"One thing that we were careful about when we designed the PSP version is that Gran Turismo provides a really wide field of options and things that you can do in the world and on the PSP version we have such a small screen, if we provide that kind of options it will confuse the user"

Thanks for the patronising words dear friend.

Ah, right, no it doesn't. That's very misleading of Polyphony Digital... even the PS3 version of GT5 Prologue doesn't look as good as those HD shots in-game!!! LOL

@ Darren

I was thinking the same - but looks very PSPesque with the odd fuzziness that PSP games usually have. I'd say they're for real - remember when GT4 came out on PS2 I was baffled that it looked a lot 'smoother' compared to GT3 and especially anything else out there at the time on the console.

I just hope that they can stick to the release date this time....

EDIT: should've checked the screenshot comments first... *sigh*

Sorry if this has been already covered but is this also coming as a UMD release, or is it download only? If its download only I'm guessing the PSP Go maybe has a little more power to it that they are tapping into...

The article refers to the download only UMD free PSP Go. but the game will be released on both formats

EDIT: wouldn't make any commercial sense if they'd release it for the PSP Go only, think about the existing 50m PSP units out there

First day UMD sales: 20.
First day piracies: 40,000,000.

From a commercial perspective, it would make entire sense to release for the Go! only.

Links to ACTUAL PSP SHOTS - will Sony ever give up the f**king smoke an mirrors mentality????

Looks crap - more so considering the length of time it has taken to develop.

Motorstorm on PSP looks far better - and probably alot more fun.

I wouldn't exactly call that looking crap, also most PSP screenshots look worse than when playing the actual game

It doesn't matter if its UMD or not.
You just download it on a new PSP GO or an old phat or slim model.
Theres no such thing as a PSP Go only game.

Thanks for the vid. The game doesn't look nearly as good as those stills EG's put on. And Burnout Legends looks considerably better.

If Sony were doing the smoke and mirrors why put actual shots on the official website??

@NotSoSlim: If Sony's that confident about their official screenshots, why don't they provide them to reviewers such as EG and let them publish those promo stills (or whatever they are)?

So I take it you think someone at Eurogamer has taken the time to re-render some images for Polyphony/Sony as they felt sorry for them and the official images?

EDIT: and what Eldritch said.

The question is rather why EG used them instead of actual screenshots.

Mind you, I bought the PSP almost at launch and loved it dearly till I sold it, because I wasn't commuting anymore. So, I'm neither an Xbox fanboy nor an atomic playboy (actually...).

I've watched the video's on Youtube for it in play and I think it looks pretty darn awesome.
Consider its basically a PS2 game and if you played a PS2 racing game now you'd slag off the graphics something rotten in comparison to current gen offerings.

Its a hand-held for gods sakes!

Plus what gives with the huge blackbar at the bottom of the screen? Seems like a dirty cheat not seen since the 8/16bit home computer conversions. I do hope it can be removed.

So the PSP version of Gran Turismo actually looks like a half-way house between the visuals of Gran Turismo 2 (PSone) and 3 (PS2) then? Looks OK for a handheld, granted, but nowhere near as impressive as the shots littering the article. Very misleading if you ask me.

I've just watched the YouTube E3 footage and the game looks pretty decent really. Although I don't own a PSP, I'd imagine it would look better still on the smaller screen. Looks very similar to the PS2 games actually (which I have played) and seems to run at a good framerate. I'm quite impressed really... but definitely not with those faked PR shots in the article. Get rid of 'em will ya!

I am quite sure LOTS of people will be downloading this on to a PSP - more of a question of how many will have paid for it?

It does look better moving, than the static images show - still juddering in places (hopefully fixed) and not seen any gameplay footage with the massive blackbar removed from the bottom yet - but fingers crossed.

Good interview, but no questions about future PSP work and non racing games from Polyphony Digital, such as Omega Boost even if it was just a case of putting the PS1 game up on the PSN store - oh and I recall Kazunori Yamauchi spoke of wanting to do something like an rpg some years back.

Bear in mind it's running on a 3.8" screen and not a 17" monitor then sure I think it looks close enough for me.

Also as stated, in motion it looks much better than the static shots.

No they're not - Colin MaCrae 2005 was on the PSP years ago (Clues in the name) and looked almost as good AND all without a big black bar blocking out at least 10% of the entire screen - and it was launched when the PSP was only allowed to run at 222mhz.

Now GT5 on PS3 looks amazing, GT PSP looks as expected at best...

Looks great on hands on video.
Screenshots always look awful compared to what you see on the screen. Don't know why (best example Monster Hunter).

In a nutshell, when people go on about how crappy this or that PSP game looks, please remember it's a handheld - compare it to some DS games for a sobering experience.

Perhaps it should be taken as a compliment that it seems to get benchmarked to fully fledged home consoles (at least sometimes that's the impression I get) - even though I would rather call it a curse... e.g. lazy console ports etc.

It's annoying to see that devs still feel the need to downsize a game because they think playsessions on a portable device need to be short. I disagree. My PSP gets it's playtime from sessions with friends, playing multiplayer on the couch at home, not in trains or during travel. I think (though this is an assumption) that we are not like the japanese, playing MH during commutes. I've NEVER seen anyone play on their PSP while on the train, bus, or whatever. Let alone seen people multiplay...
And besides, the PSP has a sleep function. When in a game on the train and your stop comes up, press pause and put the machine to sleep. So devs, please treat the PSP as a console if the game calls for it, no downsizing if not needed.
