GTA Chinatown Wars site appears

DS exclusive to have Wi-Fi action?

Rockstar has cobbled together a placeholder website for DS exclusive Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

There are few details besides the Winter 2008 date. However, a Wi-Fi logo does feature - suggesting online multiplayer action could be on the cards.

Chinatown Wars was first unveiled during Nintendo's E3 conference earlier this month.

The game is being worked on by Rockstar North and Rockstar Leeds. It will use a custom engine to create the sprawling and open environments so integral to the series.

Chinatown Wars will have a brand new story based around the Triad crime syndicate in Liberty City, and will feature plenty of new faces to do jobs for or aim bullets at.

Look out for more information soon.

It will be interesting to see how much this sells.

Does DS have the tech for this game? I'm sceptical.
  • spazmo #3 4 years ago

If this is 3d it will be gash

This game could definatly go either way.

It depends on what they want to do with it, why would they make GTA for DS anyway?

Worlds shittiest handheld console, which is aimed at kids and women, gets a technically demanding game thats tailored for 18 to 30 something males.

I dont get it, if it's good I might buy it, but is there really any chance of it being good?

EDIT: if it had face carving mini-games I would actually buy it!

Yes, let's all assume the DS can't do 3D, despite the fact it can. You could easily have a 3D free-roaming game on DS, although admittedly not as good visually as the PSP editions. The question is how they'll treat the DS - face-carving minigames? Blowing on fires to put them out? Even a Metroid Prime Hunters style aiming system? There are a lot of ways to screw this up.

Erm, it's been online for a week or so now at least...

Please tell me you're not one of those people who equate gore, violence, overly enlarged boobies and specular mapped space marines with giant crotchguards as 'adult, mature' games?
  • louyfitz #8 4 years ago

Not really, I just dont like the selection of games on the DS so far, and the fact that even tho much better technology is a available they decided to make everything look like shit by have pretty much no RAM and fuck all processing and graphics power.

Oh yeah and those damn virtual pets and villages, they suck so bad.

I live in a town already, with real people and real pets, why on earth would I wanna do the same thing in a game?

"It depends on what they want to do with it, why would they make GTA for DS anyway? "

The DS has the biggest user install base of handhelds = Profit.

You could make a piece of shit game on the DS, brand it with GTA, and you'll almost be guarenteed a quick profit, even if industry reviews slate it.

Other than that, why not? The two screens, and maybe a pseudo 2d-3d interface could make for an interesting adaptation, harking back to the GTA1.
  • louyfitz #10 4 years ago

fair point. Churn out shit, rake in cash, spend it on making the proper GTA games better ;)

What, like New Super Mario Bros?
  • louyfitz #12 4 years ago

Yeah just like the new super mario brothers.

I loved N64 but we're in 2008, even handhelds shouldn't have GFX like that anymore.

a Dell Axim PDA can play Quake 3, yet the best looking game on DS (according to you, whatever your name is) is Super Mario Brothers.

If they brought out Q3 for DS, now that would make it worth buying one.

I'm sorry, but what exactly is wrong with Mario on the DS, again?
  • louyfitz #14 4 years ago

Nothing particularly wrong with it if you like graphics from 11 years ago, lol.

Anyone who wants to see the DS working very hard should purchase Nanostray 2 - or just have a butchers at it in the local gamestore. The DS graphics have anti-aliasing which makes the screen look like it is running at twice the resolution of normal - very technically accomplished.

Obviously much easier to do it in a 2.5D game - but just goes to show that the DS still has the odd trick left up it's sleeve when the right people get on it.

@louyfitz: I think you've got New Super Mario Bros. confused with the DS port of Mario 64.

Why does everyone respond to THE tit in every comment thread?

Anyway, if they used cel shading ala Tony Hawks, it could work quite well.
  • Ryze #19 4 years ago

I'd like to see how this turns out, then how this sells.

a Wii GTA will follow if it's a hit. Hopefully San Andreas Stories starring Niko, set after GTA IV.

Because people like playing with tits?

Even the old GBA could have had a stab at GTA in 3D so I feel quite sure the DS is up to the job.

Also, remember the DS was released almost 4 years ago. Of course its starting to look a little dated now, just like all consoles coming into the fourth year of its life
  • louyfitz #23 4 years ago

Yeah that game, not mario 64, I quite liked 64 for a bit, but I can't stand seeing wasted platforms.

I'm not denying that the DS is a VERY VERY popular handheld, but they could have done so much with the idea of touch screen and duel screen.

Why not make games for people that like action and fighting? rather than just games for people that like puppies and flowers.

I know there are shooters for DS, but nothing in the same league as Quake or Condemned.

The PSP is terrible for FPS and TPS games, because of the missing nub on the right hand side, however touch screen controls are actually really smooth for shooters once you get in the swing of it.

just maybe something with a decent online mode and a bit more of a gritty look.

anyway GTA could be ok, so long as they dont make it a pussy version because it's on DS, infact you could do some really nasty things to people using a touch screen.

    Backstreet abortion side-missions anyone? lol

Stealing a car could be a lot more involved, or tap where you want to punch or stab someone?

drive-bys could be good too, top screen normal behind car view, bottom screen FPS view for hangin out da window cappin fo's!

Or pick-poketing people with the touch screen?

Blowing into the mic to smoke a spliff? :)

Isn't stuff like Metroid, Contra, Call of Duty, Brothers in Arms or the forthcoming Metal Slug (for examples) action enough?

Personally, I reckon a top-down GTA (in the style of the original/s) with Cannon Fodder style running about controls (point where to shoot with stylus, move with d-pad) would be the mutts nutts. I'd prefer (and expect) that over the 3D style of the PSP game.

Also, is it just me, or does 'adult' usually mean 'juvenile' in games?
  • louyfitz #25 4 years ago

You actually made me look at contra, looks god-aweful.

Tho CoD and Brothers in Arms look ok.

I never said "adult" games, I said ones that aint for brats and bitches.

Anyway cheers for reminding me that Brothers in Arms is on DS, forgot about that.

Might buy it if I can be arsed to find my DS, fuck knows where I put it.

I think it's gonna look great on the shelf beside Nintendogs, Animal Crossing and Brain Training.

not my shelf of course, but the shop shelf!
I really can't see it working too well but i'm looking forward to seeing the stats afterwards.

I wonder if there will be prostitutes in this version? The Daily Mail would not be happy... or they would pretend not to be anyway
