Killzone 3 is coming, promises Tretton

Sony boss "saving the batter" for E3.

Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton has said a third instalment in the Killzone series is on the way.

He was speaking to Game Trailers during the PlayStation Move event at the Game Developers Conference. "This is just the frosting on the cake," he said. "I'm saving the batter for E3. We will absolutely bring the heat."

When asked whether said batter will include an official Killzone 3 announcement, Tretton pointed out that Sony owns Guerrilla Games and that the studio did "a great job" on the first two titles.

"I don't know if you'll see announcements about it, but I can promise you a Killzone 3," he added.

Tretton was then asked whether we'll see anything of Agent at E3. "That's a better question for our friends at Rockstar," he replied, but did confirm the game is a PlayStation 3 exclusive. "I've seen good stuff, I'm very confident in Rockstar," Tretton said.

This year's E3 will take place from 15th - 17th June at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Eurogamer will be there, bringing you all the batter as it happens.

So no actual news whatsoever in this article :/
  • altitude2k #2 2 years ago

I'm no marketing expert, but even I can see the merit in having rumours of a reveal floating around followed by a big launch at E3. Just coming out and saying that it is coming out - whilst honest - lessens the impact, surely?
  • Beano #3 2 years ago

    KZ3 is a no-brainer and Tretton's claims doesn't change anything :)
  • ISmoke #4 2 years ago

Untill there's a Co-op annoucement, I'm not interested. I jumped on the Hype train for KZ2. I'm not doing that again.
  • Beano #5 2 years ago

Please please... no more co-op. Hate to see good games ruined because developers belive that co-op is a requirement and try to squeee it in where it doesn't fit. I would rather have they made a seperate co-op mode and keep campain a singleplayer experience... like R2.

Killzone 2 was excellent. Except the last bit dragged it down somewhat. Still excellent. Look forward to the third installment.

More than anything... control lag to be improved, to be on par with other big FPS pretty please! But if you have to, make it optional for the 'KZ' veteran who swears by the control latency to choose do so!
  • LHH #9 2 years ago

Hopefully it won't be a as brown as 2 as otherwise it was a damn fine game, especially the mulitplayer.

I was one of the ones that loved the multiplayer, but please Guerilla, listen to your beta testers. They pointed out a lot of the balancing issues way before the general public got frustrated with them.

And QA will likely have pointed them out before that, I sometimes think that some games are unbalanced by design in order to provide "an easier path" for those that just want to win and aren't tbothered about competition of enjoyment.

As for KZ3, at the moment I can take it or leave it, though that could very well change once we get the proper reveal.

    @ ISmoke.

I did the same. Worst game in my PS3 collection. KZ2 really isn't worth talking about.

Played KZ2 last night, showed it some people who haven't played it before / know nothing about it, first thing they said was "why's it so slow?" (referring to the shit-muddy control system)

"I'm saving the batter for E3."

That's a disturbing bit of imagery. I didn't think of baseball.

KZ2 was awesome, can't wait for the 3rd installment. A co-op campaign of some sort (like the MW2 spec-ops) would be a great bonus. I'm sure that Guerrilla will have been listening to the gamers.

Excellent, just hope the final level is less difficult this time!

For what it's worth I liked Killzone 2, the problem a lot of people seemed to have had with it was expecting CoD4 type game play.

Which incidentally is the same reason people complain about BFBC2.

I disagree. I think a lot of the time it is very hard for designers (people), to change a huge dynamic in a game they have spent so much time crafting. Hearing them talk about the assault class in detail in interviews was interesting. They clearly put a lot of thought into it, but I think they didn't want to admit that combining rocket launchers with infinite ammo, double speed and double armour was unbalancing.

Batter? Bring the heat? How old is this guy, 12?

Oh no, sorry, he's American which equates to the same thing.

Killzone has always been rife with difficulty spikes, though. Killzone Liberation in particular was a great little game, mired by completely unnecessarily contrived set-pieces that would bring your progress to a crunching halt.

Fortunately you could get past these in co-op mode, as the AI wasn't any stronger, but still - I find barriers to progression to be a hallmark of the Killzone franchise and it's the reason I've never really warmed to it.

The main issue with KZ was how hard the last level was of the game, and i was playing it on easy... it was certainly not balanced right... i really enjoyed it, and it looked great. I personally didnt have any said "lag" issues... i guess different people feel different feedback/speeds.

So i dont mind a KZ3, i think they spent all that money on a great looking FPS engine, it would be stupid for them to drop it... the PS3 has to have some of its own FPS games... why not continue with it.
  • alcides #22 2 years ago

Complaining about the lag is prejudiced. In other shooters players move at the speed of light, well, it's not like that in real life. It take me more than a quarter of a second to crouch or duck. Games are not real, but they should not set a standard "feel" either but explore different paths. As long as the speed is the same for everyone I don't see the problem.

Not a great fan of the genre, and the most enjoyable part for me was the bossfight against the helicopter. I think lag gives the feeling of having heavy gear on and really being on the field. The camera also helped immersion.

But purists want to glide like a sodding ballerine, perhaps? I thought Killzone did the kind of things that was expected since the beginnings of FPS but not yet possible (or explored, more likely, in ageing franchizes).

    @Quak

    +1

annoys the piss out of me as well. Jack Black has a lot to answer for..

Never rated KZ2 as highly as many, left me cold tbh. Still, must finish the final showdown with General Razek (or whatever his name is) at somepoint, tried for a couple of hours but he kept kicking my arse!
  • berryl227 #25 2 years ago

    @ darren1976

yep the same mate tried it for hours then left it tried it again for a few hours. He totally canned me! Still really enjoyed the game though just wished i could have finished the damn thing.

Also thought the MP had a few really great touchs the 'rolling' game modes in play was a great idea. They just need to iron out the run and gun mechanic to make it a little more strategic.....

Indeed. The two-stage battle in Visari Palace before you fight with Radec was one of the most balls-crushingly difficult section of any FPS I have ever played. I finished it on Elite, and was thanking all manner of gods when that fight ended. In comparison, Radec was easy.

I had KZ2 but I hated the controls on it. It was a really cool game, but I couldnt play it for long because of the dated controls, which was a real shame.

I will 100% look into KZ3 if they improve upon this.
