Grand Theft Auto IV: New Trailer

On Eurogamer TV: Searching for that special someone.

Rockstar's second public trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV has gone live and we're mirroring it on Eurogamer TV.

Called "Looking For That Special Someone", the one-minute-six-second teaser begins as protagonist Niko Bellic is seen in a variety of scenes trying to track someone down. At one point a woman pleads with him to stop the killing.

The trailer also treats us to a few glimpses of things we've never seen in GTA before: hanging off the back of lorries, kicking in a door and shattering the lock, clinging onto a helicopter as it swoops over the city, and watching from inside a car as bullets impact against the windscreen and leave holes in specific places.

Apart from the gameplay implications, there's the promise of some of the most detailed environments ever witnessed in a Grand Theft Auto game - or any of its clones - with Rockstar taking every opportunity to show off the range of lighting conditions and other special effects its artists have been invited to employ.

We expect you'll be watching it over and over tonight to glean details, so don't be shy about using the comment section to share the things you spot.

GTA IV is due out on PS3 and Xbox 360 on 16th October in the US and 19th October in Europe.

    It's...ever so slightly underwhelming.

Has the city of New York put any complaint in about this setting of this game a lá the Church of England's little spat over Resistance: Fall of Man?

From the limited footage that I've seen I have high hopes for this game, not just because of the chavs who'll buy it because "It's GTA innit mush" but because it's looking like it's going to be something very special. I won't be getting it myself though - I haven't really enjoyed a GTA game since GTA2 i.e., the top-down ones.

I see what they did there.

The GTA games have never had cutting-edge graphics. That's not the point. You can't expect GTA4 to look like Gears of War or Motorstorm because they are more scripted and have a more narrow playing area.

GTA4 looks to me how I'd expect it to. It's definitely a step-up graphically from previous games.

However, I remain unconvinced over whether the more realistic setting is better or worse.
  • chiz #9 5 years ago

It looks great, a big step up from the previous gen offerings.

I couldn't give a toss about graphics, as long as it feels and plays like a GTA title.
  • richardiox #10 5 years ago

Framerate better get sorted and locked before the retail code. Oh Saints Row how i remember your stuttering tear-iness.
  • JayeM #11 5 years ago

It looks amazing, I am impressed.

blimey! It's The Getaway 3, but with gameplay!

Oh look, it's just like all the other GTA games, just with less pimps/hos and more brown.

  • captainrentboy #15 5 years ago

I'm still undecided, this new trailer hasn't really impressed me that much, I don't know what it is about the GTA games, it's like the developers are trying too hard to be cool and edgy. And God damn there's some bloody ugly character models in there at the moment.
I'll end up reading a good few reviews before I splash out on it, as there's a lot of other 360 games out around about that time that are looking good too.
  • zozart #16 5 years ago

    Awful framerate...

Apart from that it seemed OK. The helicopter-hanging reminded me of Just Cause.

I have no reason to doubt the Rockstar Guys regarding how great this game is going to be. They are going to be teasing our asses right up to the release date with short videos just like this. Have faith in this game people... You have NO reason not to. Since when have Rockstar let us down?
  • rudedudejude #19 5 years ago

    Nice!
Looks like Microsoft made a good decision, this could be a format winner!

Provided the game looks that good and isn't just rendered for the movie a la EA.
  • login_name #20 5 years ago

First trailer was better. This just looks like business as usual. That might be a good thing, but I can't help but feel a little underwhelmed. Not too keen on making each GTA more movie like either. I'm sick of 'starring' in movies. There's far too much emphasis on this in gaming these days, it's boring.
  • MGG #21 5 years ago

@Adam_T: that is all in-game footage.

And where is this tearing people keep mentioning? I don't see any at all :S
  • Zomoniac #22 5 years ago

GTA isn't set in New York.

Except it clearly is, hence the new trailer having the Empire State Building in it.
  • agparrot #23 5 years ago

like mysteryfaceuk says, The GTA games have never had cutting-edge graphics. - I'd happily take a halving of the level of detail in the trailer if it meant that the formula could be spruced up with a higher density of traffic than the predecessor games, and certainly that the game would feature a locked-tight 60fps framerate.

I don't want genuine gridlock levels of traffic, but I'd like my car to still be there when leaping out of it - I'll be fairly irked if, as in previous incarnations, I find myself running to collect a package/shoot someone/whatever, then turn around to find the motor has magically disappeared. It won't matter if it is a really pretty motor with its name in letters accross the boot, it'll still be Gone.

Still, as a lover of all previous GTA Incarnations, I'm sure I won't be able to avoid this one, but I'd rather play it without teeth clenched at the thought of what they have sacrificed for graphics.
  • stuarty_2003 #24 5 years ago

I'm seeing the shity (should that have two ts?) framerate! Why are some movies like this these days?

Aside that, it's just a teaser!
  • urban #25 5 years ago

  • Hullfire #26 5 years ago

"Except it clearly is, hence the new trailer having the Empire State Building in it."

Well, it IS New York. But it also ISN'T New York. It's Liberty City - which is GTAs version of New York just the same as San Fierro is San Franciso in San Andreas.

The first trailer had a boat with Liberty City on the back, remember.

  • captainrentboy #27 5 years ago

For a fairly big GTA story this isn't picking up many comments, infact if you look over the last three news items on GTA not one of them got over 50 :/
Does that mean that interest in the series is finally begining to wane? Are we all finally getting sick these Sandbox/Gangster Mob titles?
I mean EG have only got to write 'Halo 3', and five seconds later there's a million posts from both the fanboys and haters.
  • mysteryfaceuk #28 5 years ago

    @Adam_T

"Looks like Microsoft made a good decision, this could be a format winner!"

I don't think this game is a format winner. It's true that Microsoft have won something of a coup with exclusive DLC but to the majority of gamers (i.e. the ones that don't regularly visit sites like this one) it will mean very little and may even go unnoticed to most.

Anyway, who knows, since Rockstar can develop the PS3 version knowing all have a hard drive, who's to say the PS3 version won't perform better?

  • BeersOfWar #30 5 years ago

I think there will be an in-car view - like in PGR3, which will be cool. AND... you can hug walls and look round corners, which is great news.

Hopefully you can change the "chav kosovan" outfit... and get a mohican.

Are you suggesting you prefer the "one million post fanboi flamewars"?

    O_o
  • greenthumb #32 5 years ago

wow, the character models look like shit.... and it looks the exact same gameplay as the last three games.....
  • mysteryfaceuk #33 5 years ago

Looking at the comments above about there not being many messages for this story, I wonder if something surprising will happen and GTA4 doesn't sell as well as expected. I have no doubt that it will sell millions (although not as many as previous instalments perhaps as sales of neither 360 or PS3 are big) but it's just possible that the new style of the game may put some people off.
  • IAmBatman #34 5 years ago

    > Except it clearly is

It has a lot of buildings that look the same as ones in New York. But GTA isn't set in New York.
  • Skeletor #35 5 years ago

Hmmm, I'm a bit dissapointed. Character models (faces) are pretty average, actually far below what Half Life 2 offered. Some of the textures don't look too hot either though the cars and vehicles are fantastic. There seem to be some serious framerate problems also. I somehow feel that the true innovation here will be the rather mature and maybe even a little bit political plot. Just my opinion...

It has more technically impressive graphics than Vice City, and that was good. o_O

More than anything i'm hoping they build on the story, i don't remember ever paying much attention to them in the past games.

Damnit, when will they go back to stylised, cartoony fun GTA? Can't they learn from Crackdown?

I'm sure it'll be fun as the last few. That's why I'll slip it and wait for a Crackdown sequel, ta. I've had 3 doses of the same ol' same ol', it's time for something new.
  • mysteryfaceuk #42 5 years ago

This trailer is now on the US PlayStation Store as well. I've just had a look. Maybe it will be on the European site tomorrow.
  • The-Bodybuilder #43 5 years ago

As someone who never like any of the GTA games passed 1 & 2, I went into this with low expectations.
I am somewhat pleased actually. Graphics are a bit meh, but the game looks more focused and real.

Just as long as it's not as frustrating as the previous versions, I'll keep an eye on this.
  • Greebo #44 5 years ago

Framerate is worrying, although optimising code is one of the last things to do, so I expect this will be sorted.

Here's hoping they've taken note of Crackdown and remembered to inject some fun!
  • Duke_Red #45 5 years ago

    Kiss Kiss Bang Bang....
  • chicknstu #46 5 years ago

I dont think we've learned anything new from the trailer. All the gameplay stuff mentioned (Kicking in doors etc...) could simply be from cutscenes. And they've always had crazy / stupid things in the games, so seeign a guy hanging out of a truck isn't an innovation.

Still looking forward to it, but I haven't seen anythign yet that I would personally qualify as 'Brand New' about it.
  • QotSAfan #47 5 years ago

Won't be buying this unless EG's review is good. Looks like the same old GTA which is as boring as hell now.
  • dadrester #48 5 years ago

i guess i'm the only one that was quite impressed by this. probably because i thought the last one was fairly dull. anyway. if it's better than the last 2 psp/ps2 offerings it's a buyer! i have a bit of a soft-spot for gta, but the 2 psp versions were incredibly samey.
  • mysteryfaceuk #49 5 years ago

I enjoyed GTA:LCS on the PSP but haven't bought VCS yet. Yes, LCS was a bit of a rehash of older GTA games but for a handheld game it was remarkable.

I loved GTA3 and Vice City on the PS2 but never got into San Andreas for some reason. It just didn't interest me as much, maybe because it was more Boyz in the Hood than Godfather.
  • NthSimulachum #50 5 years ago

    *yawn*

That was pretty underwhelming. Nice graphics, but all the stuff he was doing you could do in the old GTAs/Mercenaries etc. It was also horribly humourless, though perhaps it didn't come across too well in the video. Everything struck me as generic and bland. There was a distinct lack of satire.
  • agparrot #51 5 years ago

Just near the beginning of the clips shot head on of Nico as he walks toward the camera, there is somebody giving somebody else a kicking as they lie on the ground in a basketball court. Nice.
  • YourMessageHere #52 5 years ago

Oi Rockstar, Announce a PC version at once. I wasn't overly pissed off by the lack of LCS and VCS on PC, given that I gave up on LCS for PSP due to it being GTA3, but with worse missions on a smaller screen. But really, what's stopping you from having a PC release? Even if you announce it for way after the console releases, I'm not too bothered. Don't think you're obliged to go printing hardback books for us PC people either, like SA. Just tell me you'll release the game for PC at some point, ta.
  • Pepeman #53 5 years ago

Let's just wait and see how it turns up, ok?
  • DanWhitehead #54 5 years ago

As someone who didn't find a GTA as good as it was hyped up to be (GTA:SA) and for the first time didn't complete a GTA (GTA:LCS) and didn't buy a GTA for the first time (GTA:VCS), I'm trying my best to look for something, anything that's new to the series in what little gameplay footage there is, and I'm not guaranteed to get this in October btw.

The purpose of the teaser is to build hype, people will be judging this teaser from both ends of the spectrum.
  • space_ace #56 5 years ago

what's with the framerate, r*? O_O unforgivable for a trailer
  • earobus #57 5 years ago

@pepeman, you are fuckin right just read through most of these and cant understand why people are so far up there own arses, they should do this and should do that, maybe they should go work for rockstar, hell they done so badly in the past they probly could do with the help! (making tea)
  • afghan_jones #58 5 years ago

I watched it on XBOX live rather than through EG and didnt see any framerate/tearing issues at all.

It seems likely that all the spiffy things in this trailer, kicking doors down, hanging off copters etc will be cutscene rather than new gameplay but we shall see.

There is a weight of expectation on this game. while GTA games have always bee nfar from perfect, their sense of style, humour and brash cocky charm has made them great. I too felt SA was too flabby and could have been tightened up a great deal. likewise, I enjoyed LCS but it was more of the same (although Liberty remains my favourite setting I think), VCS was actually pretty flawed by comparison to it's predecessors.

GTA copycats in the past were usually kinda shit. getaway, true crime, etc. Now we have saints row (flawed but improves certain mechanics) and crackdown (The only non-GTA 'open-world' to really work IMO.

GTAIV needs to really pull GTA back to the top of the heap. And I for one hope they manage it.
  • sanctusmortis #59 5 years ago

For the people not understanding the hate: not played Saints Row or Crackdown then? Two games that showed what sort of stuff a next gen GTA should be capable of. Until everyone else is sick of it and I can get it cheap preowned, it's a no from me, as Halo 3 and Bioshock will be keeping me busy. No great changes, no return to fun, no sale.

Last GTA I had was Vice City, and that was so linear and dull I have up. This isn't really changing my opinion of the 3D series.
  • Wayne #60 5 years ago

I guess I may get stuck into San Andreas, as I never finished it. I found it too big, too expansive. But I'm a bit anal about playing games in order and I won't let myself play GTA4 until I finish San Andreas.
  • spongebob #61 5 years ago

Saints Row and Crackdown, you say? First one being a stupid GTA-clone without any of the wit, intelligent and funny writing or sophistication of the Rockstar series, and the latter one being a game without any narrative at all. I think the problem is with you, not Rockstar. And I am sure there will be plenty of free-roaming mindless shooters for you in the future from other developers.
  • el_pollo_diablo #62 5 years ago

When does this game come out?
  • mysteryfaceuk #63 5 years ago

I think that GTA4 needs to shake up its format to stay fresh for next gen or it's just going to end up like what EA does every year with FIFA. Of course, GTA will continue to sell because of its name (even LCS and VCS sold in large numbers) but it may find its numbers eroding if doesn't do more than a simple evolutionary change.

GTA3 was revolutionary when it came out, not because of its graphical overhaul but because of its total freedom. I doubt however if GTA4 will make quite the same impression.

Probably a lot of fun. And the city dpes look good.

But compared to Bioshock, Burnout 5 and Blue Dragon, this is nowhere on my to get list. Too many games, so little money.

  • Machiavellian #65 5 years ago

There is way to much bitching for a teaser trailer. You already have people stating they will pass on the game or wait for the bargain bin without even seeing a review or even seeing probably 1/10 the gameplay. I believe the Teaser was ment to give you a feel for the story not the gameplay that I am sure R has worked hard to refine.

  • mysteryfaceuk #66 5 years ago

    @Machiavellian

I agree. It's just a trailer. It would be like deciding whether to see a movie based purely upon its trailer. Everyone should just wait for it to come out and make their own decision then.

Even if it sucks it'll sell.
  • captainrentboy #70 5 years ago

Actually, I think a lot of the general public do make their decision as to whether or not they're going to see a movie just from how enticing it's trailers are, well that and word of mouth.
Which is why of course movie trailers are renowned for ''sticking all the best bits in''.
I'd imagine only a small percentage of folk read a lengthy review in Empire or Total Film first, no, that's reserved for massive movie geeks like me.
But I'm not sure if that actually applies to the games industry.....
So come to think of it, this comment's pretty useless.

If GTAIV provides half the fun I had in previous games then I'm in.
I like the music, the sandbox approach and the dark humour of it all.
The animation of the cops homing in looked good and can imagine
some very funny shi# blowing stuff up just to see them bodies fly,
    sick...someone put me away!
I hope that they include some multiplayer fun like in Crackdown too.
  • ruckus #73 5 years ago

I'll buy it for the sandbox/free roam stuff anyways (just like all the others).
  • ph101 #74 5 years ago

This game looks fun. I might buy an xbox 360 around release time for it (and some other nice looking 360 games). To complement my wii and PC that is.
  • rasomaso #75 5 years ago

I'm definitely gonna buy it. It really impressed me, but I don't get how can people be dissapointed. It's obvious that game of this type can't look like other next gen games. It's not about the textures, it's about how the city looks/feels like - for me it looks naturaly animated and it creates a vision of NY like we see it in the movies. And I think the animation is very good too. Rockstar said they won't be revealing so many features before release as with the SA, because they want the player to discover it by playing the game. It's the game of the century and I can see that many of you can't recognize it now, but I'm sure you will.

Damn if I won't see more than 15 players online, I'm gonna be really pissed on R*!

God damn, if you whiney fucks could hear yourself you'd punch yourself in the groin for sounding like Elton John taking a stiff one from Mr T.

Rockstar has made some damn fine games and now that you've been spoilt by some great quality titles you expect EVERY single one to be a huge leap forward. Personally I'm happy to keep buying ANY game that has a great story with loads of memorable characters.
