Guild Wars 2 Preview

MMO PC Preview by Keza MacDonald

20 August, 2009

Page 1 of 3. Page 2 ->

Since the game's announcement in 2007, NCsoft's Seattle-based developer ArenaNet has been quiet about what's been going on behind its doors with Guild Wars 2. With today's trailer, we get our first glimpse of the developer's re-imagining of this phenomenally popular online RPG. A lot has changed, but the developer's vision remains true to what made Guild Wars such a refreshing experience in the first place: accessibility, flexibility and incomparable value for money.

Guild Wars: Prophecies was a shot in the arm for the MMO market at the time of its release in 2005. It married a flexible, story-heavy, varied and hugely enjoyable campaign with a revolutionary player-versus-player system that has since grown to be one of the most fiercely competitive in the world, and it didn't force its players to pay a monthly sum for the privilege. Instead, two subsequent campaigns and an expansion pack were what drove the series' revenues, and there are no plans to dispense with the "pay once, play forever" business model. Once you've paid for Guild Wars 2, you'll be able to play it for as long as you like.

Set 250 years after the last Guild Wars campaign, Guild Wars 2 thrusts you back into a Tyria that's been taken over by big, bad Elder Dragons and their undead armies. The game's five races have been pushed back into their own territories, and the player's role will be to unite them in the struggle to reclaim the continent. Good news about the dragons, too - we definitely get to fight them. "Primarily the game will focus on one in particular," says designer and writer Ree Soesbee, "but the others are present in the world. Their activities will be have an impact on Tyria, and players will have the opportunity to experience the real danger that all of these creatures present."

A still taken from the epic trailer that's on Eurogamer TV.

Guild Wars 2's switch from an almost entirely instanced game-world, where you would adventure with only your party members, to a persistent, fully-populated one like those in more conventional MMOs, is the driving force behind most of the changes in the gameplay. The quest system, for instance, has been completely overhauled, and will offer something quite different from its competitors. "I think I can safely say that you won't see a single exclamation mark floating above a character's head in Guild Wars 2," claims lead designer Eric Flannum.

"We actually don't have a traditional RPG/MMO quest system," Flannum continues. "Instead what we've got are Events. Think of them as group-orientated activities. This is one of the many things that will encourage the player to explore the world - you can wander through and never quite know what you're going to see. You might come across a fortress that's being attacked by centaurs, or it might be that the centaurs attacked half an hour before you got there and they hold it now. You might start walking along a road you've walked a hundred times and suddenly there's a caravan travelling along that road that you may not have seen, and you can go help that caravan out."

These are bold claims for a persistent-world MMO. Guild Wars' heavy use of instancing made setting up dramatic storytelling much easier, but how is that narrative strength going to carry over to the sequel? "While our game is persistent, one of the things we learned from heavily instancing GW1 was how to really use instancing to our advantage," says Flannum. "The story will take place through a combination of instancing and persistent areas. We're really throwing our entire bag of tricks at the storytelling in GW2. I think we're going to be doing some things, especially with narrative, that people haven't seen before in an MMO."

The Charr, a playable race this time.

There's also an attempt to introduce more variety into how the players can interact with this new, living world - and not just the welcome addition of a jump. To say that Guild Wars was combat-focussed would be something of an understatement; the absence of crafting and non-combat professions meant that there wasn't a whole lot else for players to take up on a whim if they felt like it.

"We're definitely introducing crafting, as well as a few other things that are going to provide players with other things to do," assures Flannum, although he can't say what those other things are. "I don't want to say it'd take the focus off combat, but it's definitely not going to be the case that the only way to interact with someone in Guild Wars 2 is to hit them on the head with a sword."

Sounds very interesting, much more like a typical mmo yet still pushing in new directions.

This has been what I've felt a MMO should have. A living changing world in which we can involve ourselves in. I'm so glad GW2 will go for it.

No subs, either. Another to list after APB! I should finish Nightfall and get EoTN quick!

Even so with Aion out in Sept I can't really see Ncsoft pushing for an early release ^^

Looks good. Though I don't really like the designers vision that arena pvp is somehow more hardcore than world pvp. I mean, if the definition of hardcore is "only enjoys a limited set number of variables while PvP'ing and takes the time to put together an official team" then I guess arena pvp is hardcore.

Well, "vapourware" and "not pushing for an early release" are two very different things.

I personally cannot wait. The Guild Wars franchise thus far has been on of my most enjoyed competetive games ever. Hope the pvp is as balanced and well thought out in GW2.

The event system sounds great! The traditional MMO quest format of "collect 20 troll ears" is such a gameplay evolutionary deadend, glad to hear these guys are thinking outside the box. Hope it delivers.

I have been disappointed with all the news about GW2 to date, but this preview has put my mind at ease somewhat. I'm still not sure about the move away from instancing - I loved GW for its heavy instancing - but at least it sounds like they're not making an identikit WOW-alike MMO, which is what most MMO developers do.

The level cap isn't mentioned though - the low level cap is another reason I preferred GW to other MMOs, and the word on the grapevine is that they're increasing it to 80 or higher.

I may pick this up, sounds interesting. Question though: what happens to existing players of Guild Wars 1? (I'm not one of them) Are those servers still going to be running?

What are the system requirements for Guild Wars 2?

The system requirements haven't been finalized, but just as with the original Guild Wars series, we're committed to creating a beautiful game that will play great on mid-range gaming PCs.

I guess GW1 will remain supported.

Especially since the GW expansion Eye of the North lets you link to to your future character in GW2.

This just sounds far too good. It just sounds like a massive step forwards for MMOs, even if it weren't free I'd be worried about overreaching. But if it can live up to even half its promise at launch, and play catch up with expansions it should be amazing.

I don't really know anything about Guild Wars (well, I know that it was installed on most of the computers in my department at uni!), but this looks quite good. Glad to hear it's persistant instead of fully instanced and the trailer was really quite impressive. Looking forward to it!

P.S. How do they make their money?

By selling games. You know, that antiquated idea that most modern publishers think is insufficient.

Expansions. The idea with GW1 is that they'd release an expansion every 6 months (they had two teams working on them) and that worked out pretty well, until they decided to announce GW2.

They've also more recently started charging for little things, like re-customising your character and smaller mission packs, etc. I imagine GW2 will focus a lot more on the micro-transactions. I think it was something like £6 for four missions and a bunch of new weapons.

It was all pretty cool, and the way the GW leveling/weapon and armour system works means everything is always balanced.. So it doesn't turn into a case of "buy this, if you want to win!" Really hoping Old Republic works along these same lines.

Also from IGN: All of the art in the preview video was created in-house by our team and all the game footage was captured real-time from the Guild Wars 2 game client, no trickery involved. And because we create beauty through the expressiveness of our art, not simply by pushing more polygons than our competitors, Guild Wars 2 runs great on mainstream PCs, just like the original Guild Wars does.

I wish more developers did that. Seems all the games these days get shorter and shorter because they put way too much focus on showing off as many polygons and technical revolutions over actual game. Shocking for me personally was Bioware saying, "no more BG2-length game."

Guild Wars was a fine game alright!

I look forward to seeing how this one turns out. The fact that it will now be a persistent world should help bring in some of the skeptics from other MMOs this time.

It always seemed to me that GW received a lot of unfair stick based purely on things that it lacked rather than all the excellent things that it did offer. My favourite inexplicable criticism being lack of a jump button.

That art, so gorgeous again. The game itself sounds awesome too though I really wonder how they'll fund a more true MMO world with just the GW revenue scheme. Guild Wars with its instancing was in effect just a Diablo II clone and that made it affordable. Server costs are bound to be higher when they want to offer areas with more players in them.

This crew deserves this to go stellar as GW was a really fantastic game.

Whether it will depends upon Blizzards update incoming for WOW and the elephant in the room, the arrival of .....Diablo III. :)

Looking forward to playing this with my mates (some of whom are still playing GW but I haven't joined them for over 2 years as the consoles have dragged me away from the pc arena).
