JoWooD working on Gothic 4 News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

23 May, 2007

JoWooD has revealed that it's currently working on Gothic 4 for PC and next-generation consoles.

However, the publisher couldn't agree terms with Pluto 13 - the parent company of developer Piranha Bytes - so "the collaboration has come to an end".

Which means JoWooD is going to need a new developer. But unfortunately we couldn't get hold of the company this morning to find out who that will be, and what ramifications it will have.

The Gothic series is based around sprawling role-playing games, which so far have been limited to PC. The third and most recent instalment was a strong contender to Bethesda's Oblivion, earning itself a solid place in Eurogamer's heart - particularly our German friends, who absolutely loved it.

Head over to our Gothic 3 review for more information.

The sacking of a bug factory like Piranha Bytes might have been good news, if only Jowood itself weren't such a crap company to begin with.

Gothic 3 had so many bugs that is was barely a game sadly.

Neither do they, I reckon.

Bug factory or not, PB have made two of the best RPGs money can buy. Looking more forward to their next game than a Gothic 4 made by a different developer.

@UncleLou:

It never ceases to amaze me, how many (German) gamers are willing to put up with show-stopping bugs and crashes. There's something distinctly masochistic about that sort of attitude. (C:

I'm not German and I still think Gothic and Gothic 2 + Night of the Raven are two of the best RPG's of all time.

Same, if the game is good the bugs don't matter. Never bothered me in G2 or G3.

If the game erases my saves, it sort of matters to me.

Yes, I imagine that would be quite an annoyance. Glad that never happened to my saves.

Loved the first two, never played G3 as I'd stopped PC gaming by then.

If this new dev will do a 360 version as well, I'll be rather pleased (so long as its not bollox in the end of course, which under new management it could be).

I never had any show-stopping bugs or crashes in Gothic 1 and 2. I guess some people are just unlucky. ;)
