International Cricket 2010 announced

Out summer on PS3, 360. How's that?

Codemasters has announced International Cricket 2010 for release this summer on PS3 and Xbox 360.

The aim [surely the wicket? -Ed] is to duplicate the UK chart-topping performance given by Ashes Cricket 2009 last summer.

But Transmission Games isn't at the crease for this instalment. Instead, newly formed Australian studio Trickstar Games will bat this out, having hired various veterans from Ashes Cricket 2009 and the Brian Lara series.

Top of the new-feature list is Action Cam, which captures the "on-pitch drama, intensity and excitement of fiercely competitive international cricket". Yes, if you say so. And this will be in addition to normal camera angles.

Another stand-out new feature will be full analogue-stick batting control dubbed Power Stick. This should measure both the speed and direction of your thumb twiddles and faithfully translate that to the game.

Playable in International Cricket 2010 will be 16 nations, including the authentic English, Welsh and Australian squads, because those are the three countries whose cricket organisations backed the game. And if that doesn't suit you, there's a player editor and squad editor to tinker with.

Game modes have been bolstered with new instant tournaments, and there'll be online multiplayer with tea breaks, probably.

My heart tells me this will be good... my brain tells me otherwise...

Have to agree with Beeper85, would really love a good cricket game but I'm not even sure its possible...

    How's that?

    NOT OUT!!

    Not until Summer anyway.

Last years effort was really poor, terrible animations and quite frankly a shit game.. the worse part of the whole game was lack of sound when you 'knicked' a ball to slip or wicky, to me an abhorrent omission.
  • jonsaan #5 2 years ago

Cool. But I wish someone else would have a go. Codies can't get a way from the frankly ridiculous bowling circle that tells you where the ball is going to pitch before you play a shot. It really couldn't be anything less like real cricket if it tried. Revamp required. This system has its roots in the 8 bit era.

Oh and looking at the screenchots. It's the usual story. Zero gameplay shots in there. This means the exact same game with a few minor tweaks.

Oh Brian Lara Cricket, how my heart pines for thee...

In other news anyone expecting this to be brilliant? Especially with Move/Natal support???

    Do I hear a "no"?
  • jonsaan #7 2 years ago

This game basically is Brian Lara's cricket in a fur coat. That was shit too. Fun shit for a while but ultimately shitty all the same.

All these people need to do is have a go on Stick cricket and develop that idea some more.

Wales don't have a cricket team as far as I'm aware, as it's jointly the England and Wales cricket board. Have I missed something?

Can we expect a review or are you guys gonna not bother like Ashes?
  • Nuada #10 2 years ago

    Yay! Poofters-Rounders!!!

Such an exciting and interesting game....
  • Evolution #11 2 years ago

    @matrim83

Yeah, bit of a joke considering they did all that preview work on the series and then didn't even publish any reviews of the games.
  • jonsaan #12 2 years ago

Here is your Ashes review 5/10. SO average it hurts. Must try harder.

Another minority spot game coming out. But still no next gen rugby, come on EA fingers crossed for Rugby 2011.

Last year's Ashes game, while occasionally hinting at greatness, was mostly awful. The AI playing Test matches like they were 20/20 matches was perhaps the worst culprit. But at the other end of the scale, the AI batsmen hardly ever scored anything at all in Brian Lara 2005.

Transmission certainly made plenty of mistakes for Trickstar to learn from.
  • superdelphinus #15 2 years ago

Less time on cameras, more on the actual gameplay this time please!
  • afray #16 2 years ago

@ryn.x there /is/ a wales team, but it counts as a minor counties side rather than an international side, so crickets can play for both wales and "england" (as you said, selected for by the england and wales cricket board).
  • CasperCCC #17 2 years ago

I hardly played Ashes cricket against the AI. But I still play it against mates every so often. Goes well with a few beers and a lot of piss-taking.
  • ryn.x #18 2 years ago

@afray Cheers, consider me educated on the matter :)
  • y2rich #19 2 years ago

It won't be anywhere near as good as BLC99

Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world unless you count 2-3 billion people as a minority ;)

    1) Football: 3.3-3.5 billion fans (Europe, Africa, Asia, Americas, etc.)
    2) Cricket: 2-3 billion fans (India, UK, Pakistan, Asia, Australia, etc.)

However that said i doesnt translate into a gripping video game, maybe 20-20 game?
  • man.the.king #21 2 years ago

Will this be coming out in the US? I'm originally from India, and would like to have at least one good Cricket-based game.

Licensed games have their place in the world, but the disparity between the number of gamers who are also cricket fans is big; than say the overlap between gamers and football fans.

Cricket game developers really need to go back to basics (ie not a cricket sim) and develop a Wii Sports Golf styled game, with purposeful training drills. Not focusing on producing quantity, just produce mini game quality, so that even people like me, who only watch cricket once in a blue-moon with the father in-law might buy it and get a better appreciation of the game of cricket.

Cartoon (toon shaded Windwaker graphics) or Valkyria chronicles (painterly effect graphics) are an ideal style for a cricket game. Even the British Meat adverts with Beefy and Lamby use cartoon cgi replacements for wider appreciation.

By starting back at the beginning, maybe a 3rd version of a cricket game like this, might have all the sim bits back in place, but be far more enjoyable and be a faithful reproduction of cricket.
