Set in New York, see for yourself!

Rockstar has released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV, and you can watch it now on Eurogamer TV.

It will be set in New York and the main character appears to be of eastern European origin, Russian perhaps, sporting a heavy frown and suitable stubble.

"Life is complicated," he says, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. "Perhaps here things will be different."

Lots of impressive lighting is on show in the trailer, especially the movement of the sun through the buildings, and it appears as though lots of civilians will occupy the screen with you, in the busy Times Square area – or anywhere in Manhattan for that matter.

Special things to look out for, the "Get a Life" sign on top of one skyscraper.

From this evidence it seems Rockstar has a lot of game behind those locked doors, showing what is almost certainly game footage rather than pre-rendered cinematics.

Grand Theft Auto IV is due for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 in October.

Yes, we're excited. Even though we promised ourselves we wouldn't be.

Please show us some montage gameplay footage, even if it's only 10 seconds worth. Pre-rendered cut scenes (or even cut scenes using in-game engine) don't really tell me anything about the game.

With every other series I would agree with that statement. With GTA though, they tend to show you the tone, humour and setting of the game. Which in my opinion is so much more important than sandbox gaming.

I think it'll be set in modern times, on a crappy council estate. You play a kid in a hoody and have to earn 'respek' by selling weed to other children, happy-slapping other children, having sex with other children and stabbing other children.

You also get a choice of 100 happenin' hip-hop choons to play through your character's mobile phone - there's even an option to really turn up the volume to annoyingly high level when you're on a buss, which earns even more respek from your idiot mates giggling on the back seats.

Oooh, I can't wait! It'll make your proud to be a gamer.

I understand why they want to create some hype... it would be easy for people to consider the GTA-sandbox craze as last gen, either that or they do have some surprises to show off. I wonder if they can keep the Rockstar love going through a new generation, I think they are a telented bunch with good ideas, but Id like to see them try and go in new directions(with new IPs obviously... GTA does what it does well) because most of their games have the "thug" culture in common(I guess there was table tennis... but that didnt seem like a serious effort, as good as I hear it is).

I'm still interested and if its good Id pick it up given the chance but Ive never been a dedicated follower of them.

I really hopw thet don't screw arround with what made Vice City and San Andreas so great. VCS had a nice touch where you could retrieve your weapons after dying/arrested but Vice City and San Andreas had the fun factor

most of all... online play - co-op and massively multiplayer. Like the gang territory stuff from San An, but online with real people on Xbox live!

The scenery will be indeed interesting. I never liked the 3D GTA games but maybe GTA IV will do it for me. A 70s setting would definetly suit me, I really love that time period.

Looked pretty fucking cool to me!... who gives a toss where it is, I know the streets of Liberty now ... BTW the theme park looked like Coney Island? The bridge looked like the Brooklyn Bridge all in all looks like a 90's setting to me.

I see an America's Next Top Model parody in there.

That's a show that began in 2003, which along with a xXx Parody which was released late 2002 along with a sequel in 2005 which seems to put the setting as a post 911, close to now, Liberty City.

I'd also like to point out that this is not guaranteed to be the only city featuring in the game, though given the effort they've put in to this one I'd be suprised to see another city popping up.

if IV is set in new york then san andreas must have been set in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas, not Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas, and the sequel to gta3 wasn't gta:vice city, but infact gta:miami!

the little church is the one from liberty city that is surrounded by CBD buildings on the second island. i hope they've changed the layout sufficiently for the whole game to feel new... at the moment it's all a bit meh.

and please for the love of god let the bad guy be a bad guy and not some cunt who regrets it everytime he kills someone in the missions but doesn't mind killing 50 people in a random killing spree. i'm looking at you vice city stories!

I agree, the model doesnt look great. But it all depends how many of said characters can be on screen at once really doesnt it?

Also, does said character deform (get fat/slim/muscular) as game goes on (ala gta:sa)? Is character customisable, etc? If yes - then it's understandable.

Anyone recognise any cars in there? If you pause the dolly-shot along the street at about 0:30, there's a *very* close approximation of Chrysler 300C. In fact, it appears in that shot about 7 times in different colours -- it's everything that's not a taxi.

my comment wasn't some kind of revelation, i did play gta about 11 years ago, and it was obvious where the games were meant to be set then, just as it is now! my post was simply pointing this fact out to the people who, for some reason, belive it is set in a realistic New York. For a start the empire state (or whatever "comical" name it will be given) would be much further north if it were a "true" rendition of NYC. Libery city was always meant to be like new york, and rockstar would be pretty much fucking the liscence if they decided to go for real cities. for a start manhattan is probably the most boring gameplay area anyone could come up with these days, unless you were planning on playing pacman. it's all jsut straight roads.

New York City doesn't only consist of Manhattan and even Manhattan doesn't only consist of grid streets. You'll at least be able to cross the Brooklyn Bridge(obviously).

What's your point? Even if it was officially New York City instead of Liberty City, it still wouldn't be a "true" rendition of New York City. No developer has ever even faithfully recreated the single borough of Manhattan within a video game (to my knowledge), let alone the whole of New York City. Spiderman 3 really is set in New York City, and it will probably stay just as true to New York City as GTA IV. Either it's too much work, developers are lazy, or it's not possible. You Decide!

32hunteR, GTA is made in Scotland. It's just that America is the most common location for entertainment mediums such as popular films, and television shows, and video games regardless of who makes it.

For example, Alan Wake is developed by Remedy Entertainment, a Finnish developer, but is set in a small town in Bright Falls, Washington, USA. Damn those Americans for being so damn popular!

There has already been a New York sandbox game, and that was true crime new york. very dissapointed with rockstar tbh. i was expecting something totally original and fresh, i wanted GTA future! spaceships and flying cars!

Then it wouldn't be GTA.

Disappointed isn't the word I'd use more underwhelmed, then again it's a teaser so it won't tell me anything above what the graphics will look like.

Lets hope it is not rushed and that there is a diverse multitude of things to be interacted with.....i;e...swimming more interactive...all previous features...more buildings to enter like cafes...and other food stores..... petrol stations...banks...senic interactions even to sit on a chair watching the sun go down and being able to shoot fish and seagulls...little things that go far....! even being able to give some a good doe boy round the back of the neck!

Nice trailer and graphically it looks much as I'd expect it to look. Definitely an improvement on the PS2 visuals of the "last gen" games. Ultimately, I hope it isn't so big and sprawling as San Andreas and that instead they concentrate on bringing the one city (Liberty / NY / whatever) fully to life - and that means lots of people, buildings you can enter, a subway you can properly use to fast-travel about the map. Then as long as they sort out some of the old GTA bugbears (vanishing cars, rubbish targetting controls, the lack of mid-mission checkpointing) it should be fantastic.

Could you explain to me how you tell the difference between a pc game displayed on a monitor and a console game displayed on an LCD?

I think it looks pretty good. There seems to be an awful lot of detail in a lot of areas, like rubbish in water and such. Maybe not 'next gen', but everything in the trailer seemed to be of very high standard. I'd like to know how many cars/pedestrians will be out simultaneously though... If based on New York I want to be gridlocked!

Actually I think the Hauser brothers are from the US. New York if I'm not mistaken, but yeah Rockstar North is a Scottish Dev studio, formerly DMA designs. And for the benefit of the guy who thinks us euros are bitching, there is a GTA game set in Europe, and it also happens to be the only GTA set in a real city. GTA: London. It just appears you were probably still in play school when it was released. Which there is nothing wrong with, obviously. I was young too once.

I'll second that - they were pants and awful to control.

Overall I'm impressed! obviously the poly count is nowhere near as high as alot of next gen stuff but that is understandable given the size, scope and hopefully content of the game. Still looks pleasing to the eye though. Now we must all prepare to suffer months of drip fed info before the supposed release date. I hope they release at the same time on PC. I think the controls on the console versions suck and blow. keyboard and mouse all the way baby!

Porting (because thats what you're essentially saying) from a pc to Xbox360 is not too hard. Much harder with the PS3. But that doesn't take away from the fact it is risky. So close to a deadline, any lead programmer that hasn't switched their team to running on either a PS3 or Xbox devkit by now, is irresponsible.

Also, if the Xbox360 is just a pc as you put it, then what makes you think it can't handle GTA4? I can tell you this though, any prototyping I've worked on, is frowned upon when running on pc, but we would be downright fired when we demonstrate our milestones to publishers without running it on the appropriate console.

So is it Liberty City or New York City? I mean, something kinda strange is going on in the trailer. True, the other games 'resembled' real-life cities, but this seems to be based on some pretty accurate New York landmarks - the Chrysler Building, the Statue of Liberty etc.

Wonder if this is indicative of some kind of change of approach to GTA IV?

hey guys, I'm from NYC.....This is not Liberty City in that trailer. All the GTAs so far have been fake cities based from real cities. GTA3's Liberty City was just a skyscraper city. It was probably a mix of Chicago, NYC and Vancouver (where most NYC movies are filmed cause it's cheaper).

There was not one NY landmark in Liberty City. Where were FDR Drive, Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street and Times Square? But I saw them all in the GTA4 trailer. I think because it's now GTA4, not just another GTA3 sequel, and it's next gen that Rockstar is going to recreate REAL cities this time.

Oh joy. Liberty City, again. FFS, if it has to still be in the US, then at least choose a city that hasn't been done 3 fucking times already.
Someone smack the guys at Rockstar with an Originality Fish, PLEASE!!

Anyway, Saints' Row (albeit flawed) and especially Crackdown have raised the bar for this genre enormously. So this has a lot of work cut out to make sure it lives up to the hype, and that trailer doesn't exactly fill me with butterflies like I was hoping, at least with regards to the graphics and scenery (which is all we can judge as of now).

Probably still be great though, but my anticipation has now been diminished by at least a half as it certainly doesn't look the revolution many were expecting it to be. Disappointing to say the least.

Loving the Batman Begins-esque soundtrack though, and the story certainly feels like it could be quite involving, in the way the trailer was presented.

Considering how big the European (British and Scottish) influence on the GTA games was/is and that they all basically deal with the so called "American Dream" in a very satirical way, it's kinda funny to read dumb comments like yours...

They're not going to switch to using real cities now, not with the series having an established history and recurring characters.

Building design-wise, that may be the case. But how much can they change the actual layout without it being a different city altogether? If they've gone to the effort of naming it' Liberty City, then it can only end up the same as the LC in GTA3 and LCS but with minor changes.

From the trailker it also looks like it will go out of Manhattan, well into Brooklyn and possibly into New Jersey - I could swear that ferry terminal is the one in Hoboken.

The 'GetaLife' building is great - made me smile.

If they put multiplayer into this then I can't wait.

But GTA3 was such a massive change to the original GTA that it makes that point kind of irrelevent. Judging by this trailer, it doesn't look like GTA4 is going to have anywhere near the same leap on GTA3, so to make the layout of the city totally different would have severe continuity issues.

Going to have to get hold of that Kontaasingatsi (or whatever the fuck it's called) film though now. Never heard of it before, but it sounds brilliant.

I dont know the fact that theyve chose a city they've already done says to me they are confident enough with the ideas they have for GTAIV... I have a feeling they have plenty of surprises in store and changes to keep it feeling like we never played it before.

@ ishigo - Sarcasm is the recourse of a weak mind, how old are you 12?

Its quite clear due to the angular nature of the models (I work in 3D moddeling BTW) you dont need a wireframe image to be able to tell. Alot of what you see is done with clever thexturing, bump mapping et.

The overall polycount may be on par with most next gen games but I was refering to individual models as opposed to the entire game and it contents on screen at any one time.

The game looks great. Were you expecting some kind of gears of war? If this follows the other GTA's philosophy, it will be a huge map with streaming aka no loadings. The graphics are great for that matter.

1. Continuity is irrelevant. The fun of the game comes above the history of the plot. Some elements of continuity were added in to the other games, but only as a nod/wink to fans.

Exhibit A Fact Fans - Like wot that geezer said bout the 2d GTA games.

2. Rockstar decided not to use real cities for legal reasons (ie so that they couldn't get sued for insinuating a city is a crime ridden shithole).

Exhibit 2 - In the animated title screen to GTA 3, you can see blue police cars (identical to the unique NYPD's cars). But in the game they were changed to generic ones.

3. City's are more fun than fields. Rivers are more fun than seas. Bridges are more fun than Freeways. They probably decided to use an expanded version of Liberty City with more areas.

Exhibit 0 - In the first GTA, liberty city was much bigger taken in more of the real New Yoik. This probably contradicts points 1 & 2 but it's the intranet innit. don't have to make sense to be true.

4. "74nk5" < "/\/\0t0r81k3s" < "40t (0ff33 53x" < 'y'. Solve for 'y'.

It's not set in New York Eurogamer, didn't you look at the trailer?

Not that it matters, as Liberty City essentially IS New York. But there's quite a few give aways in the trailer that say it's in Liberty City;

Looks very nice, just like every other "next-gen" game in production or on the market. We will see how it turns out soon enough.

SomaticSense, et al. - Koyaanisqatsi is really worth watching at least once. Very hypnotic, but at the same time provokes some serious questions regarding the nature of the society in which we live now.

Just to add to the speculation, if you pause the trailer around 5 seconds in, when the train is moving, there's a sign on the left that says "Visit Vice City for $300". Its to the top-right of the 99c sign. Interesting.....

"GTAforums had posts made by a user working for Rockstar for a viral marketing shot. I'll try to find the link again later. Basically it was posts by a person that dates back to March 11th, he predicted the main character would be Russian and in NYC (it was actually a bunch of police-drama-esque posts like bits from a movie). Turned out to be just marketing hype for the trailer's release.

I think the following is almost confirmed from his posts:

1- The game takes place in multiple countries (NYC and Bogota-ish regions confirmed).
2- The main character is Russian.
3- The plot is Enemy-of-the-State-ish (Will Smith movie where he is under surveillance).
4- Various aspects of the game that broke immersion are have been changed (no more floating police badges, you must now actually run away or get rid of your coat/change clothes to get the tail off of you).
5- No more magically unlocked doors, the character now performs more logical animations when stealing a vehicle (punch through the window and grabs the keys from the ignition to prevent the driver from speeding away, or hotwires the cars instead of just "making them start"
6- Hint of a "credibility" system that impacts how much money you make (authorities run ridiculous stories through the media about the protagonist, such as his ex-wife being a transvestite among others)."

Personally I think it looks great. Did anyone else notice the "americas next top hooker" billboard. Also it is Liberty city. If you pause it on some scenes you see liberty city signs everywhere, the boat says liberty city on it.

Plus I think the reason it is in america it allows Rockstar north to put all that British humour in it and take the piss out of america. If it was based in Britain a lot of it would fall flat.

Although I wouldnt be suprised if you could fly to the uk within the game

Any Glaswegians notice some similarities in the game? Glasgow Central Station and the Ferry terminal, the tenement flats and M&D's with the theme park. All quite similar if you know the city. Well done Rockstar North Scottish humour that most the world does'nt get!

But at least they finally gave it a needed graphics upgrade. Shame about the fact that it will be the SAME GAME A-FUCKING-GAIN. God, GTA is just so overdone it's not even funny anymore. Only diehards and chavs seems to buy it. Crackdown raised the bar beyond what GTA has ever done, bar when it first came out. Face it - GTA IV is going to be a GTAI with purdy graphics and more Thompson-bait and nothing more.

GTA IV is set in Liberty City the same way Superman is set in Metropolis and Batman is set in Gotham City.

I mean that even though the name of the city in the game isn't officially New York City it's still New York City just the same. Just like in the Superman and Batman comic books. Metropolis and Gotham City aren't called New York City in the comic books, but are really just nicknames for New York City. Can you see how Liberty City could be a nickname for NYC? Statue of Liberty....

GTA IV "Liberty City" will probably more faithfully represent New York City than even games officially set in New York City, like Spider-man 2. Spider-man 2's New York City didn't really look too much like NYC besides a few landmarks. The only game to accurately depict NYC is probably that Tycoon game and PGR, and you couldn't only drive around a few blocks in PGR.
