Grand Theft Auto IV ships 13 million units News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Tom Bramwell

11 March, 2009

Rockstar Games has now shipped over 13 million copies of Grand Theft Auto IV worldwide for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

That's according to motherpublisher Take-Two's latest financials, which also reveal that the Carnival Games titles have shipped over four million units worldwide.

Although Take-Two posted first-quarter revenues of USD 256.8 million (up by a little over USD 16m), its losses also went up from USD 38m to USD 50m, blamed on marketing, legal and R&D costs.

The publisher attributed the good news bit to strong sales of the abovementioned games and Midnight Club: Los Angeles, also from Rockstar.

However, in a subsequent conference call with investors (thanks GameSpot), there was no word on sales figures for the recently-released Xbox 360-exclusive Lost and Damned DLC for GTAIV, which analysts predict has already done over a million sales.

And yet no Bafta. Hmmm.

The games that won deserved them, unlike this decidely lacklustre sequel. GTA: Vice City is still the best GTA for me.

Respectfully MBar: Bollocks.

The impression I got was someone's terminally untrendy dad trying to get "down with the kids" with varying levels of success and accuracy... The CODathon and the mandatory nod to Fable with its luvvie involvement and luvvie MD seemed a little out of step with what actual games journalists and gamers think...

Well, that's just my two cents, but then again I'm a GTA fan and I found Fable to be great for a weekend but far shallower than the orgasmic reviews (and Molyneux, natch) suggested.

Interesting how no-one's mentioned TLaD's sales numbers yet. I wonder how well it has done, really.

Anyway, I hope T2 live out the financial troubles okay, as they constantly seem to be on the verge of collapse (they'd be fucked if it weren't for R*!). They need to develop more of their own IPs and stop relying on R* to bring so much money in.

Change Fable to GTA4 in that sentence and that's exactly what I thought of it. Played it, finished it, wondered why I'd bothered, never touched it again. It's no where near as good as the ZOMG100/10 reviews suggested, and is in fact a step back for the series IMO.

I'm probably biased, but it annoys the hell out of me that GTA4 is reviewed and ranked up alongside the likes of Ocarina of Time for Best Game Ever when it, in my eyes, is more like a 8/10.

13 million units sales, I wonder what fraction of that the DLC numbers will be? You can put me in the DLC No Sale column for one.

My biased opinion: Congrats to R*. Well deserved. Still playing GTA 4 and still loving it. And 'The Lost and the Damned' definitely raised the bar for DLC, plus being an excellent game all in itself.

This article forget to add that GTA IV sold almost equally on both PS3 and the 360. Excerpt from Take-Two Earning Call Transcript:

Edward Williams - BMO Capital Markets

First of all, going back to JT's line of questioning, can you give us an idea as to this 13 million GTA 4 units, how many of those are Xbox 360 platform? So what's the addressable market for the downloadable The Lost and Damned.

Lainie Goldstein

It's approximately 50/50, Ed.

So the DLC isn't much of an incentive after all.
