Jackal Hunt goes live

Far Cry 2 turn-based web-game.

UPDATE 10th October: As you may already have spotted, Jackal Hunt has gone live and you can access it at www.jackalhunt.com. Check it out and you can win some great prizes as detailed below!

ORIGINAL STORY: Ubisoft and Eurogamer are happy and half-buried in sand to announce that Jackal Hunt, a special Far Cry 2 web-game, is set to launch tomorrow, 9th October.

Presented in association with our good selves, Jackal Hunt is a turn-based multiplayer game and competition in which players have to try and track down a specific player and bump him off before another, unidentified player takes them out instead.

The game will show you the location of your target, but not the person tracking you. Eek! However, you do get to see the person tracking them, allowing you to try and triangulate to some extent. The idea is to set as high a score as possible by killing enemies, collecting pickups and surviving for as long as possible.

If you're good enough to rise to the rank of Jackal and put a score on a leaderboard, you could win one of four gaming PCs, ten XFX graphics cards, a PlayStation 3, an Xbox 360, a Philips amBX ambient gaming peripheral system, or loads of Far Cry 2 merchandise.

Check out our Jackal Hunt screenshot gallery to try and figure it out in advance.

You can also check out our Far Cry 2 gamepages (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC) for the latest previews and videos, and look out for our review of the game soon - ahead of its 24th October release on all three formats.

Then check back here tomorrow and we'll direct you to Jackal Hunt.

    Sounds interesting.

Might dedicate the rest of the week to trying to top the leaderboard.

Ubisoft and Eurogamer mingling ..... should we expect a 9/10 for FarCry then ?
  • Eraysor #6 3 years ago

  • LockeTribal #7 3 years ago

So I get to the bit where I select an Avatar, then click Confirm.... and F all happens?

I know it's a bit slow (12 hour turns is a bit much), but I know I've got my target next turn, and I'm fairly sure the guy hunting me went the wrong way. We shall see in just over 4 hours, but I think I'm in with a chance. Either that or the guy hunting the guy hunting me (that I can see) is going the wrong way and I'm dead.

It's a nice, if limited, game so far.
  • mexalen #12 3 years ago

Well, my target just stayed out of reach if only for an inch ...damn. I hope your luck runs out this round, whoever you are ;)
  • MoFo #13 3 years ago

Dunno what's going on for me. Made my first turn last night and checked in this morning to find that I hadn't actually moved. And yes a turn had passed since I'd made my move. Also really hating the flashing map when you go to select where to move to.
  • Zawath #14 3 years ago

I got to be the Jackal and it's actually a big disadvantage because you can't kill anything, so you don't get many points.
  • MoFo #15 3 years ago

I give up with this rubbish game. I set up two accounts, played on 3 different computers on 3 different browsers and my guys never move. I select where I want him to go. It says "Are you sure?" I say "Yes". Then the next round he's not moved! I can't see anything that I could've done wrong. I'm dissapointed Eurogamer have associated themselves with this cack. Rant over.
  • agparrot #16 3 years ago

I am also having trouble because my Jackal-potente will not move.

I'm wondering if it is because his starting position might be a mountain, and yet of course you start with no mountain-moving perks.

Which would be stupid, right? Really, really stupid?

Want to play, but don't want to register.
    Too bad.
  • DFawkes #18 3 years ago

Pity it seems to be a bit buggy for some people.

I think some people registered then forgot to check back obsessively like I do. I know the guy chasing the guy hunting me hasn't been active for 48 hours, which would make it harder to gauge where the person hunting me is if I didn't have the NVG upgrade.

Got my first kill though, and I think I've cornered my second. I like this game (mostly because it's working for me), and no longer feel it's too slow at 12 hours a tick. I check in the morning, once when I get in from work, and that's all it takes.
  • LockeTribal #19 3 years ago

I don't get it. Are you supposed to try and kill the guy with the target on them?
  • DFawkes #20 3 years ago

You have to move within the green circle on your turn to make your red circle encompass your target, the one with the red crosshair on him. The hard part is figuring out which way they'll go next turn, and making sure you go the same way.

The problem is, there's also someone hunting you. You can't see them (unless you have the Night Vision Goggles), but you can see the person hunting the parson hunting you. So if, for example, they move towards you, it's likely the person hunting you did too, so it's time to evade rather than play aggressively. I'm still not 100% I've got the balance of hunting/evading right, but I've not died yet, and I'm fairly sure my hunter isn't even playing so I just have to not move into his zone.

That, rereading it, was not a good explanation, but there are better ones in game.
  • LockeTribal #21 3 years ago

Actually that helps a lot. Much clearer than the in-game rules.

    Cheers ;)
  • DFawkes #22 3 years ago

Really? I thought it was gibberish.

Wouldn't say cheers anyway, inevitably one of us may have to take the other out. If you take me out, I'll feel rather silly about trying to help. Maybe my advice should've been "Stay perfectly still! Never move!" but it's too late now.
  • agparrot #23 3 years ago

Have to agree with Locke that DFawkes explanation is a better one than the slightly spread out rules of the Jackal site.

My little man is definitely stood atop a brownish looking hill - this is the place where he started the game.

When I click a target to run towards, I get the little running-with-a-knife animation, but at turnover time.... nothing has changed.

    Perhaps it is me.
  • DFawkes #24 3 years ago

Really does sound like you're stuck, and if the person hunting you doesn't bother playing, you're screwed.

Only 1 minute until next turn :)
  • LockeTribal #25 3 years ago

Wahey, just killed my 1st target :D

Thanks DFawkes, hope it wasn't you :)
  • DFawkes #26 3 years ago

Nope, I'm fine. Though using my NVG I just moved right at my hunter, and if he doesn't move I'm official shot. If he does move to where I was going, like I think he did (I'm sure I've been in this spot before so he must be active) I can whip out my Sniper Rifle and take out my target next shot - Mikey_PL, if that's anyone here, is toast!
  • LockeTribal #27 3 years ago

  • MoFo #28 3 years ago

agparrot no it's not just you. The same thing happens for me. At least I know it's not just me now. The weird thing was, no one I could see was moving either. Each turn that passed we were all in the exact same place as the last turn. Wonder if I can sue? I mean I might have won an uber gaming rig from this game if it had actually worked!
  • KingOfMyCastle #29 3 years ago

No luck for me either, on Firefox, Chrome and Opera. When I click to confirm my avatar nothing happens, shame.

Was almost thinking of buying this game but being an extremist consumer I might hold off now.

Listen mate, I can't talk now - gotta go to the shops with me mum. I'll give you a buzz later...
