Gran Turismo series hits 55m sales
PS2 titles lead the way.
GameSpot has figures from Sony's latest financial reporting showing that the Gran Turismo series has cumulatively sold over 55 million copies.
It was pushed over the milestone by the recent Gran Turismo for PSP, which has sold 1.8 million copies since its release in October last year. That's a healthy performance, but small fry by the racing series' standards.
Even cut-down PS3 release Gran Turismo 5 Prologue has sold an amazing 4.65 million copies, with the main instalments in the series reliably pulling in some 10 million sales apiece since its inception in 1997. It sold best on the PS2, however, with Gran Turismo 4 the second-biggest seller at 10.98 million and 2001's Gran Turismo 3 A-spec far out in the lead with 14.89 million copies sold.
55 million sales is not quite enough to propel GT into the top ten game franchises of all time - yet. Chances are that the much-delayed Gran Turismo 5 for PS3 will achieve that, displacing Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series in the process. That's if it ever comes out.

GT5 so far is leaving me cold from what I've seen on a mate's PS3. Looks like a HD version of 4 at the mo.

I wonder how SCE feel about the delays that have hit GT5. Would they, in hindsight, wish that GT5 in full had been released back in 2007/08 - in order to give the PS3 a huge boost over the Xbox 360...
I think that if the game had come out back then, the PS3 would be probably be about 10 million units ahead of the 360 right now.
But, of course, would the game have been any good had it come out years ago?

In response though, I don't think SCE are that bothered. Coming into this gen a year late they've always said that the console business is a marathon and not a sprint. GT5 has great form at selling in the millions and shifting a load of hardware too, that's not to say that they're happy with the delays but they'll certainly be looking at the bigger picture rather than getting caught up on the delays in development.
PS - Care to make that trollbait a little more obvious there Oli?

It is a classic series and pretty impressive figures.

Without trying to be too patronising towards him, cian is a changed man and now makes some great comments. He's even pretty funny.

However I appreciate people who make thoughtful, well-written comments and I never thought my mental segmenter would put cianchristopher in that category.
