Great Giana Sisters coming to DS News

DS Retro News by Oli Welsh

15 December, 2008

Unlikely as it may seem, late-80s collector's item and notorious Super Mario Bros clone The Great Giana Sisters is to get a DS release in Europe next June.

Wired reports that dtp Entertainment is working with developer Spellbound Studios - founded by Giana creator Armin Gessert - to bring the controversial and rare platform game to a Nintendo machine, of all things. It will feature a remixed version of the original soundtrack and updated graphics.

The Great Giana Sisters was released - briefly - for the Atari ST, Amiga, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC in 1987, before publisher Rainbow Arts had to withdraw it under legal pressure from Nintendo.

It stars siblings Giana and Maria, who bop blocks to collect power-ups that give them the ability to smash more blocks wit their heads. Not only that, but enemies and even map layouts bear strong similarities to the NES classic, Super Mario Bros.

Derivative it may have been, but Great Giana Sisters was one of the better platform games on home computers at the time. Thanks to widespread piracy, it became a cult hit after it was withdrawn.

20 years on and it seems as though Nintendo's prepared to forgive and forget. Perhaps that's not surprising - Great Giana Sisters wouldn't be the first tribute to Super Mario Bros on the DS, after all.

I owned this on C64.

Then a mate's mum gave it to a charity shop behind his back.

I played Great Gianni Sisters on the Amiga as a friend got hold of a pirate copy for me along with Kakatis, an R-Type clone that was also banned. GGS was a great game with an excellent soundtrack by musical maestro, Chris Huelsbeck (he of Turrican fame).

If you have an actual original copy, I believe it's actually worth a fair bit to the right people.

Had a pirate copy for the Amiga (possibly still do). Now that I think of it why did they have to withdraw it? Sure it was really like Mario but you could argue that about a lot of different genres and games.

It was almost the exact same game only with sisters.

I would actually buy this, and I hate Mario with a passion. Not sure about the remixed music and updated graphics though, I hope you can choose to play it in original C64 presentation.

A good game? I tried playing it again a few months back, and it's still as awful as it was back then. All it does it prove just how incredible the original SMB is.

Better not be the terrible flip-screen version that appeared on the ST.

I loved that game. Can't recall if it was on my C64 or the Amiga a few years later though.

It was the same game. Probably mostly harmless, but nevertheless a complete rip off.

I got this on C64 when it first came out and remained blissfully unaware of its quick removal, the controversy surrounding the whole thing and its subsequent cult status for years. Unfortunately it got given away to a cousin before I found out.

As previously stated the control was rubbish. It didn't play anywhere near as good as Nintendo's original. I only ever played it on C64 though. Curious to know what the amiga version was like.
