Prey coming to iPhone News

iPhone News by Robert Purchese

11 February, 2009

3D Realms' sci-fi shooter Prey is coming to iPhone in the next few weeks.

Developer MachineWorks Northwest will handle the conversion, according to IGN, and has made a nifty on-screen thumb-control system to help steer hero Tommy around. These sensor bars, incidentally, can be moved around the screen to fit individual preference.

Despite being squashed from Xbox 360 and PC, Prey on iPhone will retain many of the feature gameplay mechanics: wall-walking, puzzles and lots of satisfying organic weaponry.

The visuals are said to be rather sumptuous, too, with alien ships sporting the right atmospheric touches: bulging veins, aliens, and, er, more aliens.

Prey finally launched on PC and Xbox 360 back in 2006 after nearly a decade in development in one form or another. The story follows Cherokee Tommy onto an alien spaceship in search of his abducted girlfriend and grandfather.

He soon faces all sorts of unfriendly opposition, but has a trick up his sleeve: his Cherokee background allows his spirit to wander forth from his body and roam freely - a mechanic used often to solve puzzles.

A sequel to Prey has been announced, and 3D Realms big shot Scott Miller has been bullish about the sort of technology that will be on display.

Head over to our Xbox 360 Prey review for an idea of what to expect.

I loved Prey single-player, if this turns out to be good I might finally have to get an iPhone. This gaming lark is an expensive business.

Now could EG start acknowledging the existence of the n-gage platfrom now, even just one article to say "Mostly Shit"? There's adverts for it on this very page as I type, FFS!

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of FPS on the ol' iPhone. I think people are over-reaching trying to do that. Craft a game that works with the interface, don't try and force round blocks through square holes, people!

Of course, it may turn out to be amazing, but I doubt it...

Oh dear, Prey? Why?
It could have been a contender but it was just generic FPS #15 with some sticky walls. It should have been sooo much better and i can't see it being much cop on the iPhone either.

a really really dumb idea...
ive seen a screenie of this in dev and it looks as if your finger will be obscuring most of the action..
strip away the graphics, screen size, feeback, responsiveness and your left with, ...well whats the point, really?

I agree that the fps genre isn't really suited well to the iPhone, but I'm always open to giving each game a chance. Someone might come up with a good control scheme for it, though I think it unlikely.

Prey was actually very fun, but Portal completely ruined one of its main selling points.

This would be so much better on 800*400px screen phones. :p

fps + iPhone = fail

---

have you checked out the stuff being done with 'Unity 3D'?
I think you'd be quite surprised at what can already be done with existing tech.
It's a great tool for indie development.
The games are worth checking out tbh - as long as the price point is in the under-a-fiver mark ofc.

I loved Prey - one of my favourite games. Not sure how well it will work on the iPhone though.

I've got an n-Gage enabled phone and I don't even take any notice of it. In fact I tried out one game and deleted the entire application from the memory card. It's just never going to take off, and Nokia should stick to what they're good at - making excellent phones and then only allowing it to live up to 90% of their potential.

@actionfitz

I will check that out if i get time later.

But I've tried a fps on my iPhone before (can't remember name now) and imho the touchscreen alone is no-where near good enough for this type of game.

I have been looking into getting one of these (http://icontrolpad.com/) but it's taking its sweet time being released.
