Hmm, 10 hours of play time. Sound a bit too short. I think I'll wait and see what others say about the difficulty.

More Riddick related stuff? This is almost getting as scary as Tom's MGS3 obsession. ;)

On an more serious note, I can't say I'm looking forward to the direction CG is traveling in these days. Everything has that 'shiny' look to it, shader overload. Halo, the upcoming Dooooom, and this. Just looks so plastic and it seems everyone wants to emulate it. Gah!

10 hours! that's crap.. ICO got criticised for offering the same amount of gameplay. Ninja Gaiden got the same score as this yet offers loads more gameplay and is much more worthy of £40.

Yeah, the short game thing is a flawed argument, Halo and Half Life didn't take me much more than 12 hours of gaming time to finish, yet you don't hear people banging on about them being too short.

In your opinion, but not everyone thinks NG was the best thing since sliced bread.

Have you played Riddick yet? Criticising Starbreeze for only providing 10 hours of "often masterful, rarely boring, and beautifully presented" gameplay is just daft. Read Starbreeze's reasons for keeping it relatively short (in some peoples opinion), and try to remember all the action games you've played that took you much longer than 10 hours to complete but which utilised cheap gameplay tricks, backtracking and repetetive levels to artificially squeeze those extra hours out of it, when it could have been a shorter but more cohesive and gripping piece of entertainment.

10 hours is fine as long as you have a great ten hours. See the afore-mentioned Ico, for example. If only three of those ten hours are fun then you can start complaining.

And there's always replay-value, especially in an 'action' game.

If you think 10 hours of play, possibly less, is worth £40 go ahead and buy it.. at least with Half Life and Halo the multiplayer adds greatly to the overall package. Yes i have played Riddick and IMHO it isn't a patch on Halo or Half Life. I agree that Ninja Gaiden isn't to everyone's taste in fact it caused me no end of frustration but what it did provide me was about 30 hours of gameplay, and the desire to play through it again to collect the Scarabs i missed, well worth £40 to me.

10 hours is plentiful IMO. I don´t have the luxury of spending whole days playing games and I´m sure I´m not the only one with kids and a job. It will be nice to complete a game for a change.

Ico lasts less than five hours, Riddick has probably lasted me over 10 hours now playing on hard because people were complaining about the playtime. It really depends how careful you are finding all the cig packets for extras and whether you like playing around with the ragdolls and stuff. You can do some amusing things trapping bodies around the edges of walls stretching them until they're veeery thin! When they pop back into shape sometimes they're deformed!

Riddick's probably more linear than it fools you into thinking but how much you help other inmates in a couple of parts is certainly up to you.

I must agree. I played a couple of games longer that that (NWN, Halo, KOTOR and NG) but most games cause burn-out after 10-15 hours. I have no problem with a 10 hour game if it blows me away. PoP, Zelda:WW and BG&E are 10 hour games as well and great experiences.

Yup like i said, just my opinion.. for my hard earned 40 sheets i want value for money, in my opinon Riddick doesn't offer that. Took me a while to get to grips with Ninja Gaiden but after that i really enjoyed the game and though very challenging at times i enjoyed it, finished it over a few weeks of playing whenever i had spare time.

Is it worth buying an XBox to play Riddick, certainly not but it is worth getting one to play Riddick, Halo, Top Spin, Ninja Gaiden, Rallisport2, Mechassault, PGR2, Full Spectrum Warrior, Crimson Skies.. yes.

How many Chronicles of Riddick features are their going to be on Eurogamer....has there been a backhander or something?

They went to Sweden just to meet the Starbreeze lot, so it's understandable they're going to want to make the most of the results.

Eurogamer bought for huge sums of money? Nah... last time I heard it was £2 and a packet of Jaffa cakes... ;)

I think £40 for 10 hours of entertainment isn't too bad at all, works out at £4 per hour. Going down the pub I spend more money than that.

Anyone who spends 40 quid on a game should be given a bit of a kick, there's no reason to spend that much on new games these days.

August 13th is a long bloody wait for a game developed in Europe to actually go on sale there... :-(

40 quid is about US $70 at current exchange rates, so given that full-price American games only cost US $50, anyone who pays 40 quid is being ripped off nastily.

Why this issue on length vs. enjoyment? A few of us commented on the disgraceful length of Van Helsing - 3 hours - but it was probably combined with the fact that it was meant to be rubbish. But would you rather play 10 excellent hours, or try and survive 30 exceedingly dull hours? PoP:SoT and BG&E are examples of short games that are still enjoyable because they're close to being works of art.

Incidentally, I played PoP a few days ago for the first time since finishing Ninja Gaiden. NG has loads going for it in comparison - a better combat system and greater complexity - but PoP is so utterly gorgeous, I'm happy for it to be short.

The comment from P:Laz says it all really.. and people wonder why quality games don't sell very well. MS have created the most easily hackable console ever, it's a pirates wet dream and it's scary just how many chipped XBox's there are.

If only! No, the truth is it's just a happy coincidence - they took us out to see Starbreeze last week, and we got our hands on review code at around the same time. Since we liked it so much, we figured it made sense to give it a fair amount of attention. We'd love to do this with every game really...

I bought Riddick last weekend (I live in Canada) and beat it in a single 9 hour sitting. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and would agree with the 9/10 score.

I wasn't too concerned about replaying it, so I sold it to someone for $10 less than I paid for it. That's probably one less sale for VU and Starbreeze, but I'm a happy consumer.
