Japan charts: Monster Hunter 2 riding high News

PlayStation 3 PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

1 May, 2009

Capcom's first Monster Hunter game for the Wii tops the Japanese charts this week, knocking last week's leader Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky down to two.

Monster Hunter G is a Wii adaptation of Monster Hunter Freedom, but also includes a Japan-only demo for the Wii-exclusive Monster Hunter Tri. There's no date for the latter.

Killzone 2 makes a Japanese debut at three and is followed by Irem's new PSP game Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3: The Collapsing City and the Girl's Song.

There are two top 10 entries for Xbox 360 this week: Cave's gothic horror shoot-'em-up Death Smiles at six and Tom Clancy's HAWX at 10.

Sony's PS3 leads console hardware sales for a ninth week, but numbers fall in the aftermath of the Final Fantasy XIII demo release. One clever NeoGAF member has worked out that if PS3 and Wii figures remain the same, then Sony's console catches Nintendo's by 9th March, 2028.

For the first 16 weeks of 2009, only Sony's and Microsoft's flagship consoles have gained sales momentum week-over-week; the former is up 23 per cent and the latter up a massive 242 per cent.

Wii sales are down 64 per cent, PS2 sales down 52 per cent and PSP sales down 41 per cent. DS sales are down just 2.7 per cent week-over-week.

Japanese hardware and software sales for the week ending 26th April follow, courtesy of Media Create. Thanks, NeoGAF.

Japanese hardware sales:

  1. DS - 43,869
  2. PSP - 41,187
  3. PS3 - 23,351
  4. Wii - 18,439
  5. Xbox 360 - 7,016
  6. PS2 - 4,524

"Death Smiles"

Hey, if I got to wander around all day in a robe, carrying a scythe and having his kind of job security I reckon I'd be pretty happy!

Would be better than being a developer anyway..

DeathSmiles is a new bullet hell shmup. A good one, too.

Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3 is, of course, the third game in the brilliant (but under-appreciated) 'SOS: The Final Escape' series.

Huzzah!

@evilfoxhound It might be in part because the Helghast are inspired cough* ripped* from a bunch of Japanese films, two of which were directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) while the third is an animated film called Jin Roh and is available on DVD in the UK.

Such a waste of a Mhunter game, putting it on the Wii. Put the ports on the PSP and put the sequels on the proper consoles ffs.

@evilfoxhound Um I did say in part, the other part being how more western style games appear to be beginning to make some headway in Japan.

Wow, Killzone 2 at No.3. Given the Japanese don't generally go for FPS, that's impressive work by Sony.

Hopefully they're on such a roll they'll make an English version of Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3 happenprettyprettypleaseSony

It's about time Japanese charts stopped being dominated by an undeserving Nintendo!

According to Joystia - PS3 sales are down compared to last minth, while Wii sales are up link.
So maybe the undeserving Nintendo are about to start dominating again?
