Guild Wars sells six million copies News

MMO PC News by Oli Welsh

27 April, 2009

Guild Wars celebrates its fourth anniversary tomorrow, and developer ArenaNet and its parent NCsoft have celebrated by announcing that it has sold six million copies.

That tally covers Guild Wars' four boxed releases: the three standalone campaigns, Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall, and one expansion pack, Eye of the North.

Unlike most MMORPGs, NCsoft charges no subscription fee for Guild Wars, deriving all its revenues from those four releases in as many years. The plan seems to have worked, although it's unknown if in-development sequel Guild Wars 2 will follow the same model.

As a birthday treat, Guild Wars has recently been updated with new quests and storage options, and there will be live events in-game starting tomorrow.

Guild Wars faces off against Dungeons & Dragons Online in the next round of Eurogamer MMO's Ten Level Test and yes yes we know it's late sorry.

Well that's nice, though it'll mostly be people that enjoy it buying 3 campaigns, like I did. I don't even play it that much, but it's nice to have an MMO sitting there I can play without feeling obligated to play it because I'm paying for the privilage. Not that it feels like a proper MMO, but it's pretty good none the less.

and GWEN ;)

I don't care thats still alot of people running around, and we're all on one server (technically) so its always well populated. I love it. Wish they'd reveal some GW2 stuff though! :)

@DFawkes: my feelings on GW exactly.

I must dip in again now actually to see what's going on. My characters must have a shedload of birthday presents built up by now...

Yeah it has been confirmed that GW2 will follow the same price model ( or lack of one).

Fourth Year updates are sweet. Loving the Zaishen Menagerie and the Zaishen challenges are really charging some life back into the areas that are normally dead because everyone's out solo farming somewhere.
