The fact he dodged the question on the size of the maps makes me worry my claustraphobia may kick in on some levels.

Edit (didn't meen to sound sooooo negative): does looks tasty though!

The pure carnage and adrenaline of Burnout in an FPS? I'm sold, as long as it lives up to the hype. Criterion dont seem to be a company that shirk on that front though, could be good.

Does anyone know if this is a complete ps2 exclusive or are other versions in the works?

I like this guy. He's answering questions in ways most developers wouldn't dare to.

Questions about AI would normally throw up "Yeah we're doing blah-di-blah and it's gonna make player feel woop-di-doo". He's like "Fuck AI, it's just about shooting big fat guns!!!"

Think I'm gonna like this one. Sounds as much fun as blowing up a cow with a hand grenade.

Tell us about the AI - are you making any bold claims here?

Alex Ward: No.

I KNEW IT

Still, hope they can do something good with it.

Sigh, the ps2 isnt capable for rendering grafs that are acceptable. This is either a conn or they are screenies from the xbox. (And dont pretend it has never been done before!).

Anyway its an old game in every way. Non kewl interactive enemy AI that actually speaks and seems to be alive (H2) or interactive (counter)coop (pd(0)). So nothing original there. Yawn. Next.

I pity your inability to be excited. Did you see it running before you trawled out this tired paragraph of cynicism? Or are you just assuming this is the usual hype and feel the need to get in there first with a dribbling rant?

"You do realise you'll have to endure a tedious backlash from the vocal minority..."

Come on, thats a presumtive answer to your own question, if a developer was to respond to "What's the thinking behind not putting a multiplayer mode in there?" with "We're not but we realise we'll have to endure a tedious backlash from the vocal minority..." you'd cry foul, "Minority!?! We all play online games now!!!" you'd scream.

I understand eurogamer are having a wet dream over the release of Black (more so than with any other game in the past) but I for one thought 'Physics based online play could be fun!', am I going to cry 'HAX' cause its not it? No.

However the more I read of your 'Black' coverage the more I think of of IGN and this comic: http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2005-05-13&res=l

Yeah, god forbid that we'd like the look of something without being paid off. In fact, you've rumbled us - our entire business model is based on hating all games until we're paid enough money by the publishers to say nice things about them. The crazy thing is, they lap it up! They give us millions to pretend we like their games! We're THAT important to them!

Or maybe Black just looks pretty cool. Hmm. Did anyone see where I put Occam's Razor? I'm sure I dropped it here somewhere...

Maybe it's just me but ever since E3 people have been so flipping negative and cynical. It's really, really boring. Black looks great! Criterion have never pulled a fast one before, and frankly I think they deserve a little bit more respect than they're getting.

Xerx3s: Are you saying that BO3 doesn't have impressive graphics? Are you saying that what's being shown here is *impossible* on a PS2? Do you have any specialised knowledge in this area or are you just being an opinionated troll?

Anyone else notice the lack of Renderware talk during this interview? Methinks somthing is up & EA are now keeping RW to themselves.

In the past, Criterion have always brought up the subject of renderware while being interviews for the burnout series and not a mention of it here (which is especially suspiscious in the qestion about getting so much out of a PS2).

No, that was certainly not what we saw - the actual show had a room set aside upstairs on the EA stand and had a full 15 minute walkthrough of level 6. This Gamespot guy saw a "very brief" video at a pre E3 event. Not even sure what that was, but please ignore him.

Last time I had fun just shooting things, was with Golden Eye on the N64 - I could walk around emptying twin smgs into bulkheads for hours on end. If Criterion can manage to do for firing a gun what they did with driving a car in the Burnout series, then it'll be great.

It'll be on Xbox as well. EA don't do exclusives, unless they absolutely have to like with Stranger's Wrath.

What? Criterion invented Renderware - I'd be shocked if they weren't using it for this; they use it for everything else that they do, don't they?

Looking forward to this one, but I do wish Criterion would shut up about it until they are ready to actually show some footage of it moving. Screenshots are so worthless nowadays, as is marketing hyperbole.

Alex Ward: Maps is such a 'PC' term.

Small maps then.

Or perhaps there is only one HUGE area you run around and shoot things in.

That'd be... not so neat.

Chances are this guy had to write 15 show reports in a day or something demented like that and barely had time to blink before filing copy. That's often the case, and shows how little he had to go on at the time.

What, you mean the one HUGE map in HL2 was 'not so neat'?
(Well, I think thats what Alex Ward is hinting at.)

Everybody always makes empty nonsensical statements about the AI in thier game. That'll be smarter then before or "groundbraking", it's a meaningless statement. Criterion simply aren't going there, no doubt there'll be AI and it'll do it's job just fine, as in most FPS games, but there's no point in hyping that part of the game when there is stuff that is genuinly exciting and should be the focus of previews.

Not hyping something doesn't mean it won't be there or not be good enough.

I don't really see what seperates this from any other FPS but I suppose having one that's just really fun wouldn't go amiss. I appreciate the developer's honesty here as well.
