Infinity Ward talks Modern Warfare 2 News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

6 February, 2009

Infinity Ward community chief Robert Bowling has let slip that a Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare sequel is in development.

Speaking on his blog, Bowling Twittered that voice-overs for "Modern Warfare 2" have already been recorded.

"Reviewing some radio-chatter VO we just finished recording for Modern Warfare 2 today. 'Cujo Two-One this is Vulture, solid copy on all,'" said Bowling.

That's the first we've heard of a Modern Warfare sequel, despite Activision quite openly planning more instalments in the Call of Duty franchise.

This fits with the alternating Call of Duty development cycle between Infinity Ward and Treyarch, too - the latter having delivered Call of Duty: World at War last year.

We've asked Activision for clarification, but we don't expect to hear more for a while.

There's no other information at the moment, but we'd be surprised to see a Christmas period without a Call of Duty game.

We knew about Modern Warfare 2 ages ago. Though the fact they're so far in development is a nice surprise.

i hate this leapfrogging a franchise approach. do we really need to suffer through the bullshit treyarch games every other year? at least we're getting a good one in 2009

Nice link Deagle. I could accept that Rob claimed it's the first EG had heard of Modern Warfare 2, but an article on this very site reported that on the 4th of December. Another poor show from EG.

Makes me happy though, I liked COD4. I do prefer the setting, but also I find Infinity Ward have a better feel for map design - not that I've got anything against Treyarchs stuff, it's good too. IW just refine things better.

Lets just hope its not the fucking dross that CoD4 and WaW were. If I needed fucking perks to shoot people in the head, i'd stick to playing Viva Pinata.

The CoD games are on 2 year dev cycles aren't they? Hence it's 'so far along'. Treyarch's next is probably in its infancy.

Shit, I forgot that one. This is NOT news, indeed.

Though I hear they might be making a game based on popular movie series "Bloodrayne" soon, though they'll ruin it by changing the story and making it Vampires vs Nazis. If it'd been the other way round and the Director forgot to follow the core Vampire vs Nazi, that be criminal.

Ah Fab4, my fellow perk hater. For all the flak throw at CoD3, it had a damn good multiplayer element. All the shit perks (juggernaut and martyrdom in particular) spoiled CoD4 MP for me, and I think we all know what silliness ruined Woof At War ;)

I still play CoD3. I was in the beta for WaW and that was enough to convince me not to buy it. The first CoD I havent bought. Fucking aperture sights on a Thompson...give me a fucking break.

Not to mention the Germans (using American guns) fighting the Russians (using Japanese guns)... and what's this? Real footage of people being executed, juxtaposed with Nazi Zombies?

COD:MW was slick, good looking but christ the AI was irritating, especially on veteran. Respawning endless enemies meant the only option was to shoot a couple, smoke, run, hide in a corner and hope your teamies come and help. Online I thought the maps were poor too, way to many one-way entrances and too much opportunity to camp. That's the thing with COD, always loved the campaign but not a fan of the online, the perks may have been addictive to regular players but they are irritating as hell to the more casual player.

Hell yeah. CoD:MW campain was freakin sweet. Can't wait for this shit. I remember when finished for the first time also the ministage after the ending titles all the sadness and dissapointment of a great game finished and nothing else that I wanted to play right after... was so sad :p

The perks were just annoying, period. Everyone had Juggernaut so you ended up having to shoot an entire clip into people... only to then discover they also had Martyrdom, you couldn't get out of the room quick enough and they got a cheap kill.

The secret to beating the singleplayer was just to rush through... as soon as you hit the next invisible checkpoint suddenly your squadmates would gain enough initiative to push forward too, and you'd find yourself in the next section. Seriously, I was stuck in the TV station bit for hours - they just kept coming! But then I just ignore the enemies and ran like hell for the door... suddenly, my squad ran up next to me, unlocked the door and we continued to the next section.

The final mini-mission... getting that on Veteran is probably the hardest gaming challenge I've had in the last five years.

The alternating releases means both dev houses have time to make their titles better than they'd be if either one of them were charged with delivering a "AAA title" each holiday season.

As for "contemporary war" vs. "WWII again!" - it probably isn't fair to blame Treyarch. I'm fairly certain I've read that Infinity Ward's contract with Activision/CoD gives them exclusive rights to "wars" from the Korean conflict onward.

That leaves Treyarch with what, exactly? WWII.

Though an American revolution game might be interesting. Fire one shot, then either spend a couple minutes reloading or, more likely, charge and hope for the best :)

There is an American Revolution mod for, I think, one of the BF games. And yes, you had to pick your shots carefully.

In the world of NTSC there's an American Civil War FPS by the History Channel, which features all the fun of slow firing, inaccurate rifles.

Battlefield 1952 would be nice...

Skooch and Metalangel pretty much summed up the problems which I have had since the first of the COD game. They just slowly, but surely ruined every sense of immersion and joy in the game for me, apart from the fact, that I prefer more open world FPS's since Operation Flashpoint and it's sequels on. The last COD I played was 4, because I hoped, that with time setting at least some of the game mechanics changed, but was very disappointed. Behind the superb graphics and modern weapons there was the same linear and stupid surreal experience, where you encounter enemy maternity hospital windows or doors, from which they run endless enemy soldiers with no injury model, taking incredible amounts of machine gun fire. Some of this superhuman enemy strength continues in other titles, more recently in Far cry 2 for example.
Flashpoint was and is for me still unsurpassed FPS, and with a few more save points per mission would be even better.
I understand though, that such type of realism in FPS's is tedious and boring for some, (maybe most of you) but some compromise in this direction would be nice in modern shooters, maybe as a option in difficulty settings.
I at least like my enemies to be seriously incapacitated and shocked from just one bullet wound, and am prepared to endure the same in my FPS's.
