afraid to sya your right JA$ON, this was created for PS2 and will be ported over o Xbox as with things like Timesplitters. Hopefuly the loading times will be less than those on PS2 but that about the best we can hope for.

Looks good anyway, might get it for Ps2 instead of xBox as i doubt it will be back compatible on Xbox360 at launch.

Yep, played the PS2 demo a few times yesterday, looks good, but I wouldn't say its one of the best looking games on the system.
Plays quite well though, despite the demo time restriction being somewhat short.

I'm as much a fan of FPSs as anyone and this does look like it will be very good. But the whole "wanking over guns" mentality seems to be getting taken to riduclous new heights and proving to be a little much for me.

Maybe I should just play the game when it arrives and avoid reading any more interviews.

They've not got gore and body parts because

a) They want to get a 15 certificate at worst
b) They don't want Jack Thompson on their case.

Chubb isn't a huge fan of online FPS play generally, by all accounts. "I don't really see how capture the flag is interesting or exciting to most people, and whenever I play those things it seems to be a bunch of American racist kids just swearing at me," he complains.

Hah. So right.

In my opinion the only game that had any satisfactory blood splatter effects was the original Perfect Dark. Wish they hadn't gotten rid of the gore in this though, that's what I secretly hope for each time I play a new fps.

A bit of Robocop springs to mind, specifically in the commentary track during the scene where Ed-209 has his little 'glitch'. There Verhoeven, iirc, goes on a bit about how important it was to go totally OTT with the gore, to show how a machine gun rips a human body to pieces.

In Black, they don't really want to give the actual fee of firing guns, they want to give an NRA feeling of firing the guns, don't they?
Not that there's anything wrong with it, it's fantasy after all. Do like the fact that in the demo there isn't a use key. Can't deny how much it is a shooting game if the firebutton is the key you need to use to get anything and everything done right down to the opening of doors.

But what about the profanity? Surely that would push the certificate up a bit. Unless it's just 'PG' stuff.

Anyway, FPS without blood looks stupid. Maybe EA requested it, like in MoH.

I don't think Black has anything to do with accuracy. Or, to put it bluntly, not if Chubb's remark ("everything you shoot gets blown to f***") holds any water, anyway :)

Alas, the possibility of a X360 version will make me wait for a while - unfortunately :\

Artemus, do you seriously think that a lack of blood in an FPS that is trying vainly to pump some life back into a stagnant, boring genre is "stupid"? Honestly, I don't think it matters at all. If this game delivers everything that Criterion are trying to do with it then I for one want as many people as possible to experience it. And if that means no blood, then so be it.

So.....its an 'on rails FPS, with no multiplayer, few weapons, no online mode or sandbox type thing, no intersting gore and will simply try and launch on the fact that it has loud guns and all the other features it should have, they'll add one at a time to future installments, meaning that by Black XII< we'll have a complete game. Sounds like Driv3ry fleecage to me. Surely the loud gun thing novelty will wear off?

Right, I know this is opening up a can of worms, but I recently played through Halo for the first time, admittedly on a mac, and I just thought it was shite.

All the levels look the same. All the enemies look the same, plus are aliens, which is never as fun as shooting people, and the vehicles? Well, they almost saved it, but not quite. The weapons are fine and I did like the sticky grenades, but I'm totally at a loss what the fuss was all about.

Oh, I only played the single player, so that might have something to do with it.

Anyway, Black looks to be far more my cup of tea.

Yes I do. And I suspect this is really down to EA, rather than a 'creative' decision by Criterion. It doesn't add up. For a game that is suposedly trying to emulate the great action movie shoot-outs, surely they're removing quite a bit from the experience by omitting blood all together?

When you watch an action film you expect to see the red sauce. I don't see why this is any different. I could live without it *if* Criterion weren't trying to sell the game as something it isn't.

Imagine, if you will, how would Burnout look if they had gone to the extreme and had bodies flying through the windows on every other crash... Somehow the lack of blood does not bother me...

To the guy who said HALO was a bit disappointing: I know exactly what you mean. Basically, all the interior sections are really incredibly boring and the outdoor vehicle bits and stuff are fun. But it's mostly really great because of multiplayer splitscreen.

HALO2 was just shit altogether imo, single and multiplayer. Boring as shit SP and online multi = poor man's UT2004 imo.

Halo is a very divisive title. I wish it hadn't come to so influence the last (is it the last yet?) generation of console titles almost. A genre benchmark would appear to be something hard to break free of. Though I'm sure the post-HL2 PC shooter market will have similar problems to overcome. Nice as it is to hear someone stating their title is doing its own thing I question how much more room the FPS has to evolve in its current form (fully destructable environments and the unceasingly quest from increased graphical fidelity I imagine). I truely look forward to the next Metroid incarnation and the opportunity to feel an Revolution flavoured FPS. It'll certainly add to the perpetual joypad/mouse debate.

Different genre, yes, same 'creative' mind, though...

"And misses the point entirely."
Well, that depends on what the point is. The point I was trying to make (by a far-fetched example, I must admit) is that you don't need all levels of realism to make an enjoyable game.

True, if you compare MoH to, let's say, Saving Private Ryan, it feels a bit 'empty' without the bloodbath. However, it managed to display war more accurately than Soldier of Fortune and its over-the-top gore.

Apart from the Silent Cartographer, Halo was dull, enlivened only by some half decent weapons.

Having played the demo I don't see why it needed blood, but then, I'm 35, not 16. It's the only title I've played, PC or console that 'gets' shooting a gun. And FPS, really, all you do is shoot guns. There's occasionally a decent story (HL2) or a total melodrama with a shit script (MGS2), but really, you just pull a trigger pretty much all the way through. It's only when I played Black did I realise the others weren't trying.

As for not using in game models for cutscenes, I have to agree with Chubb. If you're going to doing humans, and the cutscenes aren't in game, why not just film humans than risk criticism about how cool or shit your models are in cutscenes compared to MGS or HL.

It looks interesting, and I can't deny I'm keen to try it, but it certainly isn't gonna be 'the best shooter that anyone's ever made'. I also think it sounds very shallow & the lack of multiplayer concerns me. Nonetheless, I think this is going down on my 'to rent' list for late Feb.

Those guys are goddamn arrogant though...

Black reminds me of Hard Boiled shoot outs (minus any ketchup). The debris and destruction is awesome - much better than F.E.A.R which i think flattered to deceive.

Framerate was occasinally dodgy in extreme shootouts, but it is absolutley beautiful to the point it really isnt ps2 like. Very much like Shadow of the Colossus, if you forgive it for its ambition ( I DO!) then you will over look this.

The second level (forest) is lovely looking, very solid, a huge

It aint revolutionary but very focussed on the shooting experience which it nails with aplomb! 2p
