GTA IV date still what it was

Between Feb and end of April.

Excellently-named Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick has rebuked news organisations like this rubbish one for reporting that Grand Theft Auto IV's release date is more up in the air than it actually is.

"I wasn't intending to be newsworthy," Zelnick told GameSpot of his comments last week. "When asked about the release date, I confirmed the previous release date we'd given, which is our second fiscal quarter. That's to say sometime between the beginning of February and the end of April."

Confusion apparently arose because the question he was asked specifically referred to a "firm" release date equivalent to the old one in late October, but Zelnick's response was widely reported outside that context, giving the impression that the game was no longer destined for the period quoted above.

    I note he doesn't say which year. ^_^

    No i reckon it will be end of April 2008, and the wait will be worth it!

    I think the genre has moved on far too much for this to be any good without something pretty special up their sleeves.

    I smell disappointment

    Take two ...are they not also going to publish `duke nukem never` if it rears its head ?

    Maybe they could release the pair of them as a megapack of some description.

    @MattDamon

    I take it you haven't played Crackdown. But even if GTAIV improves little over that it'll be quite disappointing.

    err, crackdown was awesome, and far more entertaining than anything rockstar have ever put out. and by the sound of the preview, Assassins Creed will push the envelope even further.

    @t8yman

    Each to their own I suppose mate but I agree Assassins Creed will be AWESOME (I hope!)

    I think some people here haven't been following GTAIV that much, as it's not exactly just San Andreas with better graphics. It's more than that.

    @SomaticSense

    Can you give us some pointers on what the more stuff is because from what ive read which isnt a lot ill admit, its GTA in HD but with planes taken out cos the citys not as big and youd fly over it to fast to be worth it.

    They redesigned the game mate it's a lot more realistic now with duck and cover fire improved gunplay but you are right there isn't much info!

    One of the previews - was it in a magazine (oh, the dearth of GTA IV info!) mentioned that the combat would be 'more like gears of war'... which is probably an improvement over previous GTA combat mechanics, in fairness.

    Can't say I've been disappointed with a GTA game so far, although I found Liberty City Stories a little inaccessible - not sure if it was the characters or the new old liberty city...

    As I am happy to drive around the city just tooling about, and sometimes just walk down the streets listening to street chatter and seeing where those unexplored back alleys go, I would probably be happy with a GTA-with-nice-graphics, but certainly from the small previews that have been published, it sounds as if Rockstar are trying to change the mechanics - with your PDA as a means for you to trigger missions, and the altering of weapon-buying mechanics by replacing Ammunation with back-street traders.

    Lots to be interested in - Not sure GTA should follow the crackdown mould exactly - Crackdown was a genius game of comic-book physics, and rooftop-leaping hilarity, but not sure any GTA main characters are ever going to have bionic powers. Not sure they should, either.

    Can't really see this arriving beginning of February, but, y'know *fingers crossed*.

    So it sounds like it's going to be a bit like Halo 3. Hi-def graphics but the gameplay formulae has not moved on much.

    I'm not knocking either, so don't stone me! I don't own either X360 or PS3 - but I've read lots about it in mags and online as well and was just trying to appreciate whether the changes are BIG (ie. graphics and the genre moving on) or they've simply gone for more 'granularity' within the same gameplay mechanics.

    To be honest, when it comes to speculation about a release date, I'd say I'm more interested in WHY it was delayed than when it's coming out?

    I think that is a MUCH more interesting topic to discuss...
