GTA IV ships over 10 million copies

Chinatown Wars out before Feb 09.

Take-Two has sold over 10 million copies of Grand Theft Auto IV to shops around the world.

That's according to a quarterly earnings conference reported by GameSpot. However, those figures are a trifle misleading, as The Top Global Markets Report recently tracked combined UK, US and Asian sold-to-people figures for GTA IV as just over 6 million.

Take-Two also pinned the first real information to Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the exclusive DS game announced during E3.

This, according to boss Ben Feder, will be released sometime between November 2008 and the end of January 2009. "I didn't say that," retorted Feder, when asked by analysts if this meant Christmas. Drive-by!

Take-Two also reconfirmed that the downloadable episodes for Grand Theft Auto IV would not be out before November this year. Which we knew.

Plus, Eurogamer was told yesterday that Rockstar North was still on track launch the exclusive Xbox 360 content sometime during November.

Well deserved, awesome game (again) Rockstar.

I might just break out GTA again this weekend, the thought of the DLC coming has spurred me to finish it (although I know I'll just head for cops 'n crooks again!). Hell I may even break out VC for some nostalgia as well :)

10 million games, Wow. Still feel it was one of the most over-hyped games ever. Good game but it hasn't been booted up for months now.

Good game, but I'm not sure it deserved all this.

If the DLC is a new island with missions!!!!
That will just seal the deal for best next gen game for me.

yeah, whatever, I am (still) not buying a DS... "whenever" it is coming out...

which brings me to what has really been rubbing me the wrong way for some time now: all this hide and seek with release dates... I would really appreciate an industry-wide set of standards/norms: a) 8-10 months prior to (estimated) release: screenshots & promotional clips, b) 6-8 months prior to release, a definite (as much as possible) release date, c) 2-4 months prior to release: gameplay clips...

    cheers...

Didn't live up to the hype, but it doesn't need to, to sell that well anyway, so this is really non-news to me.

Which begs the question, why did I post in this comments section?

    Konstantinos,

I completly disagree with you, i would prefer to get games when they are done rather than forcing release dates on developers.
If you check out Stardocks proposed Gamers Bill of Rights

    #2 states
Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state.

So quite often release dates are not set because they frankly dont know when they are going to be finished, there are always schedules but these often slip.

    davc4,

I am merely expressing my longing for a world in which studios and publishers would force themselves to adhere to stricter rules and schedules conserning their product's exposure (and eventual release) instead of becoming grateful victims of marketing consultants whose sole intention is to plot machinations & strategies that build suspence and anticipation (regardless of the quality of the product)... self-regulation is always the best way...

hmmm, ok... now there's that world peace thing...

    cheers...

Take-Two also confirmed that there'd be jack sh*t further content for the PS3, leaving those gamers with a degenerate, less than 720p res version, because they only managed to get the damn code to work and never touched it after it was up and running!

    Over & Out.

I'm still hoping that the DLC is set in the 70's with a young Pegorino going toe to toe with established families

Why can't gaming journalists do some basic fact checking before they submit a news story? GTA IV sold through (not shipped) 10 million units, so the figures are perfectly accurate.

"Sales of Rockstar Games' blockbuster Grand Theft Auto IV continued to exceed the Company's expectations. Over 10 million units have been sold through to consumers as of August 16, 2008."

Obviously that's more than the 6 million figure for the Top Global Markets report, but that's because the game was sold in more than two markets (not just the US and UK).

The game had shipped 11 million units to retailers as early as May:
