Halo 3: ODST tops UK charts News

PC PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Tom Bramwell

28 September, 2009

Halo 3: ODST is top of the All-Formats Top 40 chart this week following its 22nd September launch on Xbox 360.

Tuesday was an unusual slot, but apparently that didn't put off shoppers, with 64 per cent of the game's first-week sales going through in its first 24 hours.

According to data compilers Chart-Track, however, the Rookie hasn't quite got the beating of the Master Chief, whose last outing in Halo 3 enjoyed the fourth-best first-week sales for a single-format release in recorded history. ODST managed 12th.

Elsewhere, Professor Layton and Pandora's Box puzzled nobody by taking second spot ahead of last week's number one, Need for Speed: Shift. Layton's last game, The Curious Village, saw its sales go up by 36 per cent, too - enough to bump it to 18th.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 was another new arrival at seven, while NCsoft's ambitious MMORPG Aion swept in at 11, making it the highest-placed PC exclusive.

Further down there was a new entry for MySims Agents at 16, and re-entries for Madden (32), the immutable LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga (33) and Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades (36).

With apologies to games like Risen and Beatorator, next week's number one will be FIFA 10. See this week's top 40 below.

I'm loving ODST, it has reminded that the Halo mechanics are overall better than COD's. I just wish my mates saw it the same way as all they ever want to do is play Gears or COD!

It's good ODST took the top spot after all the talk of it not being value for money. IMO it's the best Halo game since the original, having a better story than 2 and 3 combined even if it is a shorter game overall. Not had chance to play firefight yet as not many on my friends list ahve the game yet and not that keen playing with strangers.

ODST is, as far as I'm concerned, the best FPS since the first Halo game.

The pacing, level design and atmosphere are just perfect and even using the Halo 3 engine it looks lovely, especially at night in New Mombassa.

Firefight is the icing on the cake though. Stupendous fun and will be keeping me busy for many months to come.

I heard ODST sold 2 million on the first day! That's one hell of an achievement and Bungie deserve every accolade they get.

"So nowhere near the numbers for Halo3 then, gamers are getting bored with the Halo universe, Bungie please make something new!! "

So it trounces most games sales in a day, and just because it sold less than Halo 3, which sold bazillions, that means gamers are bored with Halo? Ok.... :|

Irongiant, it's top of the charts and supposedly sold 2 million copies in one day, that isn't going to make Bungie want to move onto anything else, if it had sold like 6 copies then you'd have a point.
Like a few of the posters above me I actually enjoyed ODST more than Halo 3, there was very little level backtracking and it let you play, in quick succession, each of the best type of action set piece you would expect in any Halo title. And played on Heroic it wasn't particularly short either :/

I agree, it distilled all the things I like about Halo into one game. Add firefight into the mix and it's my GOTY at the mo.

Iron giant, may I introduce you to fail....oh I see you two have already met..........

ODST so far has taken the best of Halo and Halo 2 and combined them into a greatest hits type package, the inclusion of Firefight rounds of the title and tbh for £30 i think it also represents good value for money.

Heroic was about an 8 hr play through for me (took my time exploring) and legendary on co-op with my buddies will be fun, not to mention the hours i will sink into firefight.

Bungie have at last recaptured that wining formula of 30 seconds of fun over and over, they lost their way with 3 with too many grand set pieces and only one way t odo things. They should have concentrated on the tight short battles with multiple ways to complete the scenario which they have done in ODST and which make it a great game.

WIN.

Good stuff, it's a fantastic game. I wasn't expecting it be this good. Great story, the pacing is tremendous and it's steeped in atmosphere. Love the music. Voice acting is top notch as well. As fans of the game seem to agree, it's all the good things about Halo distilled into a pretty compelling campaign. And no Flood.

5 hours to finish it? wtf? Where's the joy is racing through this? Took me 3 evenings on Heroic, easily 12 hours or more as I was exploring at my lesiure and playing cautiously. Firefight's the icing on the cake, so much fun. GOTY for me.

It thoroughly deserves top spot, it’s a brilliant game for many of the reasons above so I won’t repeat them, though I will repeat a love in for Firefight, it’s awesome, that security level is a bitch though! I loved horde mode, but this has quickly overtaken it in my estimation.

"Saying that, millions have been happy to shell out for 'more of the same' for years. Take Half-Life - you might as well charge my credit card for the next ten years because I'm buying regardless. "

In the case of Halo and HL all of them have been worth the money. When a game is good, you don't always have to change a lot especially if the game is thick on gameplay.

Well I tried ODST and got very bored within a couple of hours. I think I was last seen doing the second flashback. First of all it's crazily repetitive in the 'hub'. Secondly, it's just boring now. My mistake buying it in the first place really.

ODST is a great package and shows what powerful exclusives msoft have this gen, which although they may not get the critical plaudits like LBP,etc.. they do sell in their millions and have the popular vote among most gamers. I expect L4 D2,FORZA3 and odst to outsell every single sony exclusive worldwide this xmas. After all the GT5 hype, the only exclusive the ps3 has that i will bother with is the excellent uncharted, while the 360 has 3 must buys.disappointing

Why would anyone from Britain pay $60 for a game? I must have missed the exchange rate bouncing back to make that worthwhile, I usually shop around and pay in sterling, that seems mostly appropriate what with me living in the UK and all that.

Not disputing the fact that ODST is a great package - given by the comments on its release, it seems to be something good. Yet, deducting that 360 has better exclusives because of ODST selling millions, is pushing it. I think it sells millions because a very large part of 360 owners precisely have that console, because of allegiance to the Halo-brand. That group will buy any Halo being Metacritic'd above 60 - this one seems to be quite special, so a even larger portions buys into it.

You mention L4D2 - I hardly know the game, except that it is about Zombies and apparently quite good. I do not believe sells a system. You mention Forza 3, while undoubtedly a great game, it will not necessarily convert potential buyers to 360, since GT has the bigger name and will come to PS3. And you mention Halo which I discussed.

You might be right that this Christmas the three you mention will have higher sales than any of Sony's exclusives. I believe the reason to be that 360 owners really have not a lot more AAA to buy this year. PS3 owners have a lot to look forward to though and I believe that will be reflected in end-of-year sales of the platform...

Let me guess 2010 year of the ps3 and gt5, an absolute joke imo

Best description of ODST I've heard so far was that it's "Halo with a System Shock atmosphere".

The flashbacks are classic Halo and the New Mombasa hub with its thick atmosphere, log-hunting, and slightly-sinister-yet-chirpy AI are where Halo meets System Shock/Bioshock. Great atmosphere and the most consistently good Halo game since... well ever really.

what you going on about?!! ODST is a fantastic game, for example although it may not look as good as Killzone 2 it out classes it in the gameplay department.

The game is well worth anyones money and can be bought for £29.99 online and £34.99 is stores which makes it cheaper than most titles latley.

It would be nice to know, from the fellow video-gamers who whine about Halo ODST actually bought/played it. Halo has this strange aura - atracting people who don't like sci-fi; FPS's; online gaming; Master Chiefs..., though they all need to say it..., twice, in every Halo thread. Sometimes is funny, sometimes is not.
I just hope my fun with the game doesn't bother anyones bad vibe.

Having 'Halo' in a topic title is a traditional way to lure and weed out the stupids. We see them appearing here in droves, unable to engage their tiny brains before shambing here and posting the very first moronic thought that oozes lazily across their synapses.

The Anthony_Daniels, Spankies, El-Devs, semitopes and other members of the Moronis species, once out of their natural habitat are easily spotted and marked with a distinctive red negative number which allows other moron spotters to ignore them and continue searching for unmarked examples to catalog.

The irony of the plight of this endangered species, is that while the Moronis Fantardia is out scavenging for scraps in threads they do not belong in, there is a wealth of wholesome conversation that they could be contributing to back on their home territory. They are also far less likely to be torn to shreds by the far more capable inhabitants of the foreign thread.

I didnt compare ODST to killzone 2 now did I?

If you are talking about the boring campaign being good then you are wrong. I already said that the multiplayer content is excusable.

Those of you saying some crap about ignore lists and whatever else are so irrelevant its shameful. The typical douches who come online and act as if anyone commenting on a topic falls under some stereotype. Think for yourself and stop commenting on other peoples comments... so stupid. What exactly is your purpose? To cleanse the world of comments you don't like? Wonder if you have ever expressed your own opinion before instead of judging others on theirs.

I also have said I can understand that the gameplay is great for some people. I still think you have to be defective to like the campaign but the mp of halo 3 is there plus extras.
