Guitar Hero to become reality TV show? News

PC PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii MMO
News by Tom Bramwell

8 May, 2009

Activision is in discussions about turning Guitar Hero into a TV show or concert tour and bringing Call of Duty to the silver screen.

That's according to a Reuters report citing "people familiar with the discussions".

Speaking to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick on Thursday, Reuters got nothing on the film, but he did say Guitar Hero "might make for a good TV show or a good concert tour".

Reuters also mentions the possibility of a World of Warcraft movie, although Blizzard has previously confirmed that and discussed it at some length.

They should make a trilogy all starring Captain Price, starting with The Great War, then WW2 and err... Modern Warfare. He drank from the Holy Grail and, similar to the games, is immortal, and battles Hitler on a 300mph glacier that's heading straight for Britain.

...not even EA had this level of stupidity.

Although I would probably watch a film based on the growth of Captain Price's epic facial hair.

They could very easily combine the two and call it Guitar Hero: World Tour of Duty

The premise is that an online game of World Tour of Duty is arranged between Captain Price (on drums), al-Asad (Vocals), Victor Zakhaev (Bass) and Sergeant Paul Jackson (Lead Guitar). The song chosen is Satch Boogie by Joe Satraini on expert and the winner is the one who has the best percentage score at the end of the song.

The twist is that there is a nuclear device hidden in the Lead Guitar, and Jackson is informed of this just after the start of the song and told that if he fails to complete the song, it will detonate. Sergeant Jackson is pretty good on lead, but the extra pressure of knowing this leads him missing key notes.......

.....will he make it? Or will he die in a horrific nuclear explosion?

Wasn't the orginal CoD just a rip off of Saving Private Ryan though?

So this would make it a film of a game based on a film.

Hehe. I kind of wonder how the lowly cow became so synonymous with continuing to exploit a franchise. I mean, its not like literally milking a cow is viewed with the same degree of scorn. I can just imagine corn farmers viewing dairy farmers down their nose, saying "God, talk about milking it".

I mean, why don't we level the same critique at hens laying eggs, or even bees making honey for that matter. Poor cows get all the flak... or don't, which is kind of my point.... I think.

and when you think about mankind pretty much made cows into the milk producing machines that they are today in some cases infections can occur that are life threating unless cows are milked because of they way they are bred (based on some random fact i heard that may be wrong) so ipsofactso Activision need to milk the guitar hero and COD franchises or they would get sick and die.

Ok, so a friend read my post and explained the origins of the term (his grandfather was a dairy farmer).

So, when you milk a dairy cow you cause it to produce milk for much longer than would occur naturally (well after its calf has been born and taken away). Now you have to keep milking the cow for a time, because otherwise it would suffer discomfort due to the pressure of the milk being produced not being removed.

However, if you continue to milk the cow for a prolonged period and don't allow it to stop producing milk, damage can be caused such as sensitivity or infection. Hence the term milking the cash cow, refers to over milking a franchise to the point that you will actually cause harm to the franchise in the longterm.

So my previous question about "why would you not keep making games if people are buying them" ignores the possibility that you would harm the franchise by going for the short term gain (and as others have suggested, people may very suddenly develop a bad opinion of the franchise even though they happily bought the previous iteration).

So we've all learned something today :)
