Halo 3 devs next for LiveText News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

5 December, 2007

Doing anything on Friday afternoon? Of course you're not. So why not come along and interview some of the people who made Halo 3?

Yep, following on from chats with Peter Molyneux and Evan Wells, this week we're happy to welcome Bungie Studios production director Jonty Barnes and writing lead Frank O'Connor to our LiveText interview booth.

Both men will be here from 3pm GMT on Friday, 7th December, to take your questions about Halo 3 and anything else you might like to ask them. You will be able to submit questions through moderators and then watch their answers bounce back without having to refresh the web-page at all.

"I'm really looking forward to being grilled by Eurogamer readers on Friday. When I lived in the UK, it was one of my favourite gaming sites," said Barnes, implying that it's all gone wrong for us. "It always had the reputation as being hard yet fair. I expect nothing less from its readers on Friday!"

Frank O'Connor added: "I have been studying European culture carefully since finding out about this interview and I believe that the authoritative piece on the continent and its people, National Lampoon's European Vacation, will be an excellent preparation for me. I have no worries about the types of question these Aussies and Kiwis have planned for us."

So join Jonty, Frank, Super Moderating Hero and all your friends on Friday at 3pm GMT when we'll find out once and for all whether they wear hats, what colour they think snakes should be, and anything else you can think up.

Are we allowed to complain about Halo 3 when we're talking to them? It'll be hard to think of anything else to say, really.

Might ask them why all three Marathon games were vastly superior to all three Halo games...

Alternatively you could point out what it was good in Marathon and found lacking in Halo or make some other constructive, non-trolling, criticism.

I'm already pre-ashamed at the sort of daft attention seeking internet tedium that we'll see on Friday.

Yeah, I doubt I'll be able to be here at that time too. :( Annoying as these guys seem like a laugh and I'd love to ask a couple of questions.

LMAO, some of you are so precious. If you took ten seconds to look at my gamertag you'd notice I've played plenty of Halo 3 and absolutely adore the multiplayer. Fact remains that as a single player FPS it's 8/10 at best and doesn't deserve the massive circle-jerk it gets, and the mouth-foaming delirium on EG comments sections when you happen to point that out are proof enough.

And miiguel, if you are geek enough to have played all three Marathon games, then I'm happy for you. You've seen Bungie's best work. Incidentally, I never said Halo "sux". I said the Marathon games were better, and I stand by my opinion on that. I think the Marathon games are oft-ignored works of gaming genius that were a long way ahead of their time, whereas Halo and future iterations are by-the-numbers mundane shooters (albeit with an okay story) that have offered little that hasn't been done a thousand times before.

But hey guys, if you want to keep taking what I say out of context and working your way to a high blood pressure, go ahead. As I said, I'm a big fan of Halo 3's multiplayer.

Halo 3 is simply one of the best games ever, as both a single and a multiplayer experience. The single player is one of the best ever, out of any game.

I have a hunch that if Halo were just a simple multi-plat game, with no major advertisement/support from MS (or any other big corp.), most of its detractors would like it better (iit wouldn't have the same support and success it has too).
It's just a hunch, though.

My opinion of the game is that it is one of the FPSes that gave me more pleasure to play, alone and co-op (not much of a fan of run'n'gun MP). I just like it, very, very much.
I know it's cool to say Marathon is the best, and stuff, but is somewhat the same to say Joy Division is the best - yeah it's good, but I wont be hearing that today. It wouldn't make sense. To me.

Here is an idea. Its a bit out of left field and might get me burned at the stake, but lets give it a shot. Here it comes, bite a cushion.

How about, regardless of your feelings about the Halo series, you all think of constructive non-trolling questions to pose?

Yes, I realise its a bit of a new concept, but it will...

1. Be more likely to get answers.
2. Make us all look like clever thoughtful gamers instead of a bunch of trolls.

Whether you like something or not isn't important. Being able to say WHY you do or don't like it is what seperates the adults from the kids. Say something profound and insightful and maybe they will even hire you at some future date.

Thing is though, I don't say Marathon is the best to try and be cool; I say it because when I first played it on my Performa 475 in about 1995, after swapping six floppy disks in and out, it blew me away. It was light years ahead of anything around at the time, and even now I go back to it on Aleph One and can spend an evening happily playing any of them. Granted, there are a lot of bandwagon jumpers who have never played it but are quite happy to use it as a stick to bash Halo with, but that isn't what I'm doing. I will grant you this however, the first time I played Halo: CE (the PC version), I switched it off and uninstalled it after three levels. The enemies were lacking in any kind of variety, the environments were all exactly the same, and the gameplay didn't fit with what I was used to. That's not to say I hated it, I just couldn't see where the hype was coming from. The same is partially true of 3; despite being a good game, the marketing and hype machine has taken over (and I say this as someone sitting at a desk looking at a bottle of "Mountain Dew Game Fuel").

I suppose I am looking at Marathon with a hint of rose-tinted nostalgia, but we all do with games that defined experiences for us. In my humble opinion, Bungie went from genre-defining to mediocre when they sold out to MS and made Halo

No. But you asked for reasons why I didn't like it something, and that's what I've provided. It doesn't necessarily need to be a criticism, I think.
