Guitar Hero: Metallica confirmed News

PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Oli Welsh

28 October, 2008

The next single-band version of Guitar Hero has been confirmed as Guitar Hero: Metallica, and given a 2009 release date.

Confirmation comes via a short teaser trailer that's an unlockable Easter egg in the latest release in the series, Guitar Hero World Tour.

The teaser first appeared on YouTube last week, and Gamespot has now confirmed its authenticity and uploaded it for you to view.

"Unleash your metal god," proclaims the trailer to the tune of Master of Puppets, before reading "Ride the lightning - 2009" amid many thunderclaps, lightning-flashes and indiscriminate crashing sounds.

Guitar Hero: Metallica will follow this year's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith as the second edition of the game dedicated to the work of a single artist. It originally surfaced in Activision's financial paperwork back in June.

Activision has not confirmed whether Guitar Hero: Metallica will follow the same format as the Aerosmith game, now what platforms it will appear on, not whether it will support the full range of instruments added by Guitar Hero World Tour.

Now that might be interesting. I wasn't interested at all in the Aerosmith thingy but Metallica sounds fun.

This'll be the easiest game to date, considering how bad the guitar player is.

It also helps that Death Magnetic is rather good.

The Aerosmith-edition was plagued by bad button mapping. My impression is that Rock Band completely destroys Guitar Hero when it comes to making the songs fun to play. I read somewhere that the Aerosmith-edition became the template for mapping in GH: World Tour, so I'm guessing the same is true for the Metallica version. Sad really, since this in many ways would be my dream game in the music/rythm genre.

The Death Magnetic DLC was alright I guess. Neversoft have sort of learned that fun > difficulty is how note charts should be done. Tier 8 on Guitar Hero II was both hard and incredibly good fun to play, shame neither Rock Band or GH come anywhere near that anymore.

Because everybody's "decent" band is someone else's pos. That's the nature of music.

Out of interest, what band would you consider 'decent' for a full game?

For every ying there is a yang. I've played both quite a bit, and I still find the Rock Band mapping too pedestrian. Loads of strum bar mashing throughout the chord section with very little else invention during the solos. Maybe its the choice of music though, as RB was rather more eclactic and I was surprised at some of its choices (3 chord jangly guitar songs don't make for good guitar game material in my book).

I can firmly and honestly say that, of what I've played (finished GH3, got through about 20 songs in RB1) I prefer GH3 overall. Nobody else is wrong, its just my preference.
