Jumpgate Evolution will run on anything News

MMO PC News by Oli Welsh

3 April, 2009

Codemasters Online has announced the system requirements for NetDevil's space combat MMO, Jumpgate Evolution. Turns out it will run on virtually any modern PC.

The minimum specs are an Intel 1.4GHz P4 (2GHz if using Vista), 512MB of RAM (1GB if using Vista), and a measly 64MB graphics card.

Recommended specs are a dual-core Intel Pemtium D, 2GB of RAM and a 256MB graphics card. None of which stops the game from being rather pretty, as you can see from the latest screens.

More scalability means more players, reckons Codemasters, plus the ability to play the game on a wide spectrum of laptops. Continuing to bang the accessibility drum, the publisher points out that the game will support joypad control (including the 360 controller for Windows) as well as flight-sim joysticks.

Jumpgate blends the character advancement, large-scale player-versus-player warfare and trading of MMOs with fast-paced, skill-based twitch combat straight out of that long-neglected genre, the space dogfighter.

It's due in beta before too long, and we'll have more on the game soon. In the meantime, check out the articles and media on the Jumpgate Evolution gamepage.

Ahh, the WoW approach. I can't believe it's taken nigh-on 20 years for the PC games industry to realise they might get more money if more people can run their games, rather than going on "whoever's prettiest, wins."

Means more games, for people like ME who prefer laptops to PCs and have always been stuck with sub-par gaming machines because gaming laptops were and still are prohibitively expensive.

The important question is, will it let us use a mouse like Freelancer?

The most important question is, will Freelancer 2 ever exist?

Also can't wait for this. I've had my fill of fantasy now, bored of Eve and don't really want to go so far back as the original Jumpgate or Vendetta.

The 'WoW' approach?

I'm sorry, but WoW came out in 2004. RuneScape has been going since 2001 and runs on much lower specs. WoW may be the jock, but they weren't first to the party.

I'm really looking forward to this - I just hope they can make that Summer release date (I've even seen something as early as June 2 mentioned on their forum, but that's probably too much to hope for).

I'm so glad I bought a gaming PC again a week ago - although it has meant that between Age of Conan, Sacred 2, Crysis, Dawn of War II, Fallout 3 (with mods) and The Witcher (haven't even had time to get properly started), my PS3 hasn't seen much action outside of playing video and music :p.

Second only to I-War, Freespace 1 & 2 are may favorite space fighter dog fighting based shenaigins.

Must find I-War somewhere, anyone out there who can put I-War on steam or GOG

i-War 1 and 2 were amazing. I remember the first came with a lovely chart of your ship and its technology. Newtonian physics that were easy to use but hard to master, what a shame they don't make games like that on PC anymore.

If Jumpgate or its competitor Black Prophecy come close to this greatness the world will be a better place. But when will someone make a decent single player space game? (The X games don't count as they are sloth trade simulators)
