Greenberg reckons Reach will lap GT5

Xbox exec gets a bit fighty.

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg reckons Halo: Reach will be king of the sales castle come the end of 2010 and has even dismissed competition from Gran Turismo 5.

"Is it launching next year?" he joked about the PS3-exclusive Polyphony Digital racer, speaking in an interview with Gamasutra.

"I've seen years and years of mini-games, but I haven't seen that the game is done. They just released the PSP version - maybe that's what they've been working on. I feel confident that there's nothing that will compare in size. Halo: Reach will be the biggest game of 2010."

While a lot of console executives refrain from directly referring to the competition, Greenberg's happy to do so. Next year, he added, Xbox 360 will "continue to remain $100 cheaper than PS3", and it will "have more games, more blockbuster exclusives, no matter the genre".

One source of Greenberg's optimism, he said, is the ongoing success of third-party games on Xbox 360 relative to other formats. Indeed, according to the latest NPD figures for US sales, Modern Warfare 2 performed substantially better on 360 than PS3 despite the simultaneous release.

However, it's Sony who appears to be lining up the stronger first quarter of 2010, with MAG, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5 and God of war III all likely to hit before the end of March.

Microsoft can boast of a couple of exclusives - Splinter Cell: Conviction is only coming out on PC and Xbox 360, for example - but its earliest first-party exclusive is likely to be Alan Wake. Which we'd probably try to get out the door before we started poking fun at Gran Turismo's slippery release date, but y'know.

To be fair this guy "reckons" a lot. Oi Tom where's the NPD's?
  • Widge #2 2 years ago

Splinter Cell is coming on PC? I thought it was console only! Or perhaps thats Alan Wake. Well thats good news anyway, I'll have to get a joypad for that or actually get round to faffing with DS3 drivers.

I really liked the look of the vids from this year. Also like the fogginess of Alan Wake. Fog = win.

    @ Widge

Alan Wake is heading to PC as well, although no date is confirmed.

I was looking at my wanted list yesterday and when it comes to exclusives in 2010 I only want 1 360 exclusive and thats this years Forza 3 (might still get Reach IF it dazzles but after ODST I'm not that bothered). The rest are PS3, my how things change.
  • Eraser #4 2 years ago

Since Halo 3 was nothing spectacular (oh am I going to get burnt for this) I'm not too excited about Halo Reach. I'll just get it from a friend for a couple of weeks to play through it once I'm done with all the other big games.
  • originaljohn #5 2 years ago

He's talking out of his ass. We all know, and so does he, that some wii game will be the biggest game next year. Whatever new casual hit they have coming or wii play. Simple as that.

I own both consoles and would rather play GT4 next year than another bloody Halo.
  • uzivatel #8 2 years ago

@Widge: Sounds like Alan Wake. The game was planed to be PC(Vista)/Xbox 360 exclusive, but Microsoft has withdrawn from the PC game market as a publisher. Remedy has mentioned its up to the publisher (Microsoft) whether or not the PC version is going to be released.
  • RedSparrows #9 2 years ago

'I own both consoles and would rather play GT4 [sic] next year than another bloody Halo. '

You'd rather play the 5th GT than the 5th Halo? ;p
  • Widge #10 2 years ago

Guh, I am dead poor now. I really have to think about purchases next year. Reckon I will instabuy FFXIII but expecting a massive price slash on most titles next year like the November 2008 rush. Will exercise restraint.
  • Kyledanutmeg #11 2 years ago

Here we go the same halo stuff trying to get people hyped.
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #12 2 years ago

Isn't MS's first exclusive (well, PC & 360 exclusive) Mass Effect 2? That comes out in January.

Whilst obviously this is PR-speak, I do agree with him that Reach will be the biggest game of the year.
  • Douche #13 2 years ago

Unfortunately i don't think there is anything particularly exciting on the horizon for 360. Looking forward to Splinter Cell and maybe Mass Effect if they sort out the combat. Hopefully they pull off Natal as well.

Time to get a PS3 and get stuck into that back catalogue me thinks.
  • Widge #14 2 years ago

I need to stop playing Left 4 Dead and start playing Mass Effect again before ME2 hits. Although I can hold on until Steam decides on one of their random mega-discounts.

There are too many titles coming out next year to afford. I just about have everything I want from this year bar the PSP games that have come out (oh and PSone US PSN titles). Really having to put into place a £20 or no strategy.

"Oh he sounds a like he is getting a bit worried about the Playstation's recent success. It's a dark time indeed for Xbox when they are pinning all there hopes next year on yet another Halo game, what in 2011? Master Chief at the summer games?"

You mean like how they outsold the ps3 - who had a relaunch, pricecut and a good lineup - last month according to the NPD? How a lowbudget side product such as ODST sold more copies in a couple of days than a lot of high profile competition titles did in ltd? I don't think that he is particularly uncomfortable. Not in a position where they want to be at worst.

Sony used up a lot of it's ace cards this year, not without success I might add. It has most definitely helped them.
MS on the other hand has been holding a lot of it's ace cards to the chest this year and even without them, they have had a pretty good year. They did better than last year, sold a ton of games, broke some records. Next year they have a relaunch, room for a pricecut, several massive games, etc.

So no, I don't think that he is losing any sleep, even with the recent fantastic performance of sony. All in all, the one thing that this year proves is that all gamers benefit from such strong games & parties.
  • sfp_noodle #21 2 years ago

the irony here is tht 2 years ago sony was showing this kind of desperation. poking digs at other console's exclusives becoz ur worried about ur own isnt a good way of attracting any kind of positive publicity. sony ended up with egg on their face after hyping up games like heavenly sword and haze especially which was billed as a 'halo killer' at one point. it seems odd hearing it from MS now
  • GoldLightan #22 2 years ago

Only the PS3's ridiculous starting price could make anyone think that it now qualifies under "Both consoles are at a decent price" now. 249 quid is not a decent price, the benchmark has always, always been 150 quid.
  • gandhimaster #23 2 years ago

Its obvious this year (natal/halo excluded) that Sony have by far the better 1st party line-up this year.....

Its taken them ages (too long id guess) but PS3 exclusive games are now arriving by the truck load! Whats MS been doing during this time? Letting their exclusives games go rather than retain exclusivity.

Seems pretty weird to me. May be saving money but exclusives sell consoles.
  • Murton #24 2 years ago

Halo bigger than GT5? THe sales will be pretty close I'm sure but a lot of gamers will move on from Halo very quickly with its single day SP campaign and average multiplayer, GT5 on the other hand, like all previous GT games will have masses of content, I know a lot of people who still play GT4 today which just goes to show how long GT games live on.

As for the jibe about the release date, just a slight case of pots referring to the colours of kettles. Alan Wake has been showcased at the last five E3 events, only a few months after GT4 came out and a year before GT5 was even announced. Perhaps next time Greenberg comments on the competition, which the industry as a whole regards in poor favour I might add, he should brush a little on the facts of the things he is comparing.
  • Dizzy #25 2 years ago

After seeing those NPD MW2 numbers he might be right. Depending on how much MS promotes Reach it is probably the game to beat.

Both GT4 and Halo 3 sold around 10 million each, but the latter on a much lower install base. Greenberg will win this one.

Typical MS exec, chatting out of his arse. Atleast be a little subtle to show you have brains. Halo 3 was madly overhyped and is in the shadows now... won;t be suprised if MS port it to PC just to pull more money out of the franchise.
100 dollars cheaper = broke man's console who is conned into paying 60 dollars for a wireless adapter and god knows what for online play. In the one year you have a 360, you might aswell hit your ps3 up with a new title...

  • rotmm #36 2 years ago

@Mnia, "Halo 3 was madly overhyped and is in the shadows now"

    I agree with you.

Well, I would agree if it wasn't for the fact that around a million games of Halo 3 have been played in the last 24 hours, or that what is effectively a Halo 3 add-on hadn't sold 3 1/2 million in the last 2 months.

So actually, I don't agree with you. And the reason for that? Well, you're wrong.
  • Widge #37 2 years ago

Be interesting to see if GT5 IS still a main draw. I mean I'll keep my eye on it, but I'm not going to get all mental about it. There are more things I care about more than another GT. I tend to prefer a bit of off road arcade fun in the form of Motorstorm rather than realistic track racers. Still, we'll see. I'd still recommend it as the realistic racer of choice though (and I'd recommend Forza for a 360 owner for balance sake, already got someone to grab a copy of that!)
  • Widge #38 2 years ago

I would like to play Halo 3. I loved Halo 2 and I'm sure I would rate Halo 3 above MW2 based on it being like those past experiences but "more".
  • rotmm #39 2 years ago

    @Widge,

I may be wrong (and I'm sure I'll be challenged to state I am ;)) but I personally believe that an awful lot of people who bought GT3 and GT4, along with Prologue, haven't actually played the game that much.

I only had a PS2 for a short period of time as I was late to the game and then I went to live abroad for a few years and therefore gave it away. But I had both of those games and barely played them, just as I had Forza 2 and barely played that. And most of my PS2 owning friends also had one or both games and barely played them.

However, whenever a non-gamer came around, the first disc that went in the machine was a GT game. 'Cos damn, if it didn't look good!

GT5 will also be a must-buy for a large number of PS3 owners (very likely myself included) but, like the Satanic Versus was back in the day, is more for sitting on the shelves than being played for a lot of owners.

I'm not saying it won't be a great game, I'm sure it will. But many hundreds of thousands will buy it for the visuals only, play it for an hour and there it will sit until a "non-gamer" visits and it will be a case of "Look at how beautiful this is!!!!"

    Imho, of course :)

I dont care what you guys say and I see many reasons why defending GT5 but he is right to make fun of it. A console exclusive like GT series ofc is a weapon for anyone to use against eachother when it comes to console wars. Imagine Halo being delayed years.. Or even more, imagine if they did to xbox ownwers what they did with GT5 prologue.. to sell them a demo. I mean.. Only Sony could pull that without being thrown into fire. lol and to think that the "demo" was released almost 2 years ago.. I mean wtf is up with that>? Why would he not make fun of it? I found it funny personally. Other than that I dont really care. Specially I cant care when it comes to executives from any kind of company. They are bound to come out and sell craptalk.

He was correct about also MW2. Wcich also means nothing to me... Does to them , not the gamer. The gamer is in that percentage enjoying their games and nothing more, nothing less. Aboutt he titles, we have to admit, Uncharted ( and ofc along with the pricedrop ) is what gave huge boost and success to PS3 this year. If it wasnt for that PS3 would still be burried strungling, which still doesnt mean that PS3 is done strungling. Like someone else mentioned correctly, Sony used all its aces this year, considering the huge time and budgets requiered for the PS3 exclusives, they took so long to be released ( and still not cause still we are waiting for God Of War 3, GT5 and Heavy Rain ) we havent even hear of plans for the next bunch of worth boosting the PS3.. If it takes so many years for each bunch of good exclusives then PS3 will strungle even worst by the end of next year. if you ask me they shouldof kept a title or 2 of great exclusives for November-Deecember next year instead of first months of 2010.
Somethign interesting is that he uused Halo Reach as his draw card to mock GT5. Alan Wake looks phenomenal and the fact I havent cared for Halo reach ( thought if I dont get hyped and have low expectations it will sutisfy me easier.. or something ) and not Alan Wake or Conviction they might finally refress the series. it really needs it.

I dont know and I seriously dont care who will sell more this Xmass. I just hope that next year they all got enough things to offer cause right now the waiting on games agenda is not that sutisfying considering that its a total of 7 games on both consoles for next year alone. And I dont count Fable 3s etc cause thats for the 360 and nothing shown yet so .. Its not exsistant to me yet even on the papers.

  • Teamallstar #44 2 years ago

Industry research firm NPD Group says that November 2009 was the second-best month on record in terms of revenues. Unfortunately, the best month was November 2008. Overall retail sales of all software, hardware, and accessories came in at $2.7 billion last month, a decline of nearly 8% from 2008. Hardware sales slid 13% from last year with revenues totaling $1.05 billion, while software sales declined 3% on sales of $1.4 billion.
Unsurprisingly the #1 game last month was Modern Warfare 2 from Infinity Ward/Activision. 6 million copies of MW2 were sold at retail last month, with the Xbox 360 racking up the lion's share of those sales (4.2 million units). Here's the rest of the top 10 games sold last month:

    1. Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360) – 4.20M
    2. Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) – 1.87M
    3. New Super Mario Bros. Wii – 1.39M
    4. Assassin’s Creed II (Xbox 360) – 794.7K
    5. Left 4 Dead 2 (Xbox 360) -744.0K
    6. Wii Sports Resort – 720.2K
    7. Wii Fit Plus – 679.0K
    8. Assassin’s Creed II (PS3) – 448.4K
    9. Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) – 362.1K
    10. Mario Kart Wii -315.0K

Nintendo's Wii held on to the number one spot in consoles. Frankly it wasn't even that close:

    1. Nintendo DS – 1.70M
    2. Wii – 1.26M
    3. Xbox 360 – 819.5K
    4. PlayStation 3 – 710.4K
    5. PSP – 293.9K
    6. PlayStation 2 – 203.1K

Microsoft's particularly proud of their performance in November, calling it the best-ever November in terms of 360 revenues. Microsoft raked in $838 million in hardware, softwa

In that case I wouldn't classify the 360 proper (either the Elite or the now-extinct Pro) as being at a "decent price" either. Sure there's the Arcade, but that's not a proper Console for me, more a replacement for dead ones with working HDDs and the like.

GT5 is bigger than the videogame industry and your typical fanboy drival, it is important for the motor industry and of interest to car enthusiasts who never pick up a videogame controller.

What's more GT5 is a title that appeals worldwide, and will continue to sell strongly up until GT6's release.

Fairly likely that Halo Reach will outsell GT5, but couldn't the guy have picked a better game to compare with. Like one of the same genre. Not to mention Halo is like the flagship series of the 360. This just seems to me like they are scared and coming out on the offensive, any employee of MS would say this. GT5 will probably outsell Forza 3 though.

    @Murton:

"I'm sure but a lot of gamers will move on from Halo very quickly with its single day SP campaign and average multiplayer,"

. . . yes, that Halo multiplayer sure is just average. All those millions of people that play it for years . . . fools, the lot of them.
There's nothing wrong with being a fanboy, but at least don't make nonsensical comments like this if you want poeple to do anything but laugh at you until tears come out of their eyes.

"GT5 on the other hand, like all previous GT games will have masses of content, I know a lot of people who still play GT4 today which just goes to show how long GT games live on."

Yeah, nobody still palys ODST. Or Halo3. Or Halo2. Whatever happened to them? Lets check -- in the last 24 hours, there were 524,771 different people that played a total of 1,134,113 Halo3 games online. Over half a million players, over a million online matches per day . . . over two years after launch.

  • busboy33 #54 2 years ago

    @rotmm:

"I think you're wrong. [GT5] going to do stellar numbers."

No question it will do staggering buisness. One of the top three PS3 selling titles for the year almost assuredly (I'm betting FF13, GoW3, and GT5). Certainly in the top 5.

But bigger than a Halo game? Even if you don't like the series it is undeniably a sales juggernaut. I personally dislike the FF and Madden series, but I can't rationally think they're not going to sell millions of copies.

    I'm not claiming they are accurate, but if you go by VGChartz numbers;
    Halo: 6.43M (released November 2001)
    Halo2: 8.43M (November 2004)
    Halo3: 10.45M (September 2007)
    Halo Wars: 1.6M (Feb 2009)
    Halo ODST: 3.68M (Sept 2009)
    GT1: 10.85M (April 1998)
    GT2: 9.37M (January 1999)
    GT3: 14.89M (July 2001)
    GT4: 10.37 (Feb 2005)
    GT5P: 3.32M (April 2008)

Again, I'm not saying Halo is a good series, or that GT isn't . . . but if Reach is pretty much Halo 4* the numbers (especially given the difference in the installed hardware bases) make it pretty safe to say that Reach is gonna sell more than GT5.

*: Of course, Reach could be some crap "re-imagining" of the franchise. I think its more likely the sun is going to burn out than MS letting that happen, but until we see it its a possibility.
  • Quixz #55 2 years ago

I can tell you right now that MAG and Heavy Rain wont sell very well. The PS3 gets very good games but the fan boys would rather talking about how good the games are on forums than go out to buy them.

(Ready for my negs now thanks in advance.)
  • Calgon #56 2 years ago

Yeah more PR trashtalk, no worse than Sony though and to be fair Tom didnt really back up the statement that PS3 has a big lineup next year, 2 safe AAA titles that will do the numbers, 1 maybe and 1 meh.

GT5 - Ok thats one, it does look good as it should do after all this time.

GodOW - I dont see the draw with this series, I'll have to try it sometime just to see if I *am* missing something but ok thats another big seller that people want.

HeavyRain - Ok its had the hype and I like the devs after playing indigo prophecy but Im not sure how its going to turn out or whether it will do the numbers you'd hope for the type of budget its got... might be the PS3s Too Human as far as success goes.

MAG - It looks a bit out of place in that list IMO, to me mentioning that seems like you cant find enough true AAA games to mention.

I think this year PS3 had a stronger year, next year MS will even it out, as alot of the awaited PS3 games were released this year theres not much left other than GT5 and GodOW from the looks of it. I have a feeling next years E3 will be a big one for MS, I think there will be quite a few announcements there and not just Natal games, there will be plenty of traditional/core AAA games on show I bet.

I think hes right, Reach will probably beat GT5 in terms of numbers sold, the hype machine itself will sell the game (eg. MW2).

And to the guys spouting the numbers saying Xbox beat the PS3 by 100,000 units sold in November, thats for the US only, the PS3 outsold Xbox everywhere else. Xbox will always beat the PS3 in the US, Microsoft have got the fan base and brand marketing, in terms of console and exclusive games.

Ill tell you this though, Final Fantasy will outsell both by a shit load.

i love how people make fun of halo ever snce halo 3 didnt have a ridiculous graphics engine. and diss it for it's 'mediocre' multiplayer. halo 3 still has 200,000 playes online at peak times online, customiseable emblems and charachters, and skill based matchmaking; with save film, forge, file sharing, ever changing and increasingly cool playlists and achievements to unlock, and dedcated servers, i think its technically superior to call of duty from many aspects. also look at halo 3's graphics engine. while not impressive from a technica perspective, halo 3's engine still hold up very well today, and will in the future, with ultra clear environments, impressice draw distance and the best hdr ive seen, its a graphics engine designed to be consistent, and cater to the fanbase as a solid canvas for peoples wildest expectatons.
therefore, those 'hardcore' 13 year old gamer kids who rack up more hours doing jobs around the house than actually playing games. probably know sweet f.a about how painstakingly hard it is to create a 'mediocre' experience like halo.

    @Feistycheese:

"Ill tell you this though, Final Fantasy will outsell both by a shit load."

VGChartz (again, not carved-in-stone reliable) has the biggest selling FF game listed as FF7, selling 9.72m (released September 1997).

There are ALOT of FF games it doesn't have tracked (i.e. FF2), but I would believe that 7 is likely the best-selling, and if that's the case (and the numbers are accurate) then it's been outsold by both franchises in less time (GT1-4, H3, and almost H2).

I know the FF fans are deeply passionate about the series. I don't care for it, but it and DQ are the undeniable royalty of the genre. Still, that style of RPG (IMO) just isn't as dominant in the overall gaming public as fans may think. Heck, Fallout 3 is listed as 4.5m and Oblivion is at almost 4m (360+PS3 for both). That's almost half the sales numbers of FF7 in only 2 years or less*.

FF13 will do great sales, but I honestly don't think they will be THAT good. I'll be suprised if it breaks 4 million combined for the year . . . and I'll be suprised if Reach doesn't do that in the 1st month.

*Fallout3 and Oblivion do NOT include "Game of the Year" edition sales for either console and also doesn't include PC sales, so the actual sales numbers for both are guaranteed higher.

    edit: added the "*" disclaimer.

fed up with this willy waving.

i enjoy playing on both consoles, i spend more time on the ps3 because its got all my media and the browser on it, as well as my favourite driving games in gt4/5p.

i shoot shit on the 360 more tho, coz bf2 is on it, its the only game i play on live, if that goes, so does my sub.

but comparing a driving game to a shooter is just fucking dumb. if geurilla were making a new killzone offshoot to be released around the same time as the new halo offshoot/halo 4, then analyse away. only if forza and gt were released together can he say anything.

which just says he's an almighty cuntbag tbh
