Home open beta to begin tomorrow

All PS3 owners invited.

Sony will open PlayStation Home to the world tomorrow as the open beta finally gets into gear.

The game client will be free. Once downloaded, a Home icon will pop up in the PlayStation Network column of the XMB. While the service will be free there will be some paid-for content, such as extra clothes and accessories.

Europeans will be able to explore a Far Cry 2-themed environment, and Sony hopes to make areas for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Warhawk, Motorstorm and SOCOM available soon.

In the future, there will be partnerships with and themes from companies such as EA, SEGA, Eidos and Midway.

Fashion label Diesel will offer up some trendy togs, while furniture designer Ligne Roset has all sorts of upholstery collections to make your house stand out from the crowd.

Red Bull is hosting a virtual flying challenge where you get to be the pilot. This will take place on the Red Bull Island.

More importantly, Paramount Studios, Eurogamer TV and Hexus TV will be showing their wares in the Home Theatre. That means Johnny Minkley will be offered alongside trailers and interviews for films such as Watchmen, which actually looks quite good. Johnny Minkley also looks good, of course.

If only Big Phil Harrison were here to smash the bottle on the hull. At least Kaz Hirai had something to say, specifically: "PlayStation Home is truly a promising network community service on the PlayStation platform, made possible with the powerful combination of PS3's overwhelming computational power and PlayStation Network that covers many countries around the globe." Phew.

Oh, there's more: "We are committed to providing PS3 users with exciting gaming experiences with PlayStation Home and together with our partners and users, expand the new world of interactive entertainment as we move forward."

Finally we can all show those Japanese Home designers what foreign barbarians are capable of doing to a piece of software.

I'm not gonna do the whole Home bashing thing, it's not for me and I know it. I have to ask though, do gamers really wants this sort of thing?

Personally, it makes me feel a little sick (could be bias though as I did work in advertising for years and HATE the evil stuff!).
• DFawkes #4 3 years ago

But on the forums I was told "the 17 of december will open the HOME for everyone....finally!!!!!!" by Servo. Servo has always been a reliable source, how could he not be right?
• influenceuk #5 3 years ago

It's good to see SCEE are finally releasing this. After being in the Beta since July, i still dont feel its ready for release.

Don't get me wrong, its good, and looks amazing. However there are still some bugs that need sorting out. Unless they have sorted them out in this release.

Also whats more annoying is the fact that the UK/EU Home has still got the same Home Plaza area that was originally released. Where as the US and Japan have both had face lifts!

At the end of the day, least we'll finally get some English speaking people back on home!
• Beano #6 3 years ago

"After being in the Beta since July, i still dont feel its ready for release."

What's wrong with it?

I'm also in the closed beta and mostly everything seems to work fine - the "only" problem is the serious lack of content and areas in the beta. I hope the open beta will have more content.

But it REALLY needs a custom soundtrack option - the Home muzak is driving me crazy!
• b00n #7 3 years ago

So, a piece of software to do some crap marketing with, and an extra layer of troubles for when you want to watch a video, chat with your friends, or show your achievements. Sounds good to me! ...

Really curious how this will turn out, let's hope for the best.
• Moz #8 3 years ago

@Beano, doesn't the XMB music override work in home?

Looking forward to tomorrow, as luck would have it i've got the day off :D

I think home has the potential to be something big as long as they keep a fresh supply of mini games coming.
• JYM60 #9 3 years ago

Good I guess. Get it out of the way. At the minute I'm not sure I care. Will the game party/switching stuff (debatably the only good thing about home) even be in place?

I'm still interested ti see it anyway.

"I'm not gonna do the whole Home bashing thing, it's not for me and I know it. I have to ask though, do gamers really wants this sort of thing?"

The Red Bull thing is actually some sort of minigame type thing.

And as for saying do gamers want this sort of thing?

You vastly underestimate how lame most gamers/people are.
• penhalion #10 3 years ago

Welcome to the boredom :)
• BOFH_UK #11 3 years ago

Hmmm, while I'm certainly curious about Home I've never been particularly convinced of it's 'system seller' status. There's a few reasons for that (the fact that the PS3 doesn't come with a headset as standard so the number of people using voice chat is likely to be fairly limited, the micro-transactions, the possibility of Sony getting the demand horribly wrong and having a queue a mile long for the fun stuff and, most importantly, if you're going to build a social hub then why on earth not load it automatically on boot and put the XMB over it if necessary) but I'll reserve judgement until I get a chance to play around with it. That being said, I'm really surprised at the way they're launching this. It's seems to blow any momentum and excitement for the service that may exist in potential customers at the worst possible time when most big present Christmas shopping will have been done and money is scarce.

Oh well, roll on tomorrows and let's hope the PSN can handle the load...
• Goodfella #12 3 years ago

Ok penhalion, we get it, you think Home is a waste of time, enough already.
• DFawkes #13 3 years ago

I like Home, but admit it's empty as is. I'll reserve full judgement until after other devs have added stuff, and the shops are fuller.
• NotSoSlim #14 3 years ago

Finally!! However got to say well done to Sony, obviously its not finished article by any means but its a start. At least its not mandatory...yet!!
• Aggesan #15 3 years ago

Nice! I hope there are more options for hair then in the beta. I'm really looking forward to this :-)
• Beano #16 3 years ago

@Moz: No XMB music only work for supported titles - incl. Home.
• JYM60 #17 3 years ago

"At least its not mandatory...yet!!"

Don't make it mandatory for user I agree with.

However I think if they don't make devs support home it's going to be a huge waste.
• Widge #18 3 years ago

Ended up chatting to some guy yesterday about Detroit Techno, Richie Hawtin and various other bits, got a new bod on my list and told him about a wee little music community that he may have been interested in. So good stuff!

I quite like home, although approach it with the mentality of "this is meant to be some sort of shit hot game" and you won't get it.
• Goodfella #19 3 years ago

I quite like home, although approach it with the mentality of "this is meant to be some sort of shit hot game" and you won't get it.

That appears to be the problem, a lot of people have completely way off expectations of what Home is and what Home is meant to be.

I'm tempting but it sounds like too much hard work, so I'll wait until its officially out and then download it and never use it instead
• NotSoSlim #21 3 years ago

@ JYM60

They have the devs supporting it. Lets hope Sonys E3 conference and any convention get streamed through Home. Anyway good luck to Sony, something different.

• Widge #24 3 years ago

Indeed. I quite like it because I sit on here and chat to people, I sit on music places and chat to people, I sit on various other places, so its obviously something I enjoy doing. Also the entire "free to access" malarky keeps it open to the market. Will be interested to see how it develops over time.

Certainly its going to be of interest to lots of companies when it comes to pushing their games/products to markets as a source of PR. I've noticed it happening to Mr Sackboy. Got a product coming out? Release a Sackboy costume! Another stream of PR. The same for this, God Of War 3 is coming out, come to our ancient Athens area on Home and download a trial and some movies! Now you can like that or not, you don't have to buy into it.
• Moonprince #25 3 years ago

• JYM60 #26 3 years ago

"They have the devs supporting it."

You telling me that any game other than Warhawk will lauch online from home? Becasue I doubt it, making home pretty worthless to most gamers.
• Vanmunt #27 3 years ago

Home is a good laugh if you have real friends, communication works well and its fun to meet up and piss about.... one friend is on every night.. but then he is a nosey bastard that likes to have a few sherberts on a friday and annoy people.. get a 15 man hammer going and try not too laugh... oh, and anything where you can wind up the french and germans is a plus for me.
• Widge #28 3 years ago

Did they not demo it with Motorstorm launching from it a big age ago?

I've got the PS3 headset now, but I tell you what.... I prefer it being text based myself. Two people started up in french near the guy I was talking to yesterday so we wandered up to them and muted them. Oh god, if only I could do that in real life.
• JYM60 #29 3 years ago

oh, and anything where you can wind up the french and germans is a plus for me.

GLOL. True.
• JYM60 #30 3 years ago

"Did they not demo it with Motorstorm launching from it a big age ago?"

Yeah Phil Harrison did at E3 two years ago. As well as a connected home website were you could check out your appartment and stuff....
• Bigglesworth #31 3 years ago

How come I find out from Kotaku that EG are supplying video content for Home? (Edit: cos I didn't read the full page - doh!)

It'd be quite funny if its podcasts of Richard Leadbetter's face-off articles =)

• NotSoSlim #32 3 years ago

@ JYM60

Dont know about game launching i was just talking about devs actually supporting Home. I am guessin that any multiplayer 1st party game will have game launching. It may be useless to most but its not mandatory and its an option to use. I will use it as i have not chatted to any of my PSN mates due to the broken nature of the communication.
• Dark_Era #33 3 years ago

Ahhhh good to hear that, so this is an open beta right and not the final release??, cos am kinda looking forward to it and hopig it does well and just have this feeling that it still being a beta might have certain fanboys go on about how shit it is,, lol
• JohnnyWashnGo #34 3 years ago

Can't wait for it to be honest... its not like you have to pay for it at the moment :)
• menage #35 3 years ago

I already had an invite, and I couldn't be assed to go through the process (PS3 installs are a real bitch). I really don't want it, can I just continue using my old interface or is that going to be totally replaced.?

• Goodfella #36 3 years ago

@ Wazzer

Did it not occur to you that Sony can make triple A games AND Home?
• optimusprym8 #37 3 years ago

Popped in over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised to see lots of people running about. Having to wait for a game of bowling or pool seemed kinda stupid though. Sometimes there are Real World aspects that shouldn't be replicated online. It's not like I can put a virtual pound on the side of the table to get in line either.
• Widge #38 3 years ago

and have there not been enough good games for you this year? really?
• rodge020679 #39 3 years ago

• spudsbuckley #40 3 years ago

It's just Second Life for PS3 FFS.

Actual gamers don't give a shit about it.
• Bigglesworth #41 3 years ago

@menage

Allowing a completely automatic process to run while you make a cuppa or something is 'a real bitch'? Wow, your life must be an unending series of near unsurmountable trials...

You'll be glad to know however that use of Home is indeed optional; thats one less thing to lose sleep over, eh? =)
• Beano #42 3 years ago

"Having to wait for a game of bowling or pool seemed kinda stupid though. Sometimes there are Real World aspects that shouldn't be replicated online. "

So true. I suspect that Sony will sell pool tables, bowling alleys and arcade cabinets for peoples apartments in the future - just speculating ;)
• iokthemonkey #43 3 years ago

"Midway themes?"

So what's that, a foreclosure notice you for your virtual house?
• influenceuk #44 3 years ago

@Beano, there are a few bugs which need ironing out. Least it has improved over 0.98.

I am still lucky enough to have a sofa on the roof of my harbour appartment lol however it seems they have now fixed the bug that allowed you to do that!

Also i can confirm that the sign, and the Warhawk mine are still in the harbour area :D
• Beano #45 3 years ago

"Actual gamers don't give a shit about it. "

I'm a gamer and do give a damn about Home... but not for launching games outside Home which is a bit pointless.
• Beano #46 3 years ago

@influenceuk : I only got into v1.0 so can't talk about bugs in previous builds... but so far it worls pretty good. Just needs a LOT more content to be interesting ;)
• Mongoose #47 3 years ago

It is free remember...you don't have to use it. Sure, they could have channelled all these resources somewhere else, but there's certainly something missing from PS3 (don't say games!) in terms of communication and online and I think this is in the right direction.
• iokthemonkey #48 3 years ago

The other thing is, isn't this like Sony's "Animal Crossing?"

Personally I hate AC, as it's pointless gack, but the latest Wii ads are clearly designed to appeal to a certain demographic and the social aspect of that game is really being pushed to the fore. I could see Home being a similar thing. Except without the annoying furvert fuel.
• Goodfella #49 3 years ago

@ Wazzer

Yeah but, the world doesn't revolve around you.

I've discovered that there's a limit of about 20 couches that you can add to your apartment. I was hoping to turn my gaff into a kinda old folk hoarder type gaff with all sorts of shit piled up to the ceiling.

That was the most entertaining thing I've found so far......
• madgerald Verified Studio Head of PR & Marketing, Colossal Games LTD #53 3 years ago

@oreillymj - You could be the PS3 Home equivalent of Mr Treebus.

• oreillymj #54 3 years ago

@madgerald - Who?

BTW is it just me, or is Home dog slow. I have a 3Mb line and downloads take forever. Also moving from place to place is slow.

Just visiting the 4 building released so far can take about an hour.
• madgerald Verified Studio Head of PR & Marketing, Colossal Games LTD #55 3 years ago

@oreillymj - he was a hoarder that became quite famous on TV's "Life of Grime". He ended up in a care home with a wash, a shave and a good meal.. Died later.

SCEE have just had a show n tell in London for home: Linky Linky it aint stinky
• Widge #56 3 years ago

I can see where you're coming from, more games for the games machine etc. Although I come at it from the perspective of having seen the machine as more than that (some people say thats a bad thing, everyone to their own). I like the fact that there are many strings to its bow. I'm loaded with games at the moment so taking the break in releases until Killzone to actually tackle some of them. Christ, I've still got Oblivion to finish off from last year! I like the fact that Sony are trying new things and actually trying to craft some new first party IPs too.
• jaxon58 #57 3 years ago

I'm looking forward to trying it, whether I only give it half an hour or longer, it's not costing me anything.

On the point of 'It's all about the games', I don't really agree with that. I bought my PS3 knowing it wasn't just for games, it's a media centre also! I don't see anything wrong with them trying something a little different and if it doesn't work out for them, then they might learn from it and create something better next time.

I'm not interested in the MGS series, but should I complain that Konami are wasting their budget on making something I'm not into? No, because some people are. You can't please everyone.
• Vanmunt #58 3 years ago

Home will live and die on updated content. I would doubt anybody will rush home every night to wander around home instead of playing a game or watching a bluray.. however, nearly everybody will log into home when they hear something new is uploaded.

• iokthemonkey #59 3 years ago

>I could see Home being a similar thing. Except without the annoying furvert fuel.

"ITS ALL ABOUT THE FREAKING GAMES!! "

Ok, then play the games and ignore Home. Easy :)
• oreillymj #61 3 years ago

@madgerald - Ok, so just like Mr Treebus, except I have a pile of "designer" furniture in my flash new apartment.
Unfortunately none of the stores in Home would sell my 5000 copies of Razzle and 600 old pot noodle containers.
• madgerald Verified Studio Head of PR & Marketing, Colossal Games LTD #62 3 years ago

• influenceuk #63 3 years ago

@ beano, agreed more content would be great, also getting my TGS shirts back would be too lol

Home is really gonna make SCE money from marketing. The potentail is massive! Which is why they can provide the service for free.
• SEVQA #64 3 years ago

Exactly, but try telling Wazzer that.

@ Wazzer, no I'm not trolling, I just think that your points are null and void and based on the premise that you personally think Home is a waste of time, it's not a 'fact' as you put it that it is a waste of time.

"ITS ALL ABOUT THE FREAKING GAMES!! "

Have you not heard about the BLUE RAY? - IT'S TEH FEW-CHAR!

Unless you meant some circus based games with freaks in?
• T4RG4 #69 3 years ago

It's Blu-ray.

I think Wazzer perfectly sums up the average consumer. I would lump myself, and friends who have games systems/play games online in the same bracket. Home sounds kind of... sad in a way? I could definitely see myself creating some cool looking apartment, selecting furniture... but how long would that last? 30mins?

As a way to chat to people and connect to/launch games? You're having a laugh :D

I'm all for Sony trying something different, but I dont think its been put together very well. It smacks of your stereotypical marketing/non-games playing bigwig rubbish of "Home is for the community, a place you can arrange to meet, play games and interact with other people". Come on.

Load game, connect with friends, play game. That's all that most people care about IMO.

wazzer, if you 'just' want to play games, why don't you get a 360 instead?

I am looking forward to trying out Home, hoping it isn't as empty and sterile as other such metaverses. Deep down I am pretty convinced, though, that it will fail.

• NorfolkNClue #73 3 years ago

Noller - he's prolly got one. As a 29 year old home owner, there's a chance he's got enough disposable to get both.
• dazrichards #74 3 years ago

I'm a bit meh about this. The XBE was an improvement but it cunningly placed advertising more prominently (the ads are the first menu item). I may walk around it occasionally and decorate my room but I can't imagine spending much time on it.
• Phily50 #75 3 years ago

Anyone know how they are going to implement Home? i.e. will you have to go to the store to download it, as the article isn't that clear.
• AOFanboi #76 3 years ago

wazzer, if you 'just' want to play games, why don't you get a 360 instead?

Won't help, that can play movies and music as well.

A Wii is a good compromise (no DVD playback), but there are lots of non-game channel shit on it.

Maybe get an old cartridge-based console?

@Wazzer
With the PLAYstation 3 you can PLAY Blu-rays, PLAY CDs, PLAY DVDs, PLAY AVIs and DIVX, PLAY slideshows of your pics, hell it'll even PLAY games. ;)

• Goodfella #80 3 years ago

I know Wazzers problem.

There are loads of games to play on the PLAYstation 3, a brief visit to Gamestation or Game will make that obvious. The trouble is Wazzer can't comprehend that there are loads of people out there who only have a PS3 to PLAY on. For those people it's a great console with lots of great games, just as it is for people who only have a 360.

Get your head out of your arse and stop acting like you are the center of it all.

vorlon_man:

"Wazzer sounds like the average HARDCORE consumer. Someone who considers Gaming a pastime and generally wants to separate his entertainment into categories, of which Gaming is a high priority."

I see you point, and in part I can agree, however I think you are making a mistake if you believe the PS3 really is the 'media centre' Sony would have us believe. Its not really any different to the 360 other than Blu-ray... it comes as the all in one kit sure, but its still meant to be about the games and thats why I think Wazzers point is valid. If an uneducated consumer buys a PS3 I'd wager they are doing it due to the Playstations past (great games history - being known for gaming).

"The average consumer, however, buys entertainment - and Gaming is just a part of that, but not necessarily their priority.

Why do you think the Wii is doing so bloody marvellously virtually all the time?"

The Wii is somewhat different to the PS3 though. I've never known a games consoles bought by or 'sanctioned' by women as I have with the Wii. It is, in my humble opinion, a little naff and they have no choice but to attract those who class a games machine as 'light entertainment'. They dropped out of the 'graphics race' perhaps quite rightly, and went after an audience not used to playing games. The PS3 is way outside that bracket and delivering Home to its audience will not change this, much like the weak avatars on the new 360 dashboard will not change the opinion of many that the 360 is a hardcore games machine.

"Home is meant to soften the interface for everyone, and give you something different."

I dont think it actually softens the experience of using the PS3 though. It provides a platform upon which the marketeers can shout about how its all community, friends, playtime and so on but it's likely to appeal to my sister (who has a PS3, bought based on PS1/PS2 history) much like the Sims does to an audience on the PC (an audience unlikely to play, let alone purchase, anything else).

I'm not pointing you out here - but too many people get caught up in the whole 'community experience' garbage without really understanding how disinterested the average consumer is. Yesterday is was all 'episodic gaming' meh. The worst culprits seem to currently work within Sony management. All in my opinion of course :D

T4RG4 - "I think Wazzer perfectly sums up the average consumer"

I think you mean "AVERAGE X360 HARDCORE GAMER CONSUMER" the fact he's on his 4th 360 validates this. Hell if I went through 4 PS3s in 3yrs....actually I would of switched sides after the 3rd.

Home is there if you want it, and like wazza, I'm not that interested in it, but I might give it a go just for the red bull racing & bowling. Unlike wazza, I use my ps3 to stream videos off my server as well, funny that as the 360 does the same, yet he doesn't complain about that.
• T4RG4 #83 3 years ago

I was under the impression I hadnt the need to include reference to games when talking about games consoles on a gaming website but yes. I understand what you're getting at so I'll reword it to - Average game consumer likely to post on EG ;). The 4th 360... blimey, I'd have gone mental (mines been fine touch wood). Its testament to the enjoyment the 360 provides if he's stuck through it all through is it not?

Yes, Home is there if you want it but the point I'm not liable to agree with is that Home will provide any noticeable impact on the uptake or positiive appearance of Sony's console. I dont think it'll attract the Wazzas of this world (he's becoming famous now) and it'll certainly not tempt anyone I know who plays games (on any system). Will it tempt those playing on the Wii? No, I dont think it will. The PS3 is an expensive piece of kit, value yes, expensive to most people nonetheless.

I'd have a go of bolwing and redbull racing too - thing is they'd probably be far more popular if you just selected them off the front-end and it loaded the game for all to play. Walking around, meeting up with friends, talking to them with chat pads (as shown in some of the pics) whilst playing the game... it just comes across as weak to me.

Home has been talked about for ages now but I just dont see it doing that well. If it was a free download on the PC it might be a different story. The PS3 isnt, despite its technological advantages over both the 360 and Wii, as easily integrated into the home as the Wii. Where is the audience? Will it bring new consumers to the machine? I very much doubt it.

Again, I do not question Sony's desire to expand their audience share and it's makeup but I do not think Home is the answer to either aim.

I'm off to watch a movie now actually. That Batman thingy... would probably be better watching it from within Home though. I could send you an invite to my apartment within which I have the most fantastic furniture, all from well known brands and a very unique rug which cost a reasonable 3 Euros.

There is loads more I want to say regarding this ''is home worth it'' ''is the ps3 heading in the wrong direction'' subject but im typing this out using my ps3 sixaxis (Oh the irony) as my pc has died, so I cant be arsed typing all my thoughts using this cumbersome method..

Another cheap shot at the PS3, you can't help yourself can you.

As least you are able to still use the internet in a fashion thanks to the PS3 browser despite it's oh so crappy input method, oh the horror. Try posting here on your 360...oh wait.

"Im afraid your wrong there buddy.. Noone plays blurays or plays cd's do they!
You WATCH a bluray, you LISTEN to a cd.. You WATCH a dvd.. Its games that can be played..
I have NEVER in my life said ''noone disturb me as Im playing the Dark knight bluray'' where as I genuinely said the other day ''Im WATCHING the dark knight so leave me alone for a couple of hours''
The same with cd's.. I loved settling down with a joint while LISTENING to the killers new album. None plays cd's do they, they listen to them.
Ya get what Im saying. "

OK, maybe you misunderstood what I was saying.. Yes, you're right YOU don't play a CD or Blu-ray - you listen and watch them. However, The PLAYStation will PLAY CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray, MP3s, slideshows, AVIs, and even games. If you really want, you can plug in a USB keyboard and mouse and surf the net. Let's not forget you can run Linux on it, easily upgrade the harddrive if you feel the need. The PS3 is more than just a games console, as is the Xbox 360.
Ya get what I'm saying :)

I've got both and I use them for different things. I play the Xbox more because most of my friends are on XBL and I have more games for that. However, my XBL Gold membership needs renewing this month and at the moment, I don't plan on renewing it until I've finished Fallout 3 and Fable 2. I'll be in PS3 Home today if anyone wants to add me - MadGerald

• rprince #97 3 years ago

@Wabe

Not if your PC keyboard has the old style PS/2 plug (by that I don't mean PlayStation 2, but the old round one with prongs). You need a USB keyboard or an adaptor to make it with PlayStation 3...

@wazzer

So what machine do you put your CD and DVD in to listen and watch, respectively?

And then after it's in the drive, which button do you press to activate the CD or DVD so you can listen to or watch it?
