Heavenly Sword sequel gossip

Dev speaks in a telling way.

Those of you hoping Sony and Ninja Theory plan to revisit Heavenly Sword would have been encouraged by a launch event for Andy Serkis' new games industry networking organisation Games Eden on Wednesday, where a spokesperson for Ninja Theory repeatedly and perhaps revealingly referred to the developer's only PS3 project to date as "Heavenly Sword 1".

It's not the first hint we've had that Ninja Theory plans to make more than one Heavenly Sword game. Earlier this year, co-founder Tameem Antoniades said in a podcast that the original idea had been a "three-game story", and that the second phase of that is already written. Indeed, that there was "no reason why there shouldn't be a sequel".

Heavenly Sword - one of your favourite PS3 games to judge by the reader ratings on our gamepage - is an action game that follows red-haired fighter Nariko in a big old battle against naughty evildoers, upon whom she unloads quite a lot of spiffy and well-framed violence in glorious detail, and with good cut-scenes - to which Andy Serkis (of first paragraph fame, not to mention Eurogamer TV Show fame) obviously contributed.

"no reason why there shouldn't be a sequel"

Ooooo... this is gonna get dirty.
  • drumbaby #2 4 years ago

Wicked. I really liked the first one..it's a very solid foundation for an amazing sequel.
  • Darren #3 4 years ago

If they make the game longer than six hours, add a reason to actually replay it and learn how to use v-sync to minimise the horrendous tearing in the original then I'll consider buying the sequel, otherwise, no thanks. ;)
  • morriss #4 4 years ago

Not tearing and 1080i support would be nice for a sequel.
  • Zomoniac #5 4 years ago

Improve the enemy AI and make it longer and I'm sold. The first one was glorious. 1080p would be appreciated too.
  • Putty-Man #6 4 years ago

Opinions seem so divided on this game.
  • Triggerhappytel #7 4 years ago

The problem with most of these suggestions ^^, is that implementing them would probably make HS2 even more like God of War.

Regardless, it had a pretty extensive marketing campaign from Sony, and probably sold enough to warrant a sequel.

    Speak for yourself frod.
More of the same please. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
  • dominalien #9 4 years ago

Having completed the game AND got all the talismans (still don't know how I managed to finally get all three on The Heavenly Sword), I cannot argue with the 7 EG gave it.

But, the happiness and wonder the game filled me with is much higher than that ;-)
  • pjmaybe #10 4 years ago

Will this one be a bug-raddled tear-raddled mess with some good voice acting in it too?

    Peej
  • dominalien #11 4 years ago

@peej: bugs? Were there any bugs?
  • bdc #12 4 years ago

    Don't bother until:
    - you get 60fps
    - you get rid of tearing
    - you make it far less linear
    - you can jump

In fact, don't bother at all, they are making God of War III now, so you can go away with your overhyped rubbish.
  • dominalien #13 4 years ago

Jumping is overrated. I'll take a pretty girl over jumping any day.

If the could sort the scrappy presentation out they'd have a great game, they did a lot of things right, but there's no denying it was disappointing in a few, important ways. I enjoyed my brief time with it, mainly due to Serkis' performance and kai being a nutter. "Hee, shot you in the EYE!"
  • dominalien #15 4 years ago

Yeah, Kai was funny. "Or maybe I'll hit the weak spot for MASSIVE DAMAGE" (or something like that).
  • jlaakso #16 4 years ago

Heavenly Sword was precisely the kind of title that could benefit from a sequel. They have a lot of great stuff in there already. Just add a little more polish to the gameplay and get a more solid framerate and I'm sold.
  • steoc4 #17 4 years ago

Let us play Kai for the whole game and it will be amazing.

That already makes sense from a story point of view, and Twing Twang is one of the most satisfying methods of killing in any game so I'd be glad to see a game that expands on that.

The first Heavenly Sword was simply breathtaking, the graphics and cut-scenes of the game were better directed and technically more impressive then 90% of hollywood films... as amazing as that.
They could add more depth to gameplay (new weapons, combos, jump button etc..) make it longer (at least 10-12hrs), develop intresting puzzles (i cannot even call puzzles to that nonesense presented in the 1st)... fix nariko's hair, and create colossal monsters (a la god of war).
If they do that... my god what a game. Either way it will be an instant buy for me.

@farticusmaximus: you are of course entitled to your opinion, but other people thought different and they're entitled to their opinions as well. And please, don't be so patronising.
  • dominalien #20 4 years ago

@farticusmaximus: I thought it was a pretty good game. Am I fooling myself? You may think so, but I don't. As always, you are entitled to your opinion and let me have mine.

No comment about Apologie. I haven't had the pleasure. He is very enthusiastic about Heavenly Sword, that's true.
  • Apologie #21 4 years ago

    farticusmaximus

Shut up Apologie, it was shit and you know it.

    --------------------------

Well, after that sentence we can see that you are not a moron and deserve all consideration.

Hu? There are people who do *not* have Apologie on ignore????
  • Apologie #23 4 years ago

    @farticusmaximus

Frankly I've had a lot more fun playing Freecell than Heavenly Sword. Sure it looks nice but it's pure uninspired turgid gameplay and unexcusable quicktime sequences bored me stiff.

Hell I couldnt even enjoy it stoned and that's saying something

    ---------------------------

    typical fanboy comment.

Well, at least we agree on something farticusmaximus, God of War is indeed a superior game... but that doesen't make Heavenly Sword bad, in fact, it's a game with an enormous margin for improvement by maintaining the amazing graphics and dramatic athmosphere of the first..., and adding depth to gameplay.
  • phatb0y #24 4 years ago

Why are they even considering a sequel when theres another God Of War game on the way?

It doesn't take a genius to work out that GOW3 will trounce whatever the next Heavenly Sword has to offer in every aspect.

Heavenly sword was 'nice' in a purely aesthetic (if you could ignore the tearing) something-for-your-non-gaming-friends-and-family-to-coo-at sort of way, but other than that it was just another average-'em-up. Even Conan beat it on gameplay. Yes, Conan.
  • captainrentboy #25 4 years ago

What I find rather amusing and almost spooky was that my comment on this section was going to be... ''How long before Apologie turns up in here declaring the original Heavenly Sword to be the best game ever made, and that the sequel will be like a gift from the lord almighty, God himself! Either this or Killzone 2 will be the most fantastic game of the century.''
I was pretty darned close huh? I'm either psychic, or Apologie is terribly predictable.
I finished the original, and it was merely alllllright (Something reflected in the majority of its reviews) it was extremely repetitive, and even though I'm sure there was a fantastically deep combat system in there somewhere, tapping two buttons to the point of exhaustion seemed to do the trick too.
The cutscenes were bloody fantastic though, Serkis is a crazy man.
Saying that, I'm all for a sequel, just make sure you make it about twice the length or at least add a little replay value to it. Ohh and make it slightly more varied whilst you're at it.... That'll do.

Your Penis is 93.4% smaller than the average gerbils genitals, FACT!

You two must be pretty darn stupid... i never said that Heavenly Sword is the best game ever, i even mentioned that:
"They could add more depth to gameplay (new weapons, combos, jump button etc..) make it longer (at least 10-12hrs), develop intresting puzzles (i cannot even call puzzles to that nonesense presented in the 1st)... fix nariko's hair, and create colossal monsters (a la god of war)."
Is this the description of a perfect game??? maybe for someone stupid, like both of you.
  • Amoebalove #28 4 years ago

    @ Apologie

you may not have said best game ever but you did say

The first Heavenly Sword was simply breathtaking, the graphics and cut-scenes of the game were better directed and technically more impressive then 90% of hollywood films... as amazing as that.

and in no way are you going overboard with statement now are you?
