Guitar Hero: Metallica spotted

Inevitable, really.

Clever people with eyes have uncovered evidence that Metallica will be the next band to get its very own Guitar Hero game.

Buried deep in an Activision SEC filing was confirmation of its existence, according to GameSpot, alongside a promise it would be out before the end of March next year.

Metallica will follow in the footsteps of Aerosmith, which gives its Guitar Hero solo performance sometime next month.

Presumably the format will be much the same; play as the band from grass roots to stadiums, tackling most of the back catalogue as well as other songs that inspired Metallica along the way.

Metallica was formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich, who incidentally went on to lead the publicised fight against Napster at the turn of the century.

Anything up to and including the Black album, fantastic. Everything else = big bag of meh.
  • Grump #2 4 years ago

The Black Album on it's own would be the best thing ever.
  • Rowlsten #3 4 years ago

Suppose they've gotta make up the lost cash from all those pirates.... arrrrr
  • spongebob #4 4 years ago

Why Metallica and Aerosmith? Both are uninteresting. Genre theme would so much better. Guitar Hero: Blues, Guitar Hero: Metal, Guitar Hero: Progressive Rock.. and so on. Or some classics like Guitar Hero: Led Zeppelin or Guitar Hero: Rolling Stones.. I don't know. Anything but Aerosmith or Metallica.

lars ulrich is the biggest prick on the rock scene

and Saint Anger is a steaming pile on shite

    but, master of puppets plz
  • jglover4 #6 4 years ago

People who want the Black album are clearly more into pop than metal; it's worse than St. Anger. Although both are vastly inferior to anything from the Cliff Burton era and before.
  • OllyJ #7 4 years ago

there won't be enough memory on any console to load the snare sound from St Anger.
  • [menace] #8 4 years ago

At people making comments: say something new dammit.. You are too predictable!

*Jumps into the big mosh pit of Metallica elitism*

I gotta say, Master of Puppets is their best album. Unless you count S&M which is insanely good.
  • brainbird #10 4 years ago

    Wishlist thread?
    Make Guitar Hero: Motörhead!
  • BiscuitBase #11 4 years ago

I want a death metal guitar hero.
  • Wickerman #12 4 years ago

I'm with Fallen_Angel on this one - IMO S&M is the best of their work (perhaps because it was my first introduction to their works). After listening to it, all the rest just sound... rough (and not in a good way). With the exception of Enter Sandman (always preferred the original over the S&M version).

*waits patiently for Guitar Hero/Rock Band:Guns 'N Roses*
  • KingOfSpain #13 4 years ago

Why not do it as DLC, makes so much more sense!
  • OldMan #14 4 years ago

One of the few bands whose signifcance may actually justify something like this. For those who don't fancy making ideology out of genre conventions, there's quite a bit to enjoy from both the thrash period and their commercial years.

I hate to say this, but I really do like St. Anger -- their most raw, honest, and direct statement in years. Indeed my only problem with it is that the sound production is so demanding on your stereo.
  • MBar #15 4 years ago

    Guitar Hero: Jimmy Eat World?

In fact, nevermind, I want them on Rock Band so I can pretend I can play the drum bits.

    Guitar Hero: Queen?

    Guitar Queen?

  • Fab4 #17 4 years ago

Screw Metallica...I wonder how many songs Lars Ulrich covered illegally, as he was starting his way up the music money ladder. 2-faced bastard!
  • jidnffc #18 4 years ago

Meh, limiting yourself to one band just doesn't seem sensible to me, but then again I don't like Aerosmith or Metallica so I guess I'd feel differently if it was a band I was a fan of.
Still, why is there no AC/DC songs in GH or RB??
  • Beano #19 4 years ago

GH:M is fine by me... as long as Metallica's songs won't become exclusive to the GH franchise. I would like new Metallica song packs for Rock Band.
  • black2 #20 4 years ago

I'm with jidnffc, it's a bit limiting. Surely only fans of the respective bands will buy these editions?

Not saying they don't exist but they're crossing fingers for crossover. I'm not bothered about either of these bands despite being a massive GH fan, so I'll pass. I think GH is best with a song you know really well.
  • Grump #21 4 years ago

Guitar Hero: Gypsy Kings would be awesome. and mega hard too.

  • Beano #22 4 years ago

No... Guitar Hero: Weird Al would be a monster hit!
  • JonFE #23 4 years ago

I've been playing GH3 and RB a lot lately and I'd welcome this addition wholeheartedly, as long as the included playlist insists that Load/Reload and St.Anger do not exist; it's not that difficult, I do it all the time :)
  • Grump #24 4 years ago

    I was being serious : P
  • bitesize #25 4 years ago

where's the music games for non-rock lovers? where's my "turntable hero: scratch perverts" game? "sampler hero: dj shadow"? erm, "glitchy noise hero: autechre"?

there are people that aren't into hair metal who like games too!
  • Lemming81 #26 4 years ago

Trying to claw some money back after Napster left them homeless, I'll bet...

...ok I couldn't keep that up without laughing.
  • AcidSnake #27 4 years ago

How about Guitar Hero: Megadeth Vs Metallica...
With the final showdown being between Mechanix and The Four Horsemen...
  • Lemming81 #28 4 years ago

@bitsize: But we'd rather forget those gamers exist. Reach for the lasers, safe as fuck and all that....;P

Although being serious for a moment, I think the idea of everyone wanting to be Rock Stars is more ingrained in our culture and childhood/teen years than wanting to be a DJ. That's like aspiring to be in an accountant.
  • jamie_fear #29 4 years ago

"I want a death metal guitar hero."

    +1
  • bitesize #30 4 years ago

Reach for the lasers, safe as fuck and all that....;P

you've never heard of any of the people in my post have you?

i think you're underestimating the rise of dj culture in the last 20 yrs to be honest. that said, i certainly don't want to be in an accountant...

  • Leolian #31 4 years ago

Rock band metallica album would trump this by miles. Also need some queen songs.
  • spongebob #32 4 years ago

Hear, hear, bitesize! I'll drink to that idea.
  • sanctusmortis #33 4 years ago

@bitesize: erm, Music by Codemasters, MTV Music Generator, On Da Mic... there were tons on PS1/PS2. They sold shite, so nobody makes new ones.
  • johnnybrn #34 4 years ago

    Bitesize,

Didnt codemasters bring out a couple of those type of games for the PS1 years ago, I remember them to be quite fun but got boring real quick. Ultimately though its much cooler to be a rock star than a superstar DJ, because no matter how hard you try a keyborad will never be cool.

Fair play if they get its right, do you think thats what next for the franchise?

Rock Band - now with synth?

  • BulletTheory05 #35 4 years ago

I used to hate Lars until I watched Some Kind of Monster.

Now it's known to me that Het is the tosser, and Lars is actually an okay guy.
  • Azazel #36 4 years ago

    Guitar Hero: Dinosaur Jr?

    ....

    No?
  • bitesize #37 4 years ago

erm, Music by Codemasters, MTV Music Generator, On Da Mic... there were tons on PS1/PS2. They sold shite, so nobody makes new ones.

they weren't rhythm action games tho were they? music generator was like a cutdown sequencer not a game. never played the other 2, mind...

there was beatmania on ps1, which was mint.

Ultimately though its much cooler to be a rock star than a superstar DJ, because no matter how hard you try a keyborad will never be cool.

dj's don't play keyboards tho. usually keyboard players do that...

  • johnnybrn #38 4 years ago

    @ Bitesize,

Ok you win if you want to be pendantic. The fact of the matter is that it does not make for an exciting post-pub play with your mates game (IMO) - clever and tricky for sure but more of niche than mass market.

The plus the fact that there arent to many dj hero's compared to guitar heros, Paul Oakendfold, Chemical Bor, Prodigy now Pendulum come to mind. Great music tho.
  • bitesize #39 4 years ago

i'm not trying to be pedantic, a dj is a pretty long way from a keyboard player!

from your posts, it doesn't really seem like you know what a dj is... all those you've listed are producers, not dj's (apart from oakenfold, who let's face it, is shit).

and maybe you wouldn't find it exciting with your mates, but personally i find nothing more dull than trying to recreate hair metal on plastic instruments... would much rather have some music i like - it's all about choice, innit?

  • JonFE #40 4 years ago

Bitesize, no offense mate, but DJ's don't actually make music, they mess up other people's music :)
  • bitesize #41 4 years ago

yeah thanks, but i know what a dj is - doesn't stop it being possible to base a rhythm action game around dj-ing (or more specifically, turntablism). see: beatmania on ps1.

all i'm tryin to say is, there might be a market for rhythm action games that aren't based on rawk music. didn't expect people to jump on my case, sorry i ever fuckin mentioned it now.

ok, go back to your which-metallica-album-is-the-best arguments, that makes riveting reading...

  • johnnybrn #42 4 years ago

Bitesize, no one is having a go but you were the one who brought it up in the guitar-hero metaliica article, you shouldnt expect everyone to suddenly jump up and say that rawk sucks and turntablism is where its at.
  • bitesize #43 4 years ago

i was never expecting them to! what part of my posts made you think that?! i never once said that rock music sucks, that metallica sucks, that you should all be listening to what i listen to...

one comment, about how there might be a market for non-rock based rhythm action games. that was it... i just want a music game with music in it i like. sorry if that's offends people (somehow).

  • MrChuckles #44 4 years ago

Guitar Hero thread in 'No one mentions that people who play this should go and learn to play a real guitar' shocker!

    In other news, Metallica... yay...

When do we get Guitar Hero: Nu Metal... I want Korn, SOAD, Deftones etc... :-( Then playing bass is almost as fun as the lead.
  • rubthisway #45 4 years ago

I'm not really a Metallica-fan, but I'd get this anyway. Just too many classic riffs there to ignore.

    @BulletTheory05

I thought they both came off as plain human beings in the film, warts and all. Ulrich certainly gave as good as he got when tempers went off the scale.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, Some Kind of Monster is seriously great. A must if you have any interest in documentary film :)

    @jglover4

I think Ulrich says in BBC's Ages of Rock that they hired Bob Rock for the black album based on his work with Motley Crue :)
  • Feanor #46 4 years ago

A Guitar Hero: Smashing Pumpkins game would be awesome, but unfortunately they're not popular enough to justify it.

All or most of Siamese Dream on Rock Band DLC would be more likely.

+1 ... even as DLC for GH3 and I'd be a happy bunny
