Is there any significance to this shot being in a darkened room with generic wall textures and a single Hellgast?

This will not be pretty. Perhaps the outdoor scenes will fair better. I suppose as long as it matches gears for visuals and gameplay, then they may get off with just a bloody nose.
  • spongebob #7 5 years ago

That shadowmap on the wall behind the baddie looks pretty bad. Very rough. Other than that, whatever....

  • Devious_Droid #9 5 years ago

    Oh.... shit.

I can only hope this is one of those very unfortunate screenshots that don't do the game-engine any favours.
  • Hangman #10 5 years ago

Why release this? This is bound to be taken out of context like any single screen of any anticipated game. People complaining about the lack of triple z xy buffermapping, doesn't have shit to do with gameplay or atmosphere.

it would make a good expressionist painting:
"splash of grey with glowing dots"
  • zooms #13 5 years ago

It's almost, but not quite, totally unlike how we were told it would look like from the E3 2005 Killzone 2 video.
  • DrDamn #14 5 years ago

    "Why release this?"

Maybe trying to significantly lower expectations in order to exceed them?

    /clutches at straws
  • Triggerhappytel #15 5 years ago

I don't think it looks that bad, but you can't exactly tell a lot from a single, dark screenshot, eh?

Hopefully there'll be some gameplay footage later in the week.
  • urban #16 5 years ago

they could have gotten a better one than that surely.
  • JediMasterMalik #17 5 years ago

It doesn't look terribkle, but it does make me wanna see it motion.

what a rubbish first screenshot to release. the detail on that model is rubbish.

Looks like it might get as "good" a rating as its predecessor....

    5/10.
  • nicholasfernando #24 5 years ago

Hmmm...I don't think it's that bad. Obviously there is the aliasing issue that's generally a playstation issue and the texturing is very hit and miss. This could be an early build though. I think that whole E3 2005 sony scam passing off cg as ps3 graphics is really going to hurt this game which is unfair to the devs. Hopefully it will be gears of war standard or better by the time it's released.

I do feel sorry for sony though because they really put so much effort into 'cell' and the dividend isn't paying because they paired it up with a not very powerful nvidia chip (G70). Nvidia are such rip off merchants, they did the same con with the original xbox so i'm glad m$ dropped them. Anyway, i've got a 360 so i'm pretty chuffed. ATI have done a great job with the 360 graphics chip and i'm really looking forward to all the great games round the corner.

I think the killzone screen looks worse because they put it next to the awesome bioshock screen. I think ps3 fanboys and haters should not debate this too much as NO console of this generation will output graphics like the cg demo sony used at e3 2005 for a game.

Forgot to mention the most important aspect of any game ....gameplay! :) There are some prettier screens of killzone over on ign ps3 section if anyone is interested. You youngsters eh! You want the earth and the heavens! I would much prefer a game with okay graphics and awesome gameplay than the other way around...

The shadows dont look bad when its moving - infact the whole thing is quite impressive. Tickle me surprised.
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #38 5 years ago

The new shots look a hell of a lot better. And the trailer looks alright - the opening airdrop over the city is fantastic. But once you see the actual gameplay, it all looks a bit too grey and (in a level-design way) boxy. Like they've sacrificed close-up detail for immense scope and huge levels.

    It's like FEAR meets Gears!

Bit I'm still a bit "meh". Compared to Halo 3 and the innevitable Gears 2, I think it'll struggle.
  • stoopidgreg #39 5 years ago

hm, the other shots are a bit more impressive than the first. mainly because of the copious amounts of blur and noisy camera filters...

i for one think it looks bloody fantastic. if guerilla can do the same job with gameplay as they did on killzone liberation (as opposed to the mediocre killzone on PS2 - but which i didn't actually mind) this should be jolly good fun. which are the new shots though? obviously the one from July was the terrible low rez bitmap shadowed one, but i can't see anything that wasn't in the trailers.

I don't usually give a shit when it comes to moaning about a certain game - whether it is in the visuals department or not - but anybody who think Killzone 2 looks rubbish or think the latest footage from the PlayStation Day is underwhelming; you are either the hardest person in the world to please or you are stuck up your own arse to whatever console you 'support'.

I thought the last Killzone was alright, just overhyped.. this looks like going the same way. No matter what it looks like it'll probably end up as a generic dull shooting game, with people saying "HUUUHHH" really loud, and a token black man. Still here's hoping.
  • Apologie #63 4 years ago

I didn't really get into KZ:Liberation either. As I say, looks the part so far, but will it play the part.

People are comparing it to COD4 (in so far as its a scripted shooter)... haven't experienced one of these to my knowledge, but I DO have COD4 on rental now, so will see how this suits me.
  • Moz #68 4 years ago

@Aloominum_man: I've rented Haze and i'm plesently surprised so far prolly give it a 6/10 myself (which in my eye is worth a play through on rental but not worth buying)
  • HyperShadow #69 4 years ago

I don't know, something looks off. Ignoring the next gen post apocolyptic grey/brown filter thats in everything these days, there's some thing amiss about the character textures. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the best I can do is say they look like action figures, like skin, clothes and metal all have the same look, like they're overly plasticky.

Oh well, maybe it'll play good?
  • Benno #70 4 years ago

  • yupyup #71 4 years ago

  • Darren #72 4 years ago

I thought the first Killzone was terrible but so far this game looks very promising, certainly it's up to scratch visually and not a million miles off that infamous E3 2005 video. Sure it may still turn out to be another middling FPS like Haze but for now I'm liking what I'm seeing, surprising given that I have so little enthusiasm left for FPSs these days, especially after playing the aforementioned Haze!

Why is everybody expecting the Helgast to live on a planet with trees and flowers and feilds etc. Their male with guns for petes sake. It's not Halo 3 with it's bright (average) graphics and dodgy bad guys. Whats with the "it looks so linear" rubbish. Bloody xbots, you go on about how great COD4 is and also GOW when in fact their linear as hell. I have a 360 but except the fact that this in the graphics department makes Halo 3 look last gen. Plus lets be honest it won't take much for this game to be better than Halo 3.

yes just like the first one was the other halo killer

It doesn't need to be a Halo killer. Halo managed suicide all by itself.

Hope it plays good. They've had enough bloody time with it.
  • dsmx #79 4 years ago

Never really understood why people keep criticising it for being grey, in the first game there was a scene from planet helgast and it it was harsh, cloud covered, poisoned atmosphere planet. How do you propose on a planet like that to put in a colourful landscape?
  • Moz #80 4 years ago

Personally loving the graphics, they're stylised rather then going for the ultra real look.
  • beastmaster #81 4 years ago

Will wait till it comes out and then perhaps buy a PS3. See what the reviews etc. are like. There's a few more good games coming out which I think will make it worth while. own a 360 but do not hate PS3. Just not enough out there to justify me getting one.
  • CannonAnBall #82 4 years ago

Another fucking PS3 related thread that is hijacked by PS3 haters. You can't get a sensible fucking comment in Sony threads these days. PS3 automatically means it must be shite these days which is a shame.

Has your fanboyism not caused you to implode yet farticus? Lord this discussion is depressing.

  • JediMasterMalik #88 4 years ago

  • ParanoidZombie #89 4 years ago

@mastermalik: KZ1's campaign mode would have been mediocre and average if only the game had had a decent autosave/checkpoint system. But since Guerilla didn't manage to do that, forcing you to play for 30+ straight minutes without having a chance to save your progression, then the game fully deserved its dreadful reputation IMO.

On the other hand, the multiplayer was mediocre and average indeed, nothing terrible, and it had bots + splitscreen, which was a welcome addition.

Even if this game turns out to be Linear, so what. So`s 90% of every shooter on the market. This game looks good, it has the eye candy, the only thing I want is a good difficultly level and decent Ai.

I couldn't give a rats ass if it was linear, it will be a decent game to pick, maybe not 10/10 like Halo ( LOL ) or GTA4 but decent.

There's a good preview from Edge here:
    http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10823&Itemid=2.

Sounds like it has potential, but the jury is still out:

In fact, perfectly effective is the phrase that seems apt to describe all of Killzone 2's features. The game takes no risks, neither in design nor tone. The explosive barrels, the crate-filled warehouse, the vision blur as damage is incurred, scripted sequences of Helghast fast-roping through roof-lights, the lights that blow out when shot at, the brightly colored wireframe boxes that show the locations of mission objectives; they're all proven pieces of FPS and 3D world design, and taken together in the context of this much-vaunted game, it's hard not to come away feeling that Killzone 2 is short on ideas that it can call its own.

  • monkie_king #95 4 years ago

Gazza_UK: but about 70% of those 2000 comments were MGS fanboys crying about it getting an 8. And a good proportion of those had signed up accounts just for the occasion o_O
  • Gazza_UK #96 4 years ago

ah your right.. everyone is crazy.. dont know why i read these threads, they always do my head in :D
  • Darren #97 4 years ago

@monkie_king - Despite what Edge said about Killzone 2's lack of originality, it never hurt Halo when it came out, which itself was just a Best Of compilation of all the best bits from FPSs up to that point. I'm not saying that Killzone 2 will be better than the Halo trilogy - if anything it won't, at best it'll be just as good - just that innovation isn't always a necessity for a good solid FPS.

  • JediMasterMalik #101 4 years ago

Sorry everyone, but a 70% average is far from "godaweful" and "terrible". It does in fact support my view that the game was average, rather than the biased view that it was terrible.

They're not Bullshots either, we've seen gameplay videos that look like this. In fact it looks even better in motion due to the post-processing effects.

I know from the reaction to this game that it's going to get panned for it's lack of originality, but for some reason it only really matters if the game isn't Halo or CoD.
  • DrDamn #102 4 years ago

    @Farticus
    "(assuming it's the same team)"

Be interesting to know - it's been a long time and there are going to be a hell of a lot more people involved this time - so there have to be plenty of new people (good or bad).

    @Darren
While a lot of Halo you could point to as generic or done before that still doesn't stop the combat itself - the meat of the FPS - being the best there had been for many. That is what Halo does to distinguish itself, not graphics, gameplay.
  • monkie_king #103 4 years ago

JMM: just shy of the coveted 71% Metacritic score for FunkMaster Flex's Digital Hitz Factory, then ;-)

It was really the burden of hype that makes people regard KZ1 as being such a big let-down, as with Haze this gen.

edit: agree with DrDamn on Halo's gameplay innovations -- recharging shield, two-weapon slots, grenades and melee mapped to buttons. That's more or less the template for all modern console shooters, and it made for much more free-flowing run-and-gun gameplay than was typical of the PC ports that characterised the pre-Halo era.
    Edited by monkie_king at 24/06/08 @ 15:26
  • Widge #104 4 years ago

The thing is, you then have to use that yardstick as the one to measure all others by... if the genre isn't advanced, but the meat is all good, then it would deserve to sit on the same plateau. If it gets knocked down for not bringing something new to the genre, then you're understandably going to get people going around with the wtf flag.
  • Darren #105 4 years ago

JediMasterMalik - "I know from the reaction to this game that it's going to get panned for it's lack of originality, but for some reason it only really matters if the game isn't Halo or CoD."

So true but since when were Halo 3 or CoD 4 considered "original"? :?

The best you can hope for from a FPS these days is solid shooting mechanics, cool weapons, some impressive A.I. and a compelling storyline and well-designed levels to keep you playing right to the end. Oh and an online mode for those of you who care about such things. Originality and innovation aren't necessarily a requirement. Even the sublime BioShock wasn't all that original but it still managed to be distinctive, atmospheric and memorable. Likewise CoD 4... less so for Halo 3 as I felt that was a little overrated personally but still a solid game overall. Haze committed the cardinal sin of having no redeeming features whatsoever, it was very bland and ordinary and it didn't help that the story and dialogue were excruiatingly poor either. Played OK though but it was instantly forgettable the moment you put the controller down.

@WongaWhats the point in making your own engine why not just use UE3 for a game like this, that's what its made for, why reinvent the wheel.

Please noooooooo most UT3 games really do look the same thanx to some very destinctive lighting and texturing effects!

These guys, DICE and Insomniac should be prasied for doing their own engines and doing such a good job of it.

As far as KZ2 goes I don't think their going for ultra realisum, it's got a really nice dark sci-fi graphic novel feel to it. Games are to a certain degree a work of art and should be judge on does it look good not does it look real. Or in few years time every game truelly wil look the same and look like real life, where's the escapisum in that??
  • HyperShadow #118 4 years ago

Comparing the graphic jump in this and the original to GoW and its sequel is a bit of a non starter seeing as Killzone is across two generations of hardware and Gears is the same hardware. So a jump in graphical quality is expected.

Besides, reguardless of the console its on, the setting and everything else you want to throw up. The look of this game is totally unappealing. Post Apocalyptic worlds is the new WW2.
  • Moz #119 4 years ago

    @Hypershadow

If you don't like the look then that's fair enough. Personally I really like it. and like WW games there are plenty of people who really like KZ style setting and will never tire of it.

And again like FPS game mechanics pretty much every style and setting has been already and there will be trends when a surtain setting is more popular then another.

I think we all need to except that other then a gradual improvement in graphics and the occational game play element that FPS games are not going to change much more. In the next gen every FPS will have the desctrucability of Bad company and GoW2. Meaning the only variouse will be setting and story and even then you be able to say "oh but that just looks like such and such" and "oh where have i heard that story before!!!!" much like the film industry, hell in films at the moment it's just comic aduptation after another retelling the same stories that have already told 10 times in comic books.

I don't care what anyone says, graphically at least, this game is looking phenominal. Whether the gameplay will match up is simply a case of wait and see, although its likely to be playable at E3, so we should get lots of reports back.
  • drumbaby #122 4 years ago

Looks grand. Can't wait for this one.
  • T4RG4 #123 4 years ago

Hmm, very drag=b if you ask me (I know you haven't).

Its just so... dull looking! It looks okay graphically in the sense of being detailed, its just a poor setting and use of colour (or lack of).

Funny reading the comments from way back at the start now. Complete ownage.

Hahahahaha what? The shots still look boring and generic as hell, like any other FPS. There's still nothing special about them. "Complete ownage", what?

This game looks way better that anything the 360 has or will have in its lifespan.Just as Gran Turismo 5 and Metal Gear Solid 4.People just dont know what they are looking to.

    No Diomedes...no it doesn't.

I do think it looks very good, though nothing stand out amazing. Smoke, lighting, shadows, detailed textures, smooth animation - this is what this gen is supposed to do and there are plenty of examples of it already. I have no idea how it will play so I'm not going to comment.

As for the issues of it not being very original, can we have some suggestions please?? I do agree, but also think it's very difficult to come up with some new settings and visual styles now.

In actual fact, for all the abuse it's getting Halo is starting to look more and more unique!

    HL 2
    XIII
    TF2
    Halo
    Gow
    MOH/COD
    Quake
    Painkiller

I think that covers most of them.

Is it me, or has the new pics (the first 4, I think) lookeworse than the previous ones?
I mean, it looks equal to that of gears, but I always thought the previous images looked better than gears. It now looks almost identical. Trust me, have a quick scan.

I think M$ fanboys or xbots or whatever is wrong.

It's the fuckin' Halo boys that spout fuckin' shite.

Just checked on two threads that cover the PS3 news items on the front page and Halo is mentioned in both.

    Fuckin' tedious I tell ya.
  • DrDamn #130 4 years ago

    @The Bodybuilder
Nah it's just you. If anything the new pics display a suspicious amount of AA. Compare picture 2 (new) to picture 10 (old). Very similar in terms of detail / textures etc but new pic is smoother.
  • FladgeMangle #131 4 years ago

It looks good, which must be a massive relief to everybody at Sony. I hope it plays better than the original.

I've only scan read the thread so correct me if I'm wrong (as if I needed to say THAT lol).

Nobody seems to have mentioned Resistance 2 yet, a game that looks better than this one and has a whole lot more promise in the playability stakes. They have giant robots too. GIANT ROBOTS!
  • mooseman721 #132 4 years ago

I think it looks great. As long as the gameplay is tight those visuals are absolutely fine. People saying that it looks rubbish need to go here

    @CannonAnBall

It's all in that Sony-biased skull of yours.
The first comment mentioning GOW or Halo3 is Britesparc...he's not an xbot.
After that, one of those 2 games were mentioned by Lucky88, evilfoxhound, Widge, muzzer77, seasidebaz, evilfoxhound (again) and finally, farticusmaximus. So where are all the xbots spouting Sony hatred while referring to GOW or H3?

...in your delusional and defensive mind, CannonAnBall :)
  • CannonAnBall #134 4 years ago

...maybe it is, maybe it isn't?

    Who's to say? :D
  • Svalbaard #135 4 years ago

Hmmm. If this and MGS4 (as has been stated in several reviews and previews) are examples of the PS3 being "pushed" graphically then I'm happy to keep hold of my very reliable and quiet 360 thank you very much. Still, at least you can go appear superior by paying £25 for a Blu-ray disk while the rest of us pay £10 for the same experience. Oh hang on... wait, isn't half of the content on the MGS4 blu-ray disk non interactive cut scenes? Make that £40 then.

Yeah, you can tell... I like my 360 thanks. I'm a FAN of it. I really like the extensive list of superb games and the fact it'll be around for a while yet despite the desperate whinnying of the Sony fraternity hoping it won't.

As Playstation users we've had a rough year, what with being robbed and deprived by our true loves and then firmly battered and shamed by the crazy usurpers.

There will be some amonst us that manifest a certain bitterness. This is that Earth thing called jealousy.

Mercifully it is all finally looking good. Great games, a genuine push for performance parity and the long overdue OS features finally appearing on the horizon. Plus rising sales and some great system exclusives.

Can we play in the same park now?

I'm actually in that camp of people that played and enjoyed the first game - it may not have been bristling with uniqueness, nor originality, indeed. However, it occupied a well thought out universe populated by a fairly interesting cast of characters - perhaps not fully realised in the first game, but I was certainly glad when I heard the announcement of the second game that there might be potential to develop some backstory or just ongoing story.

Some of the locations throughout the game were certaintly imbibed with atmosphere - sneaking around the edges of the swamp levels, and fighting crater-to-crater over some of the helghast installations was really the sort of FPS goodness which led me to replay the game using different characters. The consistency of the design and the narrative really, for me, made it a pretty immersive experience, with some of the scripted events rivalling the cleverness displayed in the CoD games.

Now, it only remains to be seen whether KZ2 has the sort of pedigree that will make it a product likely to influence me in purchasing a PS3, or whether it will be one added to the (admittedly growing) list of games I will be very pleased about picking up cheaply second hand in the future.

I hope that Killzone 2 is better than Killzone. I tried Killzone for the Playstation 2 and tried my best to enjoy it, but it was so poor that I did not finish the second mission before returning it to its owner. The technical achievement was impressive even though the art direction was somewhat drab. However, the gameplay was simply broken and not enough to pull me away from the available alternatives. The developer, Guerrilla Games (formerly Lost Boy Games) has an uninspired history: Tiny Toon Adventures: Dizzy's Candy Quest (GBC), Rhino Rumble (GBC), Black Belt Challenge (GBA), Invader (GBA), Killzone (PS2), Shellshock: Nam' 67 (PS2, XBox, PC), and Killzone: Liberation (PSP). The Playstation 3 needs Killzone 2 to be something special, especially after the underwhelming Resistence: Fall of Man and the botched Haze.

I hope that Killzone 2 is better than Killzone and that it delivers something special, but that is a hope which runs in opposition to my expectations. The screenshots presented above lead me to expect a technically proficient and very drab game (not unlike Gears of War), and the history of Guerilla Games leads me to expect a functional experience, dripping with unfulfilled potential, but ultimately encumbered by poor design. Sony have backed the wrong horse.

agparrot - "The consistency of the design and the narrative really, for me, made it a pretty immersive experience"

Ugh, really? I thought the level design in Killzone 1 was too enclosed and restrictive, and the narrative was absolute bollocks. I hated the way it focused on these irritating, argumentative soldiers, rather than the conflict at large, which was actually quite an interesting premise.

I really hope the environs in Killzone 2 are more wide open and interactive, and I hope the plot is a bit more epic for its own good.
