Guitar Hero III for PC, Mac

Rock your desktop.

Aspyr Media has revealed it is developing Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock for PC and Macintosh.

Publisher Activision now has all of its platform-bases covered (PC, PS3, PS2, 360, Wii, DS, Mac), as super-rival Rock Band gets ever closer.

"Providing the option for our fans to play Guitar Hero at their desk or on a laptop on the go is incredibly exciting," said the Dusty Welch, head of publishing at RedOctane and man who probably didn't think that statement through properly.

"PC and Mac gamers can now shred as hard as their console counterparts do, and it's a great opportunity to help promote musicianship and expand the growing number of Guitar Hero fans worldwide."

Guitar Hero III on PC and Mac will boast a little more in the online department, where you'll be able to smash out power chords against each other until your little rock heart is content.

Other than that, it will be almost exactly the same as the PS3 and 360 versions, although there's no word yet on what sort of peripheral it will use.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock will be available on PC and Mac along with the other versions later this year.

Can you imagine anyone playing this on the train on the commute to London? I think not.

I give it about 7 hours flat before pirates start adding their own songs to the tracklists...

It's strange, but it sort of feels like they know it'll be their last chance...Even though Rock Band is the one who has to prove itself...

The best part about this news is that it will be finally easy to get usermade songs into that game. Gone are the hassles of getting custom songs in the PS2 versions.

I just can't imagine sitting round the PC to play this.

Still at least you have the choice.

Actually there IS word about the peripherals the PC and MAC versions will be using. You'll be able to use the keyboard like in Frets on Fire or your USB guitar controller (either the new one or the old XBox 360 one - which I'm using in Frets on Fire without having an XBox 360 :-).

I give it about 7 hours flat before pirates start adding their own songs to the tracklists...

So? If you complained about pirates pirating GH, then I'd understand that but adding your own songs to the tracklist kind of benefits the players and doesn't do any harm to the authors of the game (only to the musicians who don't get any royalties).

Besides - I guess it'll be LESS than 7 hours since the format GH songs are stored in is very well known... Take Frets on Fire - you can directly import songs from GH to it...

I just can't imagine sitting round the PC to play this.

Why? What's so different about the PC? That you have a smaller monitor? You don't sit, you stand. I've been playing Frets on Fire for a loooong time now - I even organized "jam sessions" with my friends with RF MOD which adds multiplayer capabilities to FoF.

P.S. Finally! Finally I'll be able to use the whammy bar on the PC - Frets on Fire doesn't allow for that although it has its own formidable set of features.

You would think, but I'm sure a few PC fanboy-nerds will claim that keyboard and mouse combo works better!!!

While i'm definitely buying this on console (havent decided is ps3 or 360 yet but wii is a no go due to unconfirmed DLC) i may give the pc version a look depending on the ensuing mod scene. I have frets on fire but i cant get it to sync right and its too much bother TBH. Hopefully with the pc release theyll be better user interface for importing your own songs.

I find the whole RB Vs GH3 nonsense sill really there's no reason why we cant have both ryhthm action games. The only reason people would shy away from buying both is if you need seperate guitars for both games. Its in GH and RB's best interest to ensure compatibilty otherewise people will be buying one or the other and not both like any fan of the genre should be doing.

    Incoming Noob Transmission....

Where does one go to purchase Mac games? I never see any around. I'm more of a console guy but I'll be getting a decent Apple Mac laptop (for "Uni" ssshh), and I'll want a couple of decent games on it.

Note: I'm not buying the laptop, it comes with the course I'm doing.

Where does one go to purchase Mac games?

    Mac stores or online, mostly.

But the (almost) only Mac game you will need is Vendetta Online. The real MMO elite, not the pretender EVE which is just an Excel spreadsheet.
