E3: Gran Turismo PSP Hands On

PSP Hands On by Eurogamer staff

4 June, 2009

Page 2 of 2. <- Page 1

Eurogamer: In return, does it have any kind of knock-on effect on how GT5 is coming along?

Kazunori Yamauchi: I don't think there was a direct effect, but I do believe that the development team really gained experience in streamlining displaying graphics on a very small space and also how to manage memory when the amount of memory available is very small. That sort of experience is something that was gained by the team.

And you know, this is the first time we've developed a portable game, and I think there is an effect on how we see games, and how we understand videogames.

Eurogamer: Could you expand on that a little bit?

Kazunori Yamauchi: When you think of a game you have certain expectations for it, but we were going from a full HD screen to a screen this size [gestures PSP shape], and the dynamic range between the two experiences is very different and changes your thinking.

Eurogamer: Have you been thinking about other racing games? It seems that Forza is in the same space, but other racing games have gone into really quite strange areas with power-ups and weird effects and elaborate open worlds. How much do you take notice of what's happening in the wider genre?

Kazunori Yamauchi: I've created games before with power-ups and things like that - Motor Toon Grand Prix for example - but Gran Turismo is always just Gran Turismo. That's just the same as U2 is always going to sing U2 music - they're not going to sing hip-hop all of a sudden.

'E3: Gran Turismo PSP' Screenshot 3

Eurogamer: Can I ask you a little bit about what motivates you as a game creator - is it cars or is it game design?

Kazunori Yamauchi: That depends on the time period actually. Right now creating the game system has my interest, because we're creating things like this, and when I'm creating GT5 I'm always thinking about how the system's going to be arranged. But at a certain point in time my heart goes out to cars, so it kind of swings back and forth!

Eurogamer: In terms of GT PSP connectivity, is there downloadable content planned, and is there any plan for connecting with GT5 at all?

Kazunori Yamauchi: First off, for the PSP version we're not thinking of any downloadable content. And as for the link with GT5, we're hoping maybe to make it so you can share the garage with the PSP version so that cars you unlock on PSP will be available immediately on GT5.

Eurogamer: I appreciate you're not here today to talk about GT5, but is there anything you can say about how development's going?

Kazunori Yamauchi: I want to release it as fast as I can, but GT5 for us, when you talk about its status, it's at a point we can release it any time we want, but we can always keep working on it. It's very important for us to make sure everything is done perfectly and everything is done in detail.

Eurogamer: One of the things that stood out in Microsoft's press conference was the Forza team saying it was the definitive simulation racer. How do you feel about that?

Kazunori Yamauchi: I don't exactly know what their announcement was about, but we've evolved over 10 years through our history, towards GT5, and I don't know if it's something that can be compared.

'E3: Gran Turismo PSP' Screenshot 4

Eurogamer: As a car fan, any thoughts on the troubles the car industry is going through at the moment?

Kazunori Yamauchi: My first and foremost concern right now is not about the game industry but it's more about the automobile industry. I'm very worried about it and I don't think it's a problem that's just limited to the United States. One of the reasons why we made this game now and are releasing it now is that we want teenagers to get into cars. That's something I had in mind when I created the game. Cars are fun and just wonderful to drive, and it's something we have to relay to younger generations and all over the world.

Eurogamer: And, with how exhaustive GT is and how detailed and specific it is about cars, is there almost a sense that as the economy steps away from building these elaborate, really exciting bits of technological brilliance, you're almost becoming a curator for the really great cars?

Kazunori Yamauchi: 20 years, 30 years away, I think you're right - Gran Turismo will have that kind of effect where people look back and say, oh, cars back then used to be like this. But videogames doesn't have a very long history yet - they're just getting started. But cars have a hundred years of history, and when we read books about cars, we think these cars were created a hundred years ago, and we have something to gain from that. And that's also because the history of books is long as well. But I think in the future maybe videogames will have that kind of effect on people as well.

Gran Turismo PSP is due out on 1st October. Hands-on by Oli Welsh, interview by Christian Donlan.

"One thing that we were careful about when we designed the PSP version is that Gran Turismo provides a really wide field of options and things that you can do in the world and on the PSP version we have such a small screen, if we provide that kind of options it will confuse the user"

Thanks for the patronising words dear friend.

Ah, right, no it doesn't. That's very misleading of Polyphony Digital... even the PS3 version of GT5 Prologue doesn't look as good as those HD shots in-game!!! LOL

@ Darren

I was thinking the same - but looks very PSPesque with the odd fuzziness that PSP games usually have. I'd say they're for real - remember when GT4 came out on PS2 I was baffled that it looked a lot 'smoother' compared to GT3 and especially anything else out there at the time on the console.

I just hope that they can stick to the release date this time....

EDIT: should've checked the screenshot comments first... *sigh*

Sorry if this has been already covered but is this also coming as a UMD release, or is it download only? If its download only I'm guessing the PSP Go maybe has a little more power to it that they are tapping into...

The article refers to the download only UMD free PSP Go. but the game will be released on both formats

EDIT: wouldn't make any commercial sense if they'd release it for the PSP Go only, think about the existing 50m PSP units out there

First day UMD sales: 20.
First day piracies: 40,000,000.

From a commercial perspective, it would make entire sense to release for the Go! only.

Looks crap - more so considering the length of time it has taken to develop.

Motorstorm on PSP looks far better - and probably alot more fun.

It doesn't matter if its UMD or not.
You just download it on a new PSP GO or an old phat or slim model.
Theres no such thing as a PSP Go only game.

So I take it you think someone at Eurogamer has taken the time to re-render some images for Polyphony/Sony as they felt sorry for them and the official images?

The question is rather why EG used them instead of actual screenshots.

Mind you, I bought the PSP almost at launch and loved it dearly till I sold it, because I wasn't commuting anymore. So, I'm neither an Xbox fanboy nor an atomic playboy (actually...).

I've watched the video's on Youtube for it in play and I think it looks pretty darn awesome.
Consider its basically a PS2 game and if you played a PS2 racing game now you'd slag off the graphics something rotten in comparison to current gen offerings.

Its a hand-held for gods sakes!

So the PSP version of Gran Turismo actually looks like a half-way house between the visuals of Gran Turismo 2 (PSone) and 3 (PS2) then? Looks OK for a handheld, granted, but nowhere near as impressive as the shots littering the article. Very misleading if you ask me.

I've just watched the YouTube E3 footage and the game looks pretty decent really. Although I don't own a PSP, I'd imagine it would look better still on the smaller screen. Looks very similar to the PS2 games actually (which I have played) and seems to run at a good framerate. I'm quite impressed really... but definitely not with those faked PR shots in the article. Get rid of 'em will ya!

It does look better moving, than the static images show - still juddering in places (hopefully fixed) and not seen any gameplay footage with the massive blackbar removed from the bottom yet - but fingers crossed.

Good interview, but no questions about future PSP work and non racing games from Polyphony Digital, such as Omega Boost even if it was just a case of putting the PS1 game up on the PSN store - oh and I recall Kazunori Yamauchi spoke of wanting to do something like an rpg some years back.

Bear in mind it's running on a 3.8" screen and not a 17" monitor then sure I think it looks close enough for me.

No they're not - Colin MaCrae 2005 was on the PSP years ago (Clues in the name) and looked almost as good AND all without a big black bar blocking out at least 10% of the entire screen - and it was launched when the PSP was only allowed to run at 222mhz.

Now GT5 on PS3 looks amazing, GT PSP looks as expected at best...

In a nutshell, when people go on about how crappy this or that PSP game looks, please remember it's a handheld - compare it to some DS games for a sobering experience.

Perhaps it should be taken as a compliment that it seems to get benchmarked to fully fledged home consoles (at least sometimes that's the impression I get) - even though I would rather call it a curse... e.g. lazy console ports etc.

It's annoying to see that devs still feel the need to downsize a game because they think playsessions on a portable device need to be short. I disagree. My PSP gets it's playtime from sessions with friends, playing multiplayer on the couch at home, not in trains or during travel. I think (though this is an assumption) that we are not like the japanese, playing MH during commutes. I've NEVER seen anyone play on their PSP while on the train, bus, or whatever. Let alone seen people multiplay...
And besides, the PSP has a sleep function. When in a game on the train and your stop comes up, press pause and put the machine to sleep. So devs, please treat the PSP as a console if the game calls for it, no downsizing if not needed.
