Halloween special on Virtual Console News

Wii Retro News by Tom Bramwell

31 October, 2008

Nintendo has updated the Virtual Console with three Halloweeny games for the NES.

They are Devil World, Castlevania III and Ghost 'N Goblins, all of which cost 500 Wii Points, which is approximately GBP 3.50 / EUR 4.50.

The latter duo need no introduction (and don't really need buying either, since you can get the SNES Super Castlevania IV and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts for 800 Points each), but Devil World might have passed you by.

Originally released 24 years ago this month, it's a Pac-Man-esque maze game designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, in which players control a cutesy dragon who collects crucifixes on a quest to kill the devil. In hindsight, it's rather amazing it never came out in the USA.

We can think of better Halloween-related ways to spend tree-fitty, but we can think of nothing amusing upon which to conclude this paragraph.

Maybe he's referring to the Wii market in general, and not just the hardware?

... you can tell it's going to be a slow Friday for me....

I bought Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts for the GBA a few years ago thinking it'd be a nice nostalgia trip. I also thought I'd be able to get further in the game than I did when I was younger. Nope, still bastarding hard.

I've decided to get a Wii for my mum, and leave it up there for family gatherings.

I'll only get pissed off I have it here while the best announcements are these.

It's been bad enough owning a PSP the past year. God of War, and.... Crisis core (not bothered)... and an empty online store where they seem to go out of their way NOT to release any games.

Great.

For fuck's sake, at £3.50 for games that old you should all be playing them on MAME for free.

Another snoozefest of titles. I'm sitting on 1700 points on the hope that something decent from the SNES or N64 will come out. This is about the second month of waiting now.

That's a bit of a strange thing to say, since Super Castlevania is a fancy remake of the ORIGINAL, entirely linear Castlevania, and not the third game, which had a variety of paths and characters to choose from...

Sadly the whole World Of Goo thing is a developer decision to seek a publisher in Europe, rather than Nintendo's fault. However it I was Nintendo Europe I would've fought to have it on WiiWare as it's perfect for the form.

but THAT'S FUCKING ILLEGAL, for fuck's sake. Just because piracy of old games is piss easy doesn't mean it's any more legal than piracy of new games (or films, or music, or anything else) - or would you respond to news about a new 360 game with "for fuck's sake, £40 for something you can just torrent for free"?

anyway this isn't such a bad lineup i don't think. devil world is an overlooked classic, castlevania 3 is one of the best in the series and ghosts'n goblins is pretty great as well, albeit bastard hard. if you're the sort who's just waiting for the remaining few big-name titles to come out and won't touch anything else, that's your loss.

Hmmm... if you download a US ROM that is only copyrighted under US law, is it still illegal in the UK? Anyway, for games released in that era, we only have to wait another 30 years to be able to play them legally, as UK copyright law only protects them for 50 years.

yep. international copyright agreements and all that.

as for the 50 year thing, that means these games are still the property of nintendo/capcom/konami/whoever for another thirty years and they can do whatever the hell they want with them until that point (and why shouldn't they, they created them). just be thankful the games industry hasn't followed the lead of music and film, where reissues of an old album or movie tend to cost the same as a new release, give or take a couple of quid.
