I thought the newer RACE series (which this is part of) was independent of the old GTR/GTR2/GT Legends games? Although the differences are subtle, I've always preferred the mechanics and handling of the games up to and including GTR2. RACE has never felt quite right to me, which is a shame as this is a great package.

so.. not on xbox then ;)
sound pretty nice.
questions not answered in the review:
* should be played with a racing wheel then?
* is there any online / offline multiplayer?
* you speak of mods... what is possible with the mods?

So you mentioned the exhilaration of a great passing move, but glossed over the frustration of spinning out on the last lap. While I agree with you that it doesn't need all the crap in "arcade" racing games these days the one thing I would kill for is a GRID or sands of time style rewind button.

As much as I love the Simbin games, and own several of them, I am not a simulation fan enough to buy them at what seems to be a less than a year rhythm now. Not really sure what I expect of them, but maybe a new graphics engine and a slightly less dry presentation (the driving school in GTR2 was a step in the right direction).

The control settings screen on Race 07, and this one freezes on my PC - frustrating, as when I do get to play it without my wheel, it looks lovely.

Oh well, iRacing is better ;)

It is better to play with fully analog controls, and a steering wheel would be the best option. You could tweak the options to have it work quite well with a Xbox 360 controller, the main thing you would need to adjust would be speed sensitive steering which would stop the steering being so sharp at higher speeds (console racers use this a lot).

* is there any online / offline multiplayer?
There is online and probably lan, but I doubt there is any split screen.

* you speak of mods... what is possible with the mods?
There are a few mods for the older versions of GTR but most of them are just conversions from rFactor, so if you are after mods then rFactor is probably a better option for you. rFactor mods, no idea where you would get GTR ones from.

Great first paragraph, Oliver!

I'm very interested to see whether the series survives intact to the 360 in January.

Looking forward to this series hitting the 360 in January, shame it's not out before Christmas, I know quite a few people who'd like this on their Christmas list, me included.

My god, a comments thread full of enthusiasts!

/wonders if it is only me that chuckled at the possible connotations of 'even the greenest drivers are going to get to spray the Mumm now and again'

I am still hopeful for a decent 360 version though.

That's completely missing the point in my opinion. The exhilaration is all the sweeter because there is a chance you could spin out. You've probably spun out because you've overcooked it, so it's a case of deciding to consolidating your position or push on...like a simulation game should be.

There are levels of Traction Control and various other settings to minimize your chances of spinning, if it's that frustrating for you I would start with full assists and gradually ease off of them as you improve. There are more than enough Arcadey driving games to satisfy those who want to play something less punishing.

In my opinion, Sim racing only comes to life when a dedicated community and league accompany it. Otherwise, the only way the offline portion of a sim could could compete with online portion is through massive investment in A.I. and game structure and design.

But anyway you slice it, sim racing can be difficult, it can be frustrating, it can be punishing, but in the end it's supremely involving and excellently rewarding.

I participate in one of the largest online (possibly the largest) GTR2 league which has 4 divisions (gamers-crib.com). And by the looks of it GTRe seems to be gaining traction where RACE07 never did.

For the time being all i can say is "keep up the good work" to Simbin and if possible try to avoid minimalized annual updates of franchises.

Race 07 and now GTR Evo were a step backwards from GTR2 for me, the cars just don't feel right at all.

This sits uncomfortably between appealing to the hardcore simracer and the more arcade racer and doesn't quite do either well enough really.

That echoes my thoughts exactly. I still put hours and hours into GTR2, but the RACE series has never felt quite right. I was under the impression that the original developers (GTR/GTL/GTR2) left after GTR2 and are now Blimey! who are making a Ferrari game, and that the RACE series has been built up under the Simbin name but with a new team. Might be completely wrong, though.

Pretty good review. GTR Evolution is a subtle but definite improvement on GTR2s physics and sound is better too. Cockpits perhaps not quite up there with GTR2 but not bad. If you own RACE 07 then getting this expansion is a no-brainer. If you don't own RACE 07 the complete package is excellent value. The only drawback with the wide range of cars available is that the sim lacks some of the focus and character which a single license brings.
