GT Concept demo contents

One course, ten cars.

Details of the Gran Turismo HD Concept demo have emerged from the latest issue of Famitsu.

Free for Japanese PS3 owners to download from the PlayStation Store on 24th December, the game will feature ten suitably flashy cars, and the all-new Eiger Nordwand course. Slightly worryingly it's here you'll have a choice of racing around the normal way, like a sane person, or in reverse, like a weirdo.

Famitsu, in an article partly translated by IGN, offers a tantalising account of mostly Japanese-manufactured cars that appear in the demo:

  • Suzuki Cappuccino '95
  • Mazda Eunos Roadster '89
  • Honda Integra Type R'04
  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV GSR'96
  • Infinity G35 Coupe
  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR'05
  • Lotus Elise 111R'04
  • Nissan Sky Liner GT-R V Spec II '94
  • Toyota Celica GT-FOUR Rally Car '95
  • Ferrari 599'06

The free download won't feature online play, series producer Kazunori Yamauchi told Famitsu, but it will offer network rankings based on times achieved in different cars. He also revealed that the demo will include Polyphony's next-gen driving-simulation engine, which aims to fix areas like drift control and drift angle.

Earlier this month, Sony and Polyphony announced they were scrapping plans for a full version of GTHD and focusing on GT5 instead. The result of which is this 'concept' demo, one of many downloads that will be released before GT5's 2008 release.

Yamauchi has also promised an official announcement for Gran Turismo 5 before the next Tokyo Motor Show, which takes place in October 2007. Vroom, vroom.

First time anyone's called my MX-5 'flashy'...
  • Hughes. #2 5 years ago

No front-engined rear wheel-drive cars then?

They should whack a Aston in there or something, everything else is catered for.

Edit: Doh! The MX-5 is FR, not exactly ultra powerful though.

I think perhaps "racing in reverse" may refer to the direction in which you follow the track, rather than the direction in which your car travels relative to itself. Just a thought :)

And probably still a year of development for GT5, so who knows how it might look by then? Back when GT3 launched, a lot of people I knew who had no intention of getting PS2s (even some ardent Sony haters) went straight out and bought a copy and a PS2 to play it on.

Seeing how well this is shaking down, I don't think it's wide of the mark to expect the same thing to happen again.

    Ok,

Now will my Driving Force Pro 2 work with this Sony??
  • Ryze #14 5 years ago

Yeah Hughes, I hope that Kaz' promotion will help Sony to regain a grasp on that concept.

It was GTA3 and GT3 that pushed me to FIND the cash for a PS2, at the expense of the several other costs in life.

I was no Sony hater - I just had no reason to buy a PlayStation. I loved the Capcom beat 'em ups, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter and got a PC in 1997 - once I grabbed a Voodoo 2 for it, the PlayStation seemed out of date. For my console fix, I grabbed the best games on the Saturn I bought for £40, plus bought decent (Gravis Xterminator) gamepads and got a load of arcade and console games such as Rollcage, Driver etc. (+ GTA with network play 1997-2001 - dope in college and uni student accom.) on the PC - to go along with Half-life and Quake II. Case closed, no PlayStation required, and a better gaming experience overall - leading to a career in IT from all the PC junk I learned wrestling with Win9x and Digital Media as it evolved.

Sony better realize that with the housing market as it is in the UK, plus the fact that London's average wage skews the national average - we won't be paying £425 without a hell of a good reason to. I just added up my PSP spend since last Sept - it's madness - as I got an iTrip, Tekken, Ace Combat and GTA VCS recently. I still want the GPS for journeys too once it comes out in the UK.

It really looks like my money in 2007 will be going on Xbox Live capable games - as I've still got nothing that plays online (with other people to play with) on the PSP & PS2.

I want Sony to take a good look at their online offering now and really ramp it up for '07 - on the PS3, PSP and hopefully even the PS2 - via this PNP thing they've mentioned. It's the only way they'll get the majority number of the hardcore crowd for this round.

How about Gran Turismo Online, simultaneous on the PSP, PS2 & PS3, with shared net code?

Why do I keep dreaming like this...?

I gaurantee GT5 will have an online component...almost.

Excite me do? Excite me don't. So what if it looks a bit nicer? You get 10 mostly boring cars you've mostly driven already. If they'd stuck an XJR-15 or something on the end of that list it might be worthwhile. Otherwise no.
  • nasanu #17 5 years ago

"Wow. Half those cars were in Gran Turismo on the PS1 :)"

Wow. You really don't understand GT.

    @dabo:

I'm surprised your mate managed to run PGR2 on his 360, when no-one else can! ;o)

Oh, and may I remind you that these demos, and GT5, are not launch games, like PGR3 was, so they will have had longer to get to grips with the PS3.

Me? I'll be waiting to see what they can do with Forza 2. And PGR4.

GT was old as soon as it had a number in it's title...

And finally, there's that age old adage: Graphics do not a great game make, but they sure as Hell help!

Polyphony seriously need to sort the AI.

Hughes, I'd think th 599 would be as good as the FR concept gets :)
