inFamous movie on the way News

PlayStation 3 News by Ellie Gibson

30 July, 2009

Sony Pictures has signed a seven-figure deal to bring inFamous to the big screen.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a bloke called Sheldon Turner is set to write the script. He previously penned The Longest Yard and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and is working on X-Men Oranges: Magneto.

Avi and Ari Arad have signed up to produce the movie. Their previous credits include The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. They're also producing the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune film announced last month.

inFamous, for those who aren't familiar, follows the adventures of a bloke called Cole who can make lightning come out of his hands like in Star Wars. It scored a highly respectable 7/10 on Eurogamer.

"What excited me most about the game was it was the first of which I've come across that had a big idea and a character arc," said Turner.

"It is, I believe, the future of gaming. The game, while big and fun, is at its core a love ballad to the underachiever, which is what our hero, Cole McGrath, is."

A release date for the film, announced there has been not.

Are game->movie conversions always as bad as movie->game conversions?

Yes, Infamous is the future of gaming and game-based movies are the future of film.

I genuinely loved inFamous. It's definitely my favourite game on PS3 since Uncharted and it's also the game I've most thoroughly "completed" in a long while.

I have absolutely zero interest in this film though. What is it with the film industry these days? Are they completely out of new ideas? Everything recently seems to be either a game or comic adaptation and it's getting really boring. I don't think it's an accident that my favourite films of recent times have all been written *as* films (The Fountain, to name one).

There are so many video game film adaptions in development. Half Life, Deus Ex, Metal Gear Solid, Mass Effect, Broken Sword etc. Some of them are bound to be huge.

@jstar ...Or is this further proof that you have poor taste in games?

There is a lot of this sort of thing happening recently. I reckon this would make a great movie conversion... certainly better than MGS would translate to the big screen. As iconic as the likes of MGS and Halo are on the consoles, I just don't think they'd have the sparkle in film.

Yes, this would make for a perfect generic action superhero film. Even Prototype by Michael Bay would be a better film.

@erp

There are A LOT of game or comic adaptation films coming out because they pretty much know they will fill seats even if they are crap. However, there are also a lot of great films out there that aren't related to games or comics.

We accept it in the game because it makes for cool gameplay, but will a superhero work on film that can be defeated by guys with earthed connectors and lightning rods?

Actually that could be like a super villain. Earthed Connector Man and the Rubber Shoe Gang.

He needs to play more games. POP: Sands of Time springs to mind, and Uncharted too!

I really enjoyed Infamous. It's not genius, but it's very solid and fun. The story is reasonably strong, by game standards, but I doubt it would work as a film.

I suppose it's better than yet another unnecessary remake of a classic film, which Hollywood seems to be so keen on churning out these days. I suppose it's a safe bet to fork out cash for a film that already comes with it's own fan base and a guaranteed audience.

A tenner this never sees the light of day.

Far too early to make a movie out of the game imo.

Clearly, Mr. Turner hasn't played very many video games in the last 20 years.
