Data required for retailer to take orders.

Retailer HMV has clarified to Eurogamer that Heavy Rain's release date - listed on HMV.com as 26th February - is actually still unconfirmed.

This ties in with Sony's silence on the matter earlier in the day.

"The release date is still TBC as we understand it," an HMV spokesperson told us, "but in order to list items on [our website] and to make them available for pre-order - or to enable customers to register their interest so we can keep them updated - we have to put a release date on the system.

"We have therefore used the unconfirmed date as the best information available to us at the present time."

Nevertheless, HMV's unconfirmed date has been picked up by most other retailers, including Amazon, Play, ShopTo and GAME.

We wouldn't be surprised if they'd hit the nail on the head.

It seems like a game more suited to dark winter nights for me, so releasing it in the Spring is a bit strange...

September would be better, no? (I know it's later - but release time does affect sales)

Is anywhere in the UK doing preorders for the Collector's Edition yet? Usually pass on them but the Heavy Rain one looks very pretty. Hopefully it's not just at GAME as it'll be stupidly expensive just like the inFamous/U2/R&C CEs

What annoys me is that good reason or not, it's obviously a marketing ploy on HMV's part. The trick is all about setting the closest believable date, to spur on preorders on a game that could be 6 months or more away. Bonus points if you hook someone who doesn't know any better, and thinks that HMV are somehow getting it before other retailers.

Honestly, I find it difficult to believe that it would be particularly hard to implement a "TBC" option in the release date field on your website.

Edit: Oh, and the reason all the other websites have picked up the same date is because they have to keep up, or else lose preorders to a retailer that's getting it "earlier".

As HMV staff, I'll confirm that Sony haven't officially confirmed this date... but they HAVE sent us through official pre-order sleeves, which they don't usually bother doing until close to release.

Darkmoon: you mean the pandora's box collection for God of War? If memory serves the announcement didn't mention retailers so I'd imagine that it either isn't exclusive to a given retailer or distribution contracts are yet to be signed with retailers, I'd probably go with the latter as I can't find mention of it in any net based retailer.

Heavy Rain is going to be one of the many "must haves" this year, gonna get my pre-order in shortly for the collectors ed, don't usually do CEs but this one looks like it's actually goingi to be worth it.

@ Murton. Yup thats the edition I was refering to. Definitely a must have. It just annoys me that I can't pre order it just yet. I hope I don't miss it. Don't want to have to buy it off ebay though I did see someone listing it on ebay for pre order. I'd rather buy it from a known retailer.
