The future of the handheld RPGs seems to be shifting towards the PSP.

Although no European launch has been officially announced it's highly likely it will hit Europe early next year to tie in with the forthcoming PS2 sequel.

.... which is also unconfirmed for Europe, no?

MrT: I'm just trying to beat the hot air vents that are bound to show up in the thread.

However, since we're all fans of the PSP and RPGs here I feel bound to make EVERYONE excited about this game : Jeanne d'Arc

Coz I surely am.

Worth a mention is that this is NOT a "save when you want to" game. Some save points are up to an hour apart so keep in mind this is a more suitable "when at home game" than a "30 minutes on the train" game ;)

Suspend the PSP! One amazing feature that they should mimic on the home consoles as well.

...so this is yet another "port it to a handheld with little thought for handheld gameplay" job then?

Apparently it takes an unforgivable amount of time to load up the ingame menu. I don't think I could bare the repetition and that additional frustration.

Yup other site reviews have said that little attention has been paid to making it "portable" which is a shame :(

Still fine for home play tho :)

Great review, well written. If I didn't have my copy of the game already I'd have to order one now.

The PSP could be a a damn fine games machine if they didn't use those darn discs. Or if you could have a sanctioned and official way to transfer a game to the memory stick so you can play it without a load break every few seconds.

I guess I'll still buy, like I did with the PS FFs, and I think I'll hate it just like I did back then. *sigh*

Why bother releasing this as a full price UMD game, when Sony claim they're going to be releasing thousands of PSOne games emulated for the PSP anyway? Can't this be emulated or something?

Hence the beefed up CG scenes, that are pretty awesome.
It's a good game, the Viking Mythos is a little askew (Vanir were hardly the bad guys - just another clan of Gods that allied with the Aesir against the Giants) but then Japanese are never perfect at such things.
Looking forward to this and the PS2 sequel.

They are beautiful but I personally don't think they sit well with the oldish looking graphics or maybe I'm too much of an anime whore. :)

also, on top of the new beefed up CG sceens already mentioned, i believe the game has been optimised for the widescreen display (which i doubt they will do with the PS1 emulated games).

Its undoubtedly a good game, but the style didn't sit well with me. It gave the impression of a dying world far too well, well enough for me not to want to spend very long in it each time I play. Also - after their initial story, the perma-silence of those fighting alongside you is kind of annoying to my mind. It's like they took all the character development and stuck it in a big chunk, and then you spend most of the game never interacting with them.

Like I said, a good game - one of my friends' all-time favourite, in fact - but it really isn't for everyone.

One for the bargain bin, methinks (and that shouldn't take too long, I hope - it's a PSP RPG, after all...)

A rare RPG that's highly replayable thanks to the time limit and all the character stories, more then you could see in any one go.

I'm sure I would have enjoyed it, had the game not started with a barely interactive series of events that lasted so long I ended up quitting. Even Xenosaga wasn't that bad!

If it's any consolation Madmirko, I bought the FF re-releases on the ps1 and only finished one of them because of the slow loading times. While I'm not going to say the menu loading in valkyrie profile isn't noticeable I'm about half way through the game at the moment and I can't say it's bothered me too much so far, possibly because I'm enjoing the game so much.

That's a poor excuse, really. You can't do anything else with your PSP until you find a save point. :)

Well, then you really shouldn't be playing RPGs if you just want a 'quick fix' game. The sleep function has done me pretty well through a few RPGs so far(Several of which were on the Snes/MD emulators, and had huge save point gaps in them) and I've had few complaints thus far :)

Anyway, really looking forward to getting stuck into Lenneth when I can, good to hear it's worth it.
