Hell's Highway looks '20% better than Gears'
Randy bigs up his Brothers.
Gearbox president Randy Pitchford reckons the visuals in Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway represent a "15-20 percent" leap over Epic's still rather foxy Gears of War.
Jabbering away enthusiastically this morning during a Ubidays demo of the WWII FPS, Pitchford justified his claim by pointing to the improvements both his studio and tech creator Epic have made to the engine since Marcus Fenix grunted onto 360 in late 2006.
"Hell's Highway is Unreal Engine 3, it's the engine that powered Gears of War," he reminded us. "Now since Gears of War, Epic's invested a lot in the technology and it's much better than what was in Gears. And we've worked a lot on this technology; so you're seeing fidelity that's about 15-20 percent higher than Gears of War."
Hell's Highway is the third instalment in the Brothers In Arms series, taking Operation Market Garden as its historical setting. It's out on 360, PS3 and PC this August. We'll let you know our detailed thoughts on the latest build soon. In the meantime, see if you agree with Randy's claims by checking out the brand new Hell's Highway footage direct from Ubidays.

I've been waiting for this one for so long I'm almost beyond caring.

To be honest though Brothers in arms games never interested me after COD are they any good? I haven't been blown away with the footage I've seen of Hells Highway.

I think he was refering to Gears one. Not that it matters anyway, its a pretty stupid statement to make in the first place.

You can blow a hole in the tower of the church, where the german machinegun guy is raining down bullets on you, but shoot that same rocket towards the rest of the church, the house next to it or even the small brick wall with another batch of germans behind it, and nothing happens.
And I you really want to make stuff realistic, drop the colored circles above the enemies' head. It looks stupid, takes away the surprise element and... well... you've done that a few times already. Suppress and flank is a good idea, using only that is kinda silly these days.
/continues waiting for bad company.

Er not too difficult. You just have to add some colour and tone down the specular shader a touch to achieve that. For all of gears great graphics. Someone on the epic team needed to be brave enough to say stop to all the washed out palettes.

Oi! you leave Jet Set Willy alone!

Sorry 'bout that - but at least I wasn't claiming gameplay was better than JetSet Willy!

that's alright then but remember, the words "better than" and "Jet Set Willy" do not belong in the same sentence unless it's "Jet Set Willy" THEN "better than"

Brighter colours, more lives, more variety in enemy types, more pickups, takes longer to complete and has more infamous attics than Hell's Highway will ever have. Already on wide release!

All is right again in the world, thank you...although I'd say 50%

Apparnetly the PS3 version is 20% better while the 360 just looks like Gears.
This will get fanboys going for sure!

Animation of the main character is lousy compared to say, Rainbow 6 and the rest didn't look any where near as good as Gears.

I was indeed referring to the first Gears. The latest trailer for this doesn't look anywhere close to the kind of fidelity that Gears exhibited (or maybe the compression rate of the Hells Highway trailer I saw was especially bad!)

Mind you, if they can get rid of that godawful texture pop-in, that would be a significant leap.

Even taking into account the resolution of the gameplay video it looks ropey as hell. Not to mention dull as dishwater.

Read the article with out your GOW glasses on you dicks. Epic and GB have invested heavily on the U3 engine and it is now 20% better 'fidelity' than what it was when GOW was first made. I don't see where it says its a 20% better game. Naturally its going to look better as the engine receives more TLC and I'm sure GOW2 will look 20% better than GOW.
Just for the record GOW blows dog, just like all the other stupid alien shooters out there. At least HH has a slight element of reality to it seeing its based on actual events.
