'd be Nintendo.


    If Hideo Kojima ever decided to make Zoe (Zone Of The Enders) 3, I'd like it to be a ps3 exclusive, just like any Halo project to stay 360 exclusive.

    I hate Micro$oft, I do own a 360 though and its a decent machine that has faults, but what doesn't? My ps3 is sorta broke.

    Every console/system (ds, psp, wii, ps3, 360, pc) have exclusive's, the way I see it, if the 360 can, so should the ps3.

    @ps3owner; I'll update you: it wasn't that bad, JMM got a bit nervous but he's ok. Kojima remains a touchy subject, he's a spiritual guru to many. M'string' spawned along with 'hate'. A generation gap or at least a cultural diference made a fulgural appearence (or it seemed). All in all pretty regular stuff, I guess.

    Just save up some money and buy a PS3, dammit! And it's not like MGS4 is the only playable PS3 game. The PS3 has great games and it's only getting better. Buy a PS3 in addition or sell your X360. It's not a hard decision. MGS4 is an awesome PS3 exclusive.

    I thought a port would almost be mandatory considering the amount of money spent to develop the game and the # of copies sold (not that it didn't sell a good deal, but sales weren't all that stellar).

    Anyway, why would 360 owners want this game on the 360? It would be like a hundred discs.

    If he's sick of the question, why doesn't he answer it then?? A clear yes or no would be fine thanks. He says he wishes people would just look at the game, yes that would be nice, but I don't have a PS3 and I certainly don't have enough to buy a very expensive console for just one game.

    Regardless of the console war, its very clear that many other MGS fans are in the same boat and would be very interested in a 360 version of the game. So why the hell not make one?? Its not as if making one would make the PS3 version any less good would it?

    Very good sales, yes, but when you have a game that is one of, if not THE, most expensive ever to develop, you need stellar. And, yes, they need to be Halo or GTAIV or COD4 like.

    Remember, Kojima admitted they wouldn't be doing well unless they sold 1m copies on the 1st day. I don't know if they reached that goal, considering it didn't sell 1m in the 1st two full weeks of US sales. Can't speak for the entire world, though.

    "Political" reasons for keeping it on the PlayStation aside, didn't MGS4 fill up most of a dual layer Blu Ray disk? And with compression on top of that (assuming it was that which necessitated the lengthy installs)? In which case presumably it'd need to be split across many DVDs were it to come to the Xbox.

    Trust me, a quick disk swap now and then would be much less of a pain in the arse (and alot quicker) than the initial 8min install and then the 5min installs between each bloody level. Anyway, the game is pretty cack tbh. The cut scenes are good if you're into the MGS franchise but gaming-wise it's dull as dish water, that level where you have to secretly follow a member of the resistance was pure tedium. Meh.

    Remember, Kojima admitted they wouldn't be doing well unless they sold 1m copies on the 1st day. I don't know if they reached that goal, considering it didn't sell 1m in the 1st two full weeks of US sales. Can't speak for the entire world, though.

    In Europe and Japan together, it sold over 1 million in the release day.

    Actually the ps3 isnt far behind the 360 in terms of console sales... My guess is it'll overtake the 360 within a year.

    Besides, there are probably MORE ps3 owners out there than 360 owners.. my guess is so many 360's are sold because people buy 2 or 3 replacements for their broken ones :-)

    And besides, it'd have to come on 10 dvds or something stupid..

    I'd need some kind of proof (other than vgchartz) to believe this. I'm not saying it's outside the realm of possibility, but just you saying it doesn't make it true.

    I have more than 1 360, but not because it broke it´s because of EG foruns - most of PS3ers scare me, or are just plain unpolite. I have the urge to buy a console every year. I just have to keep buying 360s.

    Sony shop chicks are nice though, and they don´t seem to give a fuck to 360s. Guess only the foruns have nightmare with them.

    TBH honest it's always good to have decent exclusives on ANY console, it encourages more sales from people already with machine. MGS is the one game to encourage me to buy PS (HD DVD's death helped but still...) and it was worth it I feel, even as a 360 owner. While I can't say the "year of the Playstation" moved me that much so far (except MGS4 of course) there has still been some bloody good games this year. Many of you know I think the 360 is great and worthy of all gamers but TBH I've been more excited about Sony's exclusives this year, fix up MS... Just PLEASE Sony FFS give us B/C!

    I can understand first party games being system exclusive, games made by MS stay on an MS console, games made by Sony stay with the PS, but when companies like capcom made dead rising exclusive to 360, it kind of stings that a supposedly impartial company has signed timed exclusivity rights with the console you didn't pick. its like flipping a coin when deciding which console to get, because the exclusive first party games might be mediocre on both fronts, and so far they have been.

    if the marketing guy for MS had screwed up his pitch that morning, maybe it would have ended up PS exclusive, or multi platform from the start.

    admittedly a large portion of 360 exclusives are only timed exclusives and may well end up superior versions on the PS3 eventually, so what i think every 360 fanboy, myself included, wants to know is this: would Konami, a supposedly impartial games company, be keeping MGS4 as permanent exclusive, which they obviously are not at liberty to reveal for various legally binding reasons, or is this another timed exclusive?

    Kojima has hinted in the past that he would like to do this or that, and sometimes it has come to fruition and sometimes it has not.

    basically we are pining for a straight answer, that he isn't allowed to give, even if it was a straight yes or a straight no. i imagine the reason is in the Sony contract. if you reveal that a version is definitely coming to the 360 down the line, then 360 fanboys will hold their breath for it. if you make out that it is exclusive, forever, then they might convert. however it would be a PR disaster and your credibility would sink lower than a scorpions scrotum in gamers eyes if you made fanboys convert for one game which then comes out on their original system of choice, hence the ambiguity. which is why Kojima wishes people would stop asking him about it.

    Only the RROD is covered under warantee.. i've also had a randomly crashing xbox and one where the disc drive crapped out... If they werent under warantee i'd have been boned (and would have to buy a new one to play the many games i own for it).

    As it stands.. i think it might be simpler to sell the machine and games and buy a ps3 and try to get some ps3 games 2nd hand...

    I guess people keep asking because they'd like to play it, but not enough to go out and spend £300 on another console to do so. I guess it will happen at some point, along with a PC version, just not until the PS3 exclusivity runs out, by which time nobody will want to buy it and the whole thing will be a repeat of the Xbox port last time.

    People keep whining on about wanting it on the 360 but are told it's shit, it's just one long cutscene innit!

    And to play devil's advocate again: Maybe PS3 owners aren't interested in any exclusives on the 360 and thats why they don't own the machine. I can only think of one game I want to play and thats Gears 2 but after playing Gears 1 I hope it's longer than that as it was way too short. And please don't mention Fable 2 or Halo anything as they do not interest me at all!

    The thing that stands out for me is the fact that when games are optimized and pushed on the ps3 platform and is going to be even more common, that porting to 360 may be impossible or lose quality. Up until now things have been the other way round due to the return on 360 being greater!

    But that’s changing and we are entering an unfortunate era where exclusivity will by down to cleaver marketing and financial muscle! Which irrelevant of our opinions console or preferred game makes absolutely no difference what so ever?

    It's fine. It was never going to be ported.

    MGS4 has done it's job. Nearly 1.4 million sold in the first day, and by now over 4 million have been shipped (3.5 million sold). Plus it raised PS3 sales in Japan by 700% and by 180% in America.
