Kojima lists his top five games News

News by Ellie Gibson

4 July, 2008

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has revealed his top five games, which just happen to include Metal Gear Solid.

According to Gamerush, Kojima was speaking to Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun.

He listed the Super Mario Bros. series, Outer World and Xevious as being amongst the most memorable and influential games for him, along with Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken (an '80s adventure game released only in Japan). And, of course, Metal Gear Solid.

"Games are a composite art that evolves absorbing new technologies," Kojima said. Jolly good.

MGS was certainly memorable and influential for me, I'm sure it'd be even more so if I made the bloody thing.

Don't make him out to be a cock when he hasn't said anything bad.

To be fair, it's not really done to include your own bloody games when someone asks a developer to name their top 5.

from an interview with geezer buttler (black sabbath bass player)
what is your favorite heavy metal album? "MasterS of reality by black sabbath" (he got the name of his own album wrong)

this is similarly ridiculous!

If Outer world = Another World by Eric Chahi, I couldn't agree more with Ideo. One of the best game ever.

the Super Mario Bros. series

The entire series? Not exactly top five games is it? ;)

Ellie didn't actually read the original article BTW.

The Yomiuri article said:

"Asked to mention memorable or influential games for him, Kojima cited five: the ultrapopular Super Mario Bros series and Port Pia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken, both first released in 1985, Xevious, first marketed in 1984, Outer World, released in 1992, and MGS, in 1998."

I'd say Another World was a piece of art. Every aspect of it was one man's uncompromised vision.

Not to reopen the old can of worms, but all videogames involve pieces of art, even if they can't always (and usually can't) be considered art in and of themselves.

But just because the gallery isn't art, doesn't mean the art within isn't either.

And that includes galleries full of crap art, of which there are many.

@Psiloc: "Is a big fan of his own work" means precisely what it says - he likes his own work. The article never makes a judgement whether this is a good or bad thing - it's left to the reader to decide.

I'd suggest you happen to think that this makes him a cock then.

I think we all inferred a little snigger in the subtitle though, didn't we?

Why not? I know in essence, a designer is meant to step back and think of the audience to make design decisions, but all I take from this is that he was fortunate enough to be in the main audience for a game he has worked on.

If the question would have been "name the 5 most influential games", then I would agree with you.

Yeah, when I read the subtitle I did think something along those lines. But then I read the article and found out it was pretty much pulled out of the air. I think there's a huge difference between saying your own game was memorable and saying your own game was one of the top 5 games ever.

The original article said - both memorable or influential. Not his favourite games. Perhaps he'll never forget making MGS because of the experience, because perhaps it was difficult, perhaps because he got a really good BJ at at the time. Who knows, but it was memorable for him. Fair enough.

you'd kind of expect him to find MGS a little bit memorable from his perspective wouldn't you ?

Great games, all. So what if he likes his own work enough to rate it in that way? Not quite sure I'd be able to do the same with anything I've worked on, but I've not been responsible for the creation of a multi-million-selling blockbuster, either.

Ha ha. I have a cartridge of Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken for my Famicom but I can't get past the first couple of screens because of the language barrier. It sold absolute bucketloads on release in Japan.
