A NOTE ABOUT SCORING SYSTEMS:

A review is just the opinion of one person. If they want to give it a 1 or a 10, then that's fine.

having played halo 1 & 2 and they both got a high score and i tried to like them but to be honest they sucked well they were average 7/10 that would be my score. I didnt play halo 3 so i am not going to judge the game i am sure Bungie learned from halo 1&2 what people want. iam sure some people will like it and some people wont

I don't know if anyone else has asked this, but what about the four player co-op mode? I didn't see this feature mentioned in the review and I am very curious about it.

Top review, nice and balanced.
It sounds like the game is pretty much what I was expecting. It's not too different from Halo 2, but that in itself could be a complement :)

Because they did such a sterling job on the PC version of Halo 2.

Great review Rob, detailing as much as possible without dropping any spoilers at all. I have to admit that the text did come across at points as if it was leading towards a 9, but I appreciate that you were trying to keep the review as balanced as possible in the face of a huge amount of hype and the crazies (both pro and anti Halo). I'll never understand why some people insist upon having some sort of unobtainable mark, and if the fun outweighs any negatives by enough, then a 10 is well earned.

There is an argument for dropping scores so that people put more emphasis upon the content of a review than a number at the end - this review being a good example of why - but I know companies will always want that opportunity to quote a high score on their marketing or game boxes, and generally people have a tendency towards laziness. My personal thoughts are that an out-of-5 mark (stars, like movie reviews often use?) strikes the best balance between an 'at-a-glance' round-up, and encouraging people to read the actual text. Perhaps with some sort of 'award' for the marketing departments to print on their boxes to keep them happy.

Anyway, great review as I said. Pity about many of the fanboy morons cluttering up the thread with pointless put downs towards fellow members and whichever console they happen to have taken some misguided crusade against (yes, George Roper and MrsPacMan, I am definitely looking in your directions ...and laughing - not with you, but at you).

I'd also like to read about the 4 player co-op. Any chance of amending the review once the co-op is run through its paces over at EG towers?

Ah yes.

10/10 = It's as good as you hoped it would be. It will not disappoint you. It will give you the gaming experience you want, without compromise or glitches you care enough about to notice.

Oh course, to some it'll be utter guff and therfore bafflement, maybe even rage, will ensue. Fuck 'em. Enjoy your thing.

PS Glad this thread didn't get hijacked by trolls. I'm personally not a Halo fan but I'm very happy for those of you who are.

Re: 4 player co-op.

Just read the 1up review which says online 4 player co-op suffers from really bad lag at times:( However, I also discovered from gamespot that 4 player co-op is possible on split screen as well so a small :) for that.... hopefully they can sort the lag out post release...

Why, oh why am I stuck in a jungle with a laptop rather than in some civilized nation where these XBox 360 things can be bought?

Might have to grab a gun an RL roleplay Sierra 117 to satisfy my Halo urges.

Nice review, it's basically similar to other reviews I read. The game is better than the first two and while it doesn't reinvent the series, it does what it's supposed to do extremely well. I'll be getting it, it seems to be worth it.

I've been playing this the last two days and it aint bad. The single player is deffo a case of if it aint broken dont fix it - i have had a few feelings of deja vu playing it -not gonna mentioned any spoilers but there is a few set pieces that have been done in halo2 and the GFX is very halo 2.5 as mentioned in the review -

as a long time fan of the series i cant argue with the comments in the review but 10 ? hmmm...

@Latin:

"Serious" was probably too strong a word, however not addressing the degradation of game quality that was o-so apparent in the first and second installments is something I would have liked to see eliminated from the third (and final, in this story arc anyway) chapter.

It wasn't addressed according to the review itself... also as I mentioned, for it to look "good" rather then stunning is a bit of a downer. I knew what it looked like from videos, but was hoping it was better in-person a-la Call of Duty 4. For the flagship title for Microsoft, that's slightly disappointing given what Killzone and the like are up to over on "the other side of the fence".

I'm not saying it's a bad game by any stretch. I'll lap it up like the next fan, but the fact that issues with story and content haven't been fixed after three iterations of the game can get you the coveted "perfect" score annoys me.

I don't really like this kind of game very much. However, when a game gets a 10 it means, to me, "Even people who don't like this kind of game will like THIS game". It means that the game surpasses its genre to become something more than what it is. This ... this doesn't seem like that kind of game, judging by the review.

Fortunately my "halve all Xbox 360 scores because of the unbelievably awful build quality of the consoles" rule turns it into a 5. Crisis averted! (Otherwise it could be considered as good as Slitherlink, which is just laughable.)

If I thought the first two games were 8/10's, am I likely to think Halo 3 is a similar score?

Well having read the review at about nine PM, but not really had the time to read the 284/5 comments. From what I have read lots of people have been complaining about the 10/10 score.

Well to be honest Bioshock got 10/10 and it had its issues. Yet the majority of the great stuff in the game outweighed the bad by a long shot. The same goes with this review.
Thats my view anyhow and I'll be looking forward to playing it whenever my Legendary Edition pops throw the door.

I find the 10/10 is perfect discussion really interesting. Because those of you who think 10 should never be awarded because that is perfection, what does that make 9? I mean you're talking nine tenths of the absolute perfect game, what game is even that good.

If 10/10 represented perfection, rather than a top game in it's field, all the very top games at the moment would be down at 7 at best, because even the best games have flaws.

Game scores are basically rubbish and you all know it. Yet loads of you skip through the review and read that first. Mentalists the lot of you! ^_^

10/10 means there are no faults the reviewer can find.

Now read the review of Halo 3 and you will spot were it says the later levels are not in the same quality of the first ones, that alone would tilt the game to a 9/10 and you will find more complains (face textures being from Halo 2, etc ...).

Getting a 10/10 is not the issue, the issue is the review says "well its almost without flaws and here is the list of issues I have with the game" and then lands a 10/10 ... THAT is what a lot of people have a issue with.

Also PS3 fanboys do not be so happy, despite being flawed Halo 3 is released and none of your "great games" have yet to be released ... at least Xbox 360 have AAA games as the PS3 have a list of AAA games that may or may not be good (I ALWAYS get a kick of seeing Killzone 2 in those list, like I forgotten the "Halo Killer" PS2 Killzone).

Good review, pleasantly surprised with how highly this is getting rated too accross the board, thats all there is to it 360 is where its all happening for the best games this year from exclusive to multiplatform(and likely the best versions by current trends).

Another 10 for a 360 game, with PGR4(which I think might be another one to get that mark) and Mass Effect(not sure about it, admittedly I havent been following the progress closely, hope its another gem though) still to come, its great to see so many games live up to expectations(infact I dont think theres been a major disappointment of any of the games Ive been anticipating since last years E3). I dont see why anyone should be complaining too much about next gen now... on 360 atleast :) plenty of great games around, thats enough for me as truely innovating/groundbreaking games by their nature are very rare indeed and not always great. It almost seems like its an excuse to discredit these days, what are they really expecting to see that hasnt been done before on a smaller scale/lesser hardware? an example "groundbreaking AI? pah AI was in space invaders and it was more impressive cos I say so".

Its a great game which deserves the attention in their eyes(its a must have for them this year hence the 10), get over it! even if you disagree(if you play it probably shaking your head at the title screen to convince yourself of something before youve even gave it a fair chance and played it) even though most haters had no intention of playing it at all anyway.

The haters(namely a mixture of Nintendo/Metroid fanboys, Playstation erm Killz...*nah surely not* -just Sony fanboys and Half-Life PC fanboys) are as predictable as ever... but before we complain its all ok because its only trolling if you're saying Halo(or any critically acclaimed title seen as important to the Devilbox360 by teh M$ who are evil, anyone else notice that pattern?) is better than *insert videogame here*(btw did you know? - owning a 360 or borrowing the more likely scenario isnt a liscense to troll!). Haters need to be heard, its important because they know better and need to tell you what you should be playing instead... if you disagree or maybe criticise their preference - prepare for a tantrum!.

So yeah it never really works on anyone, if they are interested in the game you can hate all you like, shout overrated as many times as you like. They will probably buy it and not even read your posts and probably enjoy it too, everyone wins... cept you trolls. ;)

In all honesty I wouldn't have rated Bioshock anything above an 8. I enjoyed it thouroughly but it just didn't take me to that pure gaming zen that some games have done in the past.

I wouldn't rate Halo 1/2 above an 8 either but I really want to believe that this one will make me grin and think 9 to myself.

Review certainly didn't read like a 10, I was quite suprised to see that when I was finished. I'm scared shitless about the last level now though.

All things considered, this wednesday I'm picking up my legendary edition and going right into the campaign with two friends. I'm looking forward to the replay function so much that I would rather stop after the first level and watch it instead of playing through it in one go.

Sorry to pick on you but... do you really do that ever? :D lol "this ok, errmm.... 7 no go on then... 8 :D"

I just know when a game is engaging, fun ect and compare to what Ive played before like "this is great, more fun than Half Life 2 even although alot different" or something like that... even then I try not to do that(after the first impressions early on) because I want to like every game I buy, Im not made of money and cant afford to buy consoles and games I didnt really rate from the get go.

The review makes the game sound like Halo 1. Like they dropped everything that Halo 1 fanboys perceived as 'bad' in Halo 2 and focused on what people enjoyed in the first and second game. Good thing for fans and quite possibly the best thing they could have done.

BUT, it doesn't quite sound like the game is deserving of the 10 you've given it and considering your previous 'controversial' ratings of the Halo series the review doesn't quite ring true. Is the score there just to feed the mob? In this case I don't think a score was needed at all, the review read like a 8 as nothing mentioned in the review really painted the picture of a truly excellent game.

Compare this review to the review of Bioshock.

There does appear to be a trend at the moment towards big releases getting big scores, then us playing the game and collectively ending up slightly disappointed.

I guess either my expectations are too high or some of the scores have been 1 or 2 points too much.

Bioshock certainly wasn't a 10/10 game for me, quite honestly it was a bit of a chore after the Sander Cohen level. The earlier "I wouldn't have reviewed it that highly" disclaimer doesn't really cut the mustard as an explanation for me in all honesty. Perhaps for the big games in might be worth a 2nd reviewer auditing the score ?

I guess I'm just a little sceptical at the moment, this review did read like an 8 or 9 and I got burnt with EG's Halo 2 review.

Presumably a Eurogamer 10/10 means its anywhere between 91% and 100% on a percentage based review system, so rather than people jumping to conclusions about it being the perfect game that can't be bettered maybe you should (a) read the (very well written) review and (b) play the game to decide where you think it comes within that range.

It is a nice shot in the arm on the gamerankings board tho for Halo.

Whoa - this was unexpected. For a game that doesn't astound at any single thing, but delivers a smooth, well-rounded package that is excellent but not outstanding at everything it does, a 10 is unexpected from EG.

Anyway, good going - thanks for recognizing the potential of plain old FUN versus the existential deliberations that every other shooter these days feels obligated to provide.

to comment on some of the comments: to me BioShock actually is an absolute 10/10. but then again I greatly enjoy the atmosphere and story, even if the gameplay isn't that "advanced"
I don't really see the problem here, it looks like the majority of reviews (97% atm) disagrees with the angry people here who just have their own particular/peculiar tastes and preferences. that goes for BioShock & Halo 3 I might add

In a world with justice, this would indeed be the new better than Halo. Tagline really shoulda been better than halo, tho'.

Trousers full of wasps are far too kind for the ubiquitous score-bitching tard procession. You want cybernetic wasps like the things in City of Lost Children, modified to inject, oh, I dunno, something really painful. Malignant tumour cells would be a start. Since there's no realistic hope of convincing EG to drop scores altogether, how about at least a 1-5 scale with no half points? The old 1-10 scores could be fairly trivially converted with a blanket ruling on whether to round up or down, or just by allowing .5s on pre-overhaul scores. Still wouldn't be as satisfactory as just ditching them so people have to read and respond to the actual words or piss off, imo. You'd think reviewers, of all people, would be most sympathetic to the idea, for obvious reasons, but the reasons the editorial overlords would never consider it are equally plain.

Solid review, anyway. Probably best summed up by the concluding 'it's a game about shooting aliens'. Not much for me there - what occasional interest I can muster in FPS is limited to the quasi-intellectual Looking Glass descended cul-de-sac these days - but it sounds like a game that sets its sights on doing one thing really well and nails it. I enjoyed most of God Hand, a game about punching people, so there's certainly potential merit in that. Bungie-itis falling off towards later levels does seem a little vexing, but maybe we just have to assume by now that's an endemic problem in the way the studio works. I'd actually call less than best-on-platform visuals a plus point, if they're the price to be paid for performance without glitches, but I'm probably in a minority on that.
