Insomniac hints at new PS3 exclusive News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

11 March, 2009

Insomniac Games is currently working on an unannounced PlayStation 3-exclusive game, the developer quietly noted yesterday.

The announcement came at the tail end of a press release celebrating the fact that the Employer's Group has ranked the studio as the fifth best place to work in California.

"Insomniac Games is currently developing an unannounced title, exclusively for PS3," according to a footnote.

Traditionally a Sony stalwart, Insomniac has already shipped two Resistance games and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction for PS3, along with the downloadable expandalone platformer, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty.

"Last year was an especially historic time for Insomniac in that we launched two successful games in one year while also laying the groundwork for our new North Carolina studio," said CEO Ted Price.

"It's therefore especially gratifying to earn such praise for our work culture considering the volume of activity and change we experienced. When we factor in the multitude of innovative companies populating the state this honour becomes even more humbling and special."

Apparently the company also plans to take employees and their "significant others" on "an all-expenses paid cruise to the Bahamas" to celebrate the firm's 15th anniversary.

Eurogamer's going to be ten years old in September. Just saying.

Do these guys do Jak & Daxter? If so, i'm hoping it's that! If these guys didn't do Jak & Daxter..i still hope a PS3 version is announced, but without the GTA style, i want one like the first game!

Naughty Dog were behind the Jak & Daxter series, and Iagree about you over the direction the series took, sequels were cynical attempts to make it trendy GTA style, imo undid all the hard work they did with the original, as first looks suggest to me they are doing with Uncharted, more rather than less combat taking it further in the wrong direction.

Insomniac - 15 years old, didn't know will have to look up what they worked on pre Ratchet...

the first game they show on their site is Disruptor release 1996 on the PS1 which was followed by the PS1 Spyro games.

Cheers Moz, didn't know they worked on the original Spyro titles, played the first briefly a wee lad way back. Resistance makes more sense in their catalogue having read a little about Disruptor just now, would make for an interesting game to put up on the PSN store for PSP.

There was actually a rumour that they'd go multiplatform after R2, but that was clearly BS. They're not a 1st party dev though (unlike Naughty Dog) so it's not impossible.

(I can't remember but I think I'm right in saying that...) Insomniac made Twisted Metal for the PS2? If so, I hope it is a PS3 version!

I just hope it's not another FPS. I appreciate their work, but not if it's an FPS.

So, is EG sending its employees on an all-expenses paid trip to the Canaries?

@ Anotherrobharvey

Nope, Insomniac never made a Twisted Metal. The only games they've worked on are Disruptor, Spyro, Ratchet and Resistance.

And to those wondering about Disruptor - it's rubbish. I bought it a couple of year back, and it's just a substandard FPS from the time when the genre was getting big. However, I wouldn't mind them doing a remake, although I s'pose they've got the whole FPS angle covered with Resistance.

Anyway, I really like Insomniac, it's good to see them doing so well. It'd be nice if they took a bit of time out from Ratchet and gave us new platformer sans guns. Guns have ruined platformers. Or, failing that, Daxter & Clank Karting. However, Naughty Dog are probably the more appropriate choice for this, given how superb CTR is.

Vertical Stand, it could be argued that by adding stealth to the play mechanics Naughty Dog aren't expanding on the combat for Uncharted's sequel. I'm more disappointed the dev has done away with elena's realistic female attributes in favour of a more hollywood/male fantasy inspired accompanying protagonist.

Absolutely have to disagree. This, Exhumed and DOOM on PS1 were my fave fps games of the time. You can't judge it in today's market (a couple of years ago is too recent) as both DOOM and Exhumed are nigh on unplayable for any great length of time bar a sudden nostalgic craving.

After the first two levels the game really took off, and the psychic powers were a really great secondary weapon. I remember the dream sequence, inside the hero's own mind...trippy as fuck. The cut scenes were cheesey, but the game itself rocked. Great gfx too -- one of the best teleport-warp effects ever!
