Hudson unveils first-ever WiiWare FPS News

Wii News by Ellie Gibson

5 February, 2009

Hudson Entertainment has unveiled Onslaught, billing it as the first first-person shooter for WiiWare.

It's set in the distant future and sees you leaving a team of operatives investigating why a research colony has suddenly lost contact. In an astonishingly unpredictable plot twist, turns out it's got something to do with a load of strange and homicidal creatures, who proceed to attack you.

The Wii remote will be used to aim, and shaking it reloads ammo. You use the nunchuk to lob grenades. There's an online co-op mode for up to four players.

There's no word on a release date or a price point as yet, but at least there are some screenshots to check out.

So Metroid Prime doesn't count then?

Looks like a cross between Metroid and Armorines/Starship Troopers. Could be average...

Caught me out for a second too, but they're talking about the downloadable WiiWare catalogue.

Metroid Prime isn't WiiWare.

EDIT Damn, too slow! I still reckon this will be alright though.

Could be a hoot; I certainly couldn't have anticipated an FPS on WiiWare and definitely not from Hudson -- will this sell in the Japanese shop as well?

I don't know much about the Wii but to be honest that doesn't look too bad for a WiiWare game.

I intend to withhold my judgement until I know anything about this game. For example, the main problem with FPS' on Wii (beyond the stagnation in most of the genre) has been one of control scheme and a diddly WiiWare game has just as much chance as getting that right as Generic Console Shooter Port X-3. Possibly more so, actually, being a dedicated release possibly aimed at them "hardcores" I hear so much about.

So yeah, that's a nice surprise. Don't be rubbish.

Watyoutalkingaboutwillis?

The controls on metroid prime 3 played better than ANY fps i've played on ANY other console. In fact i find the nunchuck/pointer combo better than using the mouse/keyboard (As the nunchuck is analogue)

Yep - I'm happy to concede that Metroid Prime was aces and involved shooting from the first person perspective; on the other hand no other game bothered to notice.

A WiiWare FPS! With online co-op! Now there's a surprise. Can't see myself buying it, though.
