Gran Turismo 5 to have 3D, Move support?

Report reckons that's the reason for delay.

Rumours are swirling that Gran Turismo 5 will feature 3D visuals and support for the PlayStation Move controller.

According to MCV, the news comes from "a source close to Sony". Apparently the delays to the game's release can be attributed to the extra time required to implement the new technology.

Sony has declined to comment on the report.

Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi recently said Gran Turismo 5 is "about 90 per cent" finished, as one might expect considering it's been in development for approximately 587 years. There's currently no word on a release date, but here's hoping all will be revealed at E3. Again.

Delaying a the game further to add features I would say MOST of the core audience don't care about? Sort it out Polyphony/Sony! Just release it already.
  • Vice.Destroyer #2 2 years ago

I think that we can all assume that it will be a good game. The studio has pedigree. The biggest danger that the game faces will be the weight of expectation. And also being the first major game, to fully integrate TWO new technologies. If Move ends up being poor, GT5 will get tarred with the same brush. And if the 3D implementation is too cumbersome for gaming, well, that will be another negative association with this game.

Someone at Sony is gambling very heavily on the popularity of GT5 enabling the uptake of these new technologies. Squeeky bum time, as Sir Ferguson says.
  • LowEnergyCycle #3 2 years ago

Possibly the stupidest reason for a delay ever, what with nobody actually caring about 3D yet. And I can hardly see Move support setting the world on fire in a racing sim.

I wonder where/when it will end. Now - supposedly - adding 3D and Move support. Perhaps soon they will make it compatible on PS2 by toning down the engine, adding support for 4320p and by using the PS webcam you can import your own car by making stills of it.

It is getting a bit silly isn't it.
  • Caimbeul #5 2 years ago

I agree 3D is a pointless addtion. It actually has a minimal effect in Racing games and watching motorsport (1st hand experience) and whats with Move support? Seriously!
  • iamtheoneneo #6 2 years ago

Yawn another month, another crappy update for a game well past its sell by date.

People should not assume this will be good, delays of this long more times then not mean there's big problems
  • wizlon #7 2 years ago

I fail to see how they could be adding Move support, you can't really hold the move controller like the wii remote because of it's layout.
  • Ryze #8 2 years ago

    yawn.

Pololyphlolny to shoehorn in Move support.

Surely releasing a patch to enable 3D support would have been a better idea.
This is gonna be one of those games in development so long that by the time it comes out all the good ideas implemented in it are in use in other games already.
  • linksdad #10 2 years ago

PS4 support would be a great addition. I hope they delay some more and really make it worthwhile.

Seriously though, if this game is going to run at 60fps, then great - I understand it isnt quite managing it yet. But half that for 3d implementation and you are going to get something quite cumbersome, add in 'virtual' steering wheel and they are going to have to provide a fleet of milk floats to race.
  • dominalien #11 2 years ago

Sony has a history of pushing new technology with products which are expected to sell well. PS2 with DVD was a success, PS3 with blu-ray arguably as well. This time they reach new levels of scale, but GT5 is "only a game" so their gambit will hardly influence something as significant as an entire console generation. OTOH if GT5 is a huge success (by no means guaranteed, what with all the big gaming brands getting more and more diluted recently) it can give both 3D and Move the push they need to succeed.
  • des #12 2 years ago

Yay another game with 3D gimmick.
  • superted1974 #13 2 years ago

I suppose something can be 90% finished and then if the game gets bigger you can do more work and it still only be 90% finished.

    Can it?

I loved the first two Gran Turismo's but never got on with 3 or 4, but I want this game badly. HURRY UP.

The more AAA titles Sony can shoe-horn 3D into the more Sony 3D tvs they figure they will be able to flog. Ditto the original rationale for using BR as the optical media in the PS3.

ALl this talk of 3D in gaming reminds be of that 2008 stat from Cliffy B that only 50% of users played Gears of War on an HDTV. I can realistically imagine the take-up of 3dtv will be much slower than HDTV (was a big time gap between CRTs and HD panels, much shorter one between HD and 3D...will consumers upgrade again so soon?).

Realisitically, in even say three years time, I'd guess less than 5% of the people playing GT5 will be doing so in 3D. WHich makes me question delaying key titles like this. Other than the "sell you a sony bravia" context.

Think the Move support is pretty cool. They've been working on it for a while. The move camera tracks your head movement, so turning your head left for example, will turn the in car camera left.
  • beastmaster #17 2 years ago

Is this what they mean by 'aggressive marketing'?
  • linksdad #18 2 years ago

"Think the Move support is pretty cool. They've been working on it for a while. The move camera tracks your head movement, so turning your head left for example, will turn the in car camera left."

The thing with turning your head to get a different viewpoint means that you are no longer looking at the display. This only intuitively works with goggles.
  • ant72 #19 2 years ago

Now all it needs is 4D support, so it can go back in time and ship when it was supposed to.
  • DavoTheDiv_2010 #20 2 years ago

"The thing with turning your head to get a different viewpoint means that you are no longer looking at the display. This only intuitively works with goggles."

No. I can definitely move my head without moving my eyes too. May be i'm just a freak??
  • MKorkia #21 2 years ago

Next thing we'll hear is that they delay even more to have a pedometer support... :-/ For each step you'll earn green eco fuel that can be used in environmentally conscious races.
  • Nuronv #22 2 years ago

  • Jay-ITFC #23 2 years ago

Anyone else beyond caring about this game? The delays are annoying in the extreme.
  • DavoTheDiv_2010 #24 2 years ago

    "Déjà vu"

    I've heard that one before
  • peterfll #25 2 years ago

Just dump this version and put it back in development for Playstation 4 launch so it can incorperate laser graphics, holodecks and audio-visual implant support.
  • Physically_Insane #26 2 years ago

3D and move support. Jesus, that almost puts me off buying it.
  • nasanu #27 2 years ago

Your optimistic. Sure you didnt mean 'less than .5%'?'

    Gimmicky shit is gimmicky

I firmly believe these changes are made to justify the long dev time, not the other way around.
  • M4RV #29 2 years ago

Quite honestly, do most people even care about GT5 by now...?! I assume most of them have already moved on; I certainly did.

    GT5 will sell boatloads.

Why did Alan Wake not get half the grief GT5 gets but took just as long? At least GT5 will be an exceptional game...

It makes sense from a business perspective for Sony to release GT 5 with 3D. It's probably their biggest title and they happen to sell tvs. It's a no brainer.
  • UncleLou #33 2 years ago

Not sure how you can "move on" from an unreleased game. If it's good when it's released, I'll buy it. Simple as that.
  • Zomoniac #34 2 years ago

Why did Alan Wake not get half the grief GT5 gets but took just as long? At least GT5 will be an exceptional game...

Probably because Alan Wake wasn't a sequel to a number of 10m+ selling games?

"Why did Alan Wake not get half the grief GT5 gets but took just as long? At least GT5 will be an exceptional game... "

Exceptional? Got a crystal ball hey. Seems like a decent racer but I fail to see what it does better than most racers nowadays.

Polyphone have a team of 200+ working on GT5, Remedy had a team of 40 - 60. Also, Alan Wake was a brand new IP and the engine needed building from the ground up. GT5: Prologue came out two years ago so Polyphony already have their engine and most of the foundations laid.

Couldn't they always patch in this support once the game's been released instead of continuing to delay it? Or even better put it in the next version when support will be greater for these things?
  • KreyAtiv #39 2 years ago

    Excuses, excuses.
  • yonno #40 2 years ago

just release it already, patch it later if needs be
  • Retro_ #41 2 years ago

If nothing else, GT5 will be polished to the nth degree, I expect nothing less.
  • Goodfella #42 2 years ago

The thing with turning your head to get a different viewpoint means that you are no longer looking at the display.

As someone else said, er yes you can, about 45 degrees I would say. Besides, they're using some sort of programming where it 'accelerates' the movement of your view, move your head just a bit to the left and the car view will move further than your actual head movement.
  • linksdad #43 2 years ago

"As someone else said, er yes you can, about 45 degrees I would say"

So you turn your head the way you want to look, but you actually move your eyes in the opposite direction? This doesnt sound particularly intuitive, in fact quite the opposite. I havent tried yet so I am not knocking it.

If the camera exaggerates head movement, unintended movements are going to have the viewpoint all over the place, potentially being very disorientating and/or nausea inducing.
  • mkreku #44 2 years ago

Has it been 587 years already? Time sure does fly.
  • Ranger101 #45 2 years ago

Haven't they already spent like £60million on it already? It's called Feature Creep guys, developers should learn to say 'non!' (or ee-yeh in japanese).
  • Miths #46 2 years ago

Unless they are only talking about head tracking (similar to TrackIR on PC), I really can't see the point of Move support in a racing game? Obviously wheel and pedals are the best way to play racing games (the exception being full on arcade racers that have bad or no wheel support anyway - any news on whether Blur supports it by the way?), with gamepad trailing far behind, and then motion controls... well, I'm not even sure how that's supposed to work exactly? Pretending you're holding a steering wheel made out of thin air? Yeah, that's sure to feel great.
  • TeaFiend #47 2 years ago

I would love to know how high the dev costs for this game are.
  • Murton #48 2 years ago

"considering it's been in development for approximately 587 years. There's currently no word on a release date, but here's hoping all will be revealed at E3. Again."

and Ellie stirs it up again. Alan Wake was in development for at least a year prior to the first GT5 reveal and was featured at every E3 up until it was finally released. Yet it was persistently hailed as the next big thing and worth every day in waiting by EG while GT5, certainly a larger and more ambitious game is set upon by those same writers at every opportunity.

I wouldn't mind if the comments were even slightly amusing, but they're not, they're rather dull and predictable.
  • TeaFiend #49 2 years ago

At least Alan Wake got released.
  • iamtheoneneo #50 2 years ago

You people saying "delaying it for this is idiotic" have no idea how to sell a product...

yes, it sucks that this game is only releasing now, as it should've already been out at least a year by now... But since it wasn't released, delaying it and including 3D and Move makes it more interesting to some people AND leverages better sales for Move AND 3D TVs. An update for the game would not have had the same effect.

GT5? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha hah haha hha hhhmwah h hahah aha hahah ha ha!

links'dad: moving your head while focussing on the same item is extremely intuitive. Look at yourself in a mirror and move your head and you will see that your eyes just move themselves to keep you in focus.
