id hints at Quake DS game News

DS News by Tom Bramwell

4 August, 2007

id Software's John Carmack says he would really like to do a "Quake Arena-themed game on the DS".

Admitting that he's a huge fan of Metroid Prime Hunters' control system, the developer - who earlier told QuakeCon attendees about a two-week holiday in a hotel working with the DS dev-kit - said Quake for DS would probably be "the next DS game"

"I'm pretty sure I'm going to make that one happen," he said, although nothing's been signed yet.

"My early inclination on this is to build a game that is definitely Quake Arena-themed... but leave it more or less Doom 2 style deathmatch with two-and-a-half-D," he said of its potential content.

Sorry, a good idea? from id? From John Carmack?

Did I just fall into some dimensional rift where this sort of fucked-up shit happens?

Yeah, but this could finally be a quake game designed specifically for the DS hardware and not just squeezed and shoehorned into it. Would love to see a revamped version of the first one, always liked the mixture of fantasy and scifi there:-)

Could be awesome if it ever happens - will have to keep a close eye on developments.

Does John Carmack have three hands?

No, he has two regular hands and one large, prehensile penis.

DS controls for shooters are indeed very good, with a similar feel to keyboard and mouse. If only the DS did 3D a little better.

I hope Nintendos next handheld keeps to the DS formula only with better 3D. If they want to throw in some larger screens too you won't hear me complaining.

Similar feel to keyboard and mouse? Oh geez..
They have nothing similar. Metroid Primes control-system was fairly decent to say, but it truly was not so enjoyable on a long run.
Yes it is pretty good for handheld consoles, but I for one cant enjoy it any more than I can for analog-nub cos it just isnt comfortable. (unless you have that three hands that someone mentioned)

I like the Metroid controls, too. But an arena themed Quake? I am not interested. If it was going to be something story driven, maybe then.

I find the MP controls fantastic. Like playing with m/kb, only on a handheld.

Q3 Arena on the DS would be 'Teh Awesome' or whatever it is inter-web-kiddies like to say.
